A-Affordable Remodeling Reviews (%countItem)

Awarded the contract for my $60,000 addition to my home. Paid $20k 2/29/19. They did not have St of AL Res. Home Builders Lic.
A-Affordable Remodeling LLC was chosen from 4 bidding companies. They showed proof of a business license, insurance and had no significant negative reviews in July 2019. After signing the contract and paying $20,000 via check # *** to get started on 8/29/2019, *** and his team of an architect and engineer came up to get measurements of the existing house to begin the drawings that would be needed to apply for the permit for the project with the City of ***. It took forever for the drawings to be completed. Not because I was changing things but just constant delays. The drawings were finally finished 10/11/2019. After finally receiving and approving the drawings, the next step was to get the permits pulled so we could finally start the project. I was told over and over that the permits should be pulled tomorrow or later today virtually every few days as I continued to wait until I received a call from the City of *** demanding first asking if I was doing an addition then they firmly requested I send them a copy of the contract. This is when I knew things were not right. I sent them a copy of the contract which stated "A-AFFORDABLE REMODELING, LLC company shall obtain all necessary building permits if needed." After they reviewed the contract and a new permit application filed with them for a permit to do perform the work on the addition, the City of *** Building and Engineering Dept contacted me to inform me that A-Affordable Remodeling LLC will not be granted a permit nor be allowed to work on my project because they did not have a State of Alabama Residential Home Builders License which is required to offer / accept contracts for residential remodels or additions with contracts over $10,000. The City of *** had already confirmed this by the time they called me. Apparently, A-Affordable Remodeling LLC asked another builder that had an active State of Alabama Residential Home Builders license to pull the permit even though I had no contract with that builder. The result was the permit was denied and that builder is now being investigated by the State of Alabama Home Builder Licensure Board along with A-Affordable Remodeling LLC. The denied permit was filed 11/20/19 by the other builder. I was notified by the city that it was denied one week later.

As mentioned earlier, the promise of a permit coming was a near constant thing during the time after the drawings were finished. On the morning of 11/19/19, I was again notified by A-Affordable Remodeling LLC that the permit just needed to be picked up and brought over. The first part of the project was to debrick the back of the home so expose the existing slab. A group of workers from A-Affordable Remodeling LLC came out about 10 am and spent about 4-5 hours debricking then came back 11/20/19 to finish removing the remaining brick on my house. Remember I was told the permit was just needing to be picked up. As you can see in the paragraph above this I found out from the City that the permit was denied and in fact, A-Affordable Remodeling LLC will not be allowed to work on my property / addition at all.

It should also be noted that I received an invoice from Brad Patterson directly on 11/14/2019 for the drawings done on the project. The invoice was for $2,000. I replied back to Brad explaining that A-Affordable Remodeling LLC should have paid for that because they chose him and I paid for a turnkey project. I reported it to A-Affordable Remodeling LLC as well asking them to pay Brad.

After hearing from the City of *** that there was no way A-Affordable Remodeling LLC could complete the contract due to the inability to pull a permit or work as a sub contractor I spent weeks asking for $17,400 be refunded to me with proof that Brad Patterson had been paid the $2,000 for the drawings. That paid them $300 a day for the 2 days of non-permitted demolition ($600 total) only to get no reply to the request.

Desired Outcome

I have not given A-Affordable Remodeling LLC negative reviews anywhere publicly other than here and now. My request is no different than the one I have asked for since it was found out that A-Affordable Remodeling LLC could not fulfill the contracted obligations. Refund of $17,400 via check to ***. Proof of payment to Brad Patterson Architect PC of $2,000 (which was contracted between Brad and A-Affordable Remodeling LLC. That allows for A-Affordable Remodeling LLC to keep $600 for their two half days of debricking work. In return, I will waive my right to file criminal and / or civil law suites against A-Affordable Remodeling, LLC as this reasonable resolution has been achieved.

Roger, Randy and their crew did a wonderful job on our condo. The scope of work was to remove and replace laminate in the kitchen, rear entry hall, master bath and upstairs bath with a flooring of my choice. Remove a 1 piece tub unit and replace it with a shower unit we had previously purchased. Stretch carpet in the upstairs bedrooms and hall. Apply knock down texture in the upstairs bathroom and paint both bathrooms.
When we discussed the scope of work, my thoughts on flooring was waterproof vinyl planks. Turned out to be ceramic tile. There was no up charge. We even added back splash to the contract for a very reasonable fee.
We're giving a 4 star review instead of 5 because the project took longer than previously stated, with an adjustment for the extra work, due to employee issues, but it was completed within a week. Roger did everything in his power to make sure we were happy and even stepped in and did the work himself when an employee didn't show up.
We have been in the contracting business, therefore, we understand the challenges. Particularly, when remodeling there are always surprises.
A-Affordable Remodeling LLC did a good job for a reasonable price in a timely manner.

Took money and never started.
Job was to begin 8/12/19 and I wrote a check for $35,000. It's now January and nothing has happened. I have repeatedly tried contacting them and they rarely respond but when they do, they just give excuses. I have now requested to cancel the contract and I cannot get a response from them.

Desired Outcome

Full refund due to breach of contract.

A-Affordable Remodeling Response • Jan 21, 2020

The original salesman, which is no longer with A-Affordable Remodeling, LLC, regretfully did not disclose our backlog of 4 months. Mr. was upset however very patient and understanding of existing scheduled projects as well as engineering delays and bad weather delays, clear up to being agreeable with commencing the first week of the new year. It was at that point the project coordinator assigned to start Mr. project was hospitalized in ICU for 3 weeks and Mr. was diagnosed with cataracts thus requiring surgery as well.

Mr. come to an impasse with his patience, justifiably so. A-Affordable Remodeling, LLC cannot begin to convey their humility and frustration and are processing a full contractual refund, accompanied with a full release of obligation by both parties.

A_Affordable stood up and paid my refund in full. Thank You

Rushed into contract - Asked for cash
No pictures of workmanship - No show on due date on demo date - Requested 20% more for
items in contract.
I was rushed into signing contract and asked to make check out to cash.
I was never given samples or pictures of their kitchen remodel workmanship.
They didn't show up on due date to start the demo. Had conflicting stories as to when they ordered the dumpster, which really wasn't even needed for the job.
And they tried to charge me 20% more for quartz countertops which was plainly written in contract.

Desired Outcome

Request $2,250 of down payment monies paid on August 7th 2019.

A-Affordable Remodeling Response • Sep 20, 2019

first contacted our office on July 31, 2019. An appointment was scheduled for August 1, 2019 to discuss her project, preferences and options and to provide her with a free estimate. The original estimate was sent via email on August 1, 2019. At some point during the next week, she requested the addition of a tankless water heater and alternate payment terms. We amended the estimate to include the water heater and set the payment terms to be in 4 installments. The updated estimate was sent via email on August 7, 2019. A second appointment was made for August 7, 2019 where the salesman provided and reviewed the updated estimate with Ms.. He removed (marked thru) the line item showing 20% allowance for misc. additions and overages at her request. Mrs. signed the contract that day and initialed each page (which detailed the cost and scope of work) and issued a *check made payable to A-Affordable Remodeling dated 8/7/19. A copy can be provided if needed. Customer reviews were provided via text message at her request.
When Ms. changed her mind about the project, she was refunded monies as per her contract (shown under "Estimate Terms and Conditions"). A-Affordable Remodeling, LLC had incurred expenses to date of cancellation which included ordering a dumpster (which is usually required during a remodel; debris removal and cleanup), traveling to get a quote on quartz counter tops, project management time and review of specifications and drawings, etc... Her refund check was issued on August 30, 2019.
*All A-Affordable Remodeling, LLC customers have the option to pay with cash, check, or credit card.

(The consumer indicated he/she DID NOT accept the response from the business.)
I disagree to the costs A-Affordable incurred for "expenses" and project management. When I showed up at their office around noon on Monday August 19th, (the day the project was to have started) Mr. said he didn't know where one of his worker was and that the dumpster had just been ordered that morning. However, *** (an A-Afforable representative who first contacted us about the job) told my husband and me on Friday August 16th that the dumpster had already been ordered that morning. On August 19th I also asked Mr. about the samples of their concrete countertop workmanship or a sample of quartz both of which I had requested from day one. It was only then, (the day of August 19th) that Mr. said he'd have to drive to Foley to get me a sample of quartz.
On the afternoon of August 19th Mr. and *** brought me a quartz sample by my house. Mr. looked at *** and asked, "I wonder what happened to Cody." He was supposedly their demo guy. Mr. then said, "I guess I'll have to do the work myself."
This kitchen project seemed to me to be a scam. They were on time to get the money but were unable or unwilling to do the actual work or to give me the information I had requested. I later discussed the situation with my husband and decided to cancel the job.
Mr. said that there would a 15% restocking fee. However, my job was mostly labor, I was just rearranging the layout. Obviously they hadn't purchased anything because I never received any samples until the evening of August 19th.
And as far as time spent reviewing specifications and drawings their contract was written on August 1st the same day *** came to my house to see what my reno would require and cost. Not a lot of time spent on that one.

I did however write the check to A-Affordable. I misspoke because I had written a check for cash to put into my other checking account.
A-Affordable seemed dishonest in their handling of my kitchen remodel. It seemed convenient to have the job cancelled so they could just walk away with the down payment money. This is a dishonest way to do business. $2,250 is not a fair price to pay for ordering and cancelling a dumpster, and driving to Foley for a sample. Please be careful if hiring this company.

After a week of communication with Mrs., going over options, wants, likes, needs and budget, she happily signed the proposal; knowingly entering into a contract with A-Affordable Remodeling, LLC.
We did in fact have Cody dispatched on Monday, Aug 19, to begin the demolition. For reasons not in our control, he was a no show. At that point Mr. was ready to rearrange his schedule to accommodate the *** project.
A-Affordable Remodeling, LLC strives to provide TLC to all our customers. Unforeseen circumstances arise from time to time. Remodeling is an intricate process involving multiple efforts and hours of research, coordination and preparation spent behind the scenes by many.
Mrs. made the choice to terminate her contractual agreement with A-Affordable Remodeling, LLC. We discussed the terms of cancellation and wanted to move forward with the project after addressing her concerns. Mrs. still chose to forfeit monies and cancel her contract. We did everything possible to accommodate her wishes.
