Cake Break Reviews (6)

Review: My fiancee and I put down a $250 deposit on a wedding cake in January 2013 for our wedding on June 28th 2014. In November of 2013 the store closed. We finally received a letter from the owner in January of 2014 saying that they were closed for the winter and would open in the spring. Today we found out that store is now available for lease. Thus, Cake Break will not be opening in the spring and will be unable to fulfill the agreement for making our wedding cake.Desired Settlement: We would like a refund of our deposit.

Review: In April of 2013 I drove to cake break and had an appointment with cake break where I met with [redacted], owners of the company. We were verbally told we needed to send a $100.00 deposit to hold our date which is 10/5/2014. The following months proved difficult to reach [redacted] with various questions/concerns regarding our wedding cake.

On December 31st, 2013 I saw the article posted in the Cape Gazette, a local newspaper detailing the alleged break down of Cake Break and how the owners mysteriously took everyone's money, closed their doors and left Delaware. As an adult I understand you can not believe ALL you read so I sent a social media message ( on Facebook) to [redacted], made several phone calls to Cake Break as well as emailed Debbie at the email address I have had and used the last 9 months for correspondence and got no answer. On January 1st around 5pm and again on January 11, 2014 I received a generalized email containing the exact information on both instances:

" Cake Break has closed it retail outlet in Rehoboth Beach for the winter We have in the past and will continue to in the future do everything in our power to make your wedding day the most wonderful and enjoyable day of your life and something you will always remember. We believe the reason you chose Cake Break was you believed our cakes and cupcakes would contribute to the beauty of your wedding. We do not take this commitment lightly and have no intention of not fulfilling our commitment. We not only take great pride in the weddings we have catered but also get an incredible degree of joy in helping to make wedding days something to remember. We look forward to serving you in any capacity you desire to make your wedding not only beautiful but also delicious.

I hope this eases your mind. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact us thru our email address [email protected] or by mail at Cake Break 7 S. First Street, Rehoboth Beach, DE 19971."

Since then, I have again tried to call their location and have sent 3 emails without a response explaining the frustrations of the situation as well as stating it does not ease anyone's mind because the email fails to mention Any details as to how they will go about how they will "fulfill the commitment". I have also looked through all of my documents and been in touch with other brides who planned on using Cake Break and several others including myself did not have a physical contract- just a verbal agreement , a word document as a form of estimate and various emails regarding questions/concerns.

This situation is beyond frustrating and very difficult to get a resolution, I live in Pennsylvania and wouldn't have known of the situation without seeing the Gazette article and our reception vendor countlessly asking Debbie and Phil to provide all brides with some kind of response to the situation that they have caused.

I have asked for my $100.00 deposit back and provided my mailing address. If needed, I can send in a copy of the deposit check- these people should not be allowed to get away with doing this to their employees, clients and members of their community! Please help me resolve this horrible situation for myself and the many other brides/various clients that have been impacted by this situation.Desired Settlement: I would like the $100.00 deposit back in the form of cash because Cake Break employees have gone "on record" stating they have received many bounced checks- which would turn into another complaint and more frustrations.

Review: My fianc and I selected this bakery for our wedding that is scheduled for May 10, 2014 in Dewey Beach, Delaware. We met with the owners and completed a cake tasting. An agreement was reached in terms of the number of cupcakes that we were ordering, we selected 3 flavors, delivery time and location, and the amount of the deposit. The deposit of $150.00 was paid, and then by happenstance we discovered that Cake Break went out of business. I understand that I placed a non-refundable deposit, but I thought that was in case I made a change or did not complete my order. I was not under the impression that a business could take my money and not fulfill its obligations. It has been difficult reaching the owners and they never contacted my fianc and I to notify us that they were closing. Now, we are in search of a new bakery and out of $150 with no service provided. The owners exhibited poor business practices and horrible customer service by closing haphazardly.Desired Settlement: I would love to have my deposit refunded as it was our intention to follow through with the agreement. The owners of Cake Break broke their agreement and failed to provide us with notification of their intent to close.

Review: My fiance and I placed a $160 deposit for cake/cupcakes with Cake Break. I recently received an e-mail stating that Cake Break is now out of business and they would be unable to fill our order. I have since tried (unsuccessfully) to contact the store/owner and have not had my e-mails replied to.Desired Settlement: We are seeking a full refund of our $160 deposit.

Review: I created a contract with Cake Break to do my wedding cake and cupcake for April 26, 2014. The contract came to a total cost of $665 with a deposit of $330. The deposit of $330 was mailed by check and cashed by Cake Break in August of 2013. Cake Break has been closed for business since December 1, 2013 and I still have not been notified by the owner [redacted]. I found out this information when I had to travel down to the bakery to try and get in touch with [redacted] has not returned my phone calls or mutiple emails. I would like my $330 deposit returned to me.Desired Settlement: Reimbursement of the total deposit amout of $330.

Review: Cake Break has made several errors. I booked a "contract" with them in Summer 2013 for my wedding on June 2nd, 2014. They collected my half down deposit of over $200 cash. I would say this was between $200-$220. I did not get a physical paper contract from them and if I had a receipt it is long gone. All of these are probably errors on my part for not keeping better record. However, I was not aware that Cake Break would close their doors without warning approximately six months prior to my wedding date. They sent out an email, which looks like a form letter that was sent to several customers, saying they will honor current contracts. I do not wish to continue my business with them. I want my money back and I am in the process of looking for another bakery who is able to make my wedding cake. I have tried on MULTIPLE occasions to reach them and make contact with them to get my money back. They are absolutely unreachable. This is unacceptable and not what a bride should have to deal with during her wedding planning process. I would hate to think that I will never see my $200-$220 dollars again. A wedding is expensive enough without businesses shutting down without warning and avoiding contact with customers and not refunding "contracts".Desired Settlement: I just want back what I paid to them in cash or close to what I paid. Since I do not remember the exact amount I would be happy if it was only $200. I do not wish to deal with this business any more after I get my money back. This is unacceptable.
