California Subject Examinations for Teachers

Review: I signed up for the Multiple Subject Subtest II and Multiple Subject Subtest III on their website using an existing account. My existing account was under my maiden name. I had previously taken Multiple Subject Subtest I under this account without any problems using my current drivers license. The day of the test they did not allow me to take the test because I was registered under my maiden name and my California license had my married name. My married name is simply hyphenated. I had other proof of identification such as both of my social security cards, credit cards with both names, etc. They refused to admit me to take the test. I contacted CSET to reschedule my test to a later date once my name was updated in their system. They sent me a standard letter rejecting my request. Essentially they stole my money by not letting me reschedule the test I had paid for. I had to pay for the test again so that I can take it before the deadline.

We have researched this examinee's request for a refund or credit of the test fees associated with a registration for the Multiple Subjects Subtest II (test code 102) for the May 25, 2013 administration of the California Subject Examinations for Teachers (CSET).

As explained to this examinee in previous correspondence, our records indicate that the examinee did not register in the name that was on the government-issued identification that she presented at her test appointment nor did she present official, original verification of the name change. As a result, she was denied admission to the test.

As stated on the CSET website at www.cset.nesinc.com, examinees are informed that when they register for the CSET, they agree to abide by the Rules of Test Participation. As stated in the CSET Rules of Test Participation, to be admitted to a test session, examinees must present current, government-issued identification, printed in English, in the name in which they registered, bearing their photograph and signature. Additionally, the website states that if the name on the examinee's identification differs from the name in which they registered, they must bring official, original verification of the change (e.g., original marriage certificate, original court order). The website also states that if examinees do not have proper identification at the time of their test appointment, they will be denied admission to the test session and will receive no refund or credit of any kind.

Our records indicate that this examinee subsequently submitted appropriate documentation reflecting a name change and that her account with the CSET program has been updated accordingly.
