We contracted with Carolina Deck, Fence, and Rail, but apparently the name has changed. However, the owner's name is the same. Owner seemed very knowledgable, brought samples of materials used and pictures of other jobs, was Revdex.com accredited, and offered a lifetime guarantee. And, he seemed like a nice guy. He gave us a quote, and requested a $2000 down payment, which was reasonable, and we paid on 6/5/2013. He did not start the project until mid-July, and, it took almost 3 weeks and a couple reminder calls to complete, not the 7-10 days he claimed. But, delays can be expected with any job, and there were some rainy days as well. Some of his workers were messy-trampled flowers, drink cups, fast food wrappers left around, etc., but again, these things happen.
However, more bothersome was his continual requests for more money upfront before supplies could be purchased or work done. He even stated that he had to go to Virginia to purchase some supplies. This raised concern that his credit with suppliers might not be good, raising even greater concern that the job would stop midstream, and we would be out of luck (this happened to us before with a contractor who went bankrupt). But, we paid when asked, even on one day's notice. By the time the job was "complete", we had paid out over 90%. The final amount of $1000 was paid on 8/2/13. After the fact, we found that the railing "caps" were not glued down, and also noticed some mis-aligned boards. After multiple contacts, he finally got the caps glued down last year. After repeat contacts, he returned to fix the misaligned boards but instead, left a chunk gouged out. It is now going on 2 years later, and after multiple contacts and promises to come out, we are still waiting for a final repair.
We are easy people to get along with, and even delayed posting any reviews in order to give him every opportunity to address this issue! And, under the assumption that he would follow thru with our repairs, we had actually referred him to a co-worker. His work COULD be considered good if he had completed it, and we would give better ratings. But, we would definitely not use this contractor again. And, it is not unreasonable for us to doubt that the "lifetime guarantee" would not be honored should there be any other problems.
