Purchased a Certified Pre-Owned 2012 Kia Sorento in September of 2012 that had 2009 tires on it.
In September of 2012, I purchased a 2012 Certified Pre Owned Kia Sorento with approximately 9,000 miles on it. Because I commute so far for work, I specifically asked about the tires prior to the purchase and was told the car had its original tires from the factory. Between March and May of 2013, I had several issues with the tires (all 4). About once a week, the tire pressure would be low and they would need air. On May 28, my low tire pressure light came on again and I asked the Equipment Mechanic at work to look at my tires. Without removing them, he examined them and told me all 4 were cracking and had nearly no tread. He stated I needed all new tires. I called Future Kia of Clovis that afternoon and spoke to a representative in the service department. I told him that I have only had my car for about 8 months and it only had a total of 24,000 miles on it and the tires needed to be replaced. I asked if the manufaturer had a warranty. He looked up my vehicle in his computer and stated that my tires were the original tires for the vehicle and that Kia does not offer a warranty of any kind for these tires. He told me the brand was Kumho and I could search for a Kumho supplier and see if they would give me any sort of discount since they only lasted 24,000 miles. I called three Kumho suppliers and they were unable to help. That afternoon, I took my car to Billngsley Tire in Coalinga, CA to get a quote for tires. The owner looked at my tires without removing them. He stated that since my vehicle is a 2012, there is no way the tires should already be cracking. He stated that tires don't start cracking until they are 4-5 years old. He stated I needed 4 new tires and that my current tires were too unsafe to be driving on. On May 29, I took my car to Carroll's Tire Warehouse in Hanford, CA, to have 4 new tires installed. The manager inspected my tires without removing them and also stated that he could not believe they were cracking and the tread was so worn out on a 2012 vehicle. He agreed I needed to replace all 4 tires. Upon removing the first tire, he said, "Hey! Come look at this! You are not going to believe this!" And then he pointed to a number on the tire. The number was 5209. He stated that the number is commonly referred to as the "born on date." He stated that the 52 represents the week of the year and the 09 represents the year meaning that my tires were from the 52nd week of 2009. I took a picture on my camera phone. My boyfriend then called Future Kia of Clovis and spoke to Sales Manager [redacted] He told [redacted] about the situation. [redacted] told him that the tires are not their problem and that the car went through an inspection by their service center prior to it being sold and that if it passed inspection that was all that mattered and it didnt matter what tires were on it. However, prior to purchasing the vehicle, I was told the tires were the originals and again when I called the service center on May 28, 2013, I was again told the tires were the originals.
