Service call price of $59.99 was quoted for Tappan Range repair but was charged an excessive "Flat Rate" price of $197.94. Bill was not itemized.
Tappan range oven would not heat. Found [redacted] appl. serv. in yellow pages. Checked with Revdex.com, no complaints and A+ rated. Called them 7/2/12, asked [redacted] what they charge for a service call. She quoted $59.99. She also seemed to know we needed a new ignitor. (this problem has occured 3 previous times and the repair has always been the ignitor and the repair cost has always been a little over $100.00) The price she quoted seemed reasonable. She quoted no other repair cost pricing. She scheduled "[redacted]" to come 7/3/12 between 1 and 4. I was called away for my step dad in [redacted] center but my husband [redacted] was home for [redacted] changed the ignitor..total time less than 45 minutes.As an added note, we had the stove all ready apart for [redacted] and he commented that it was so clean that it looked like I never cook on it. When done, he made out the bill for "Flat Rate" $197.94, tax $13.36 for a total bill of $211.30. [redacted] gave him a check and then asked [redacted] if they give discounts to senior citizens or veterans. [redacted] said NO to seniors but yes to Vets. [redacted] should have written a new check but [redacted] wrote on the bill, "next visit give customer $12.00 discount". Upon seeing the bill I saw no service call fee listed of $59.99, no parts fee listed and nothing indicating an extra amount for any other labor (for which there shouldn't have been any anyway)Only the outrageous flat rate fee of $197.94. I called There and [redacted] transferred me to [redacted] whose only explanation was that "everyone is charging flat rate". I told him I was quoted $59.99 to which he did not respond. I also asked for a parts price to which I got more double talk. He asked how long ago the last ignitor was installed and I told him maybe about 8 years. He said that part has gone up at least $30.00 recently. I told him the reason I called his company was because of his Revdex.com rating and because his name is on his business. I also asked him to send us a check for the $12.00 since it would likely be a long time before I call again for service. He did agree to mail a check after my husband's check clears.I expect to get the check soon (today is 7/12/12) if it comes at all. After talking to [redacted], I decided to go on-line to see if I could find the exact part he installed since he left the box with the numbers on it along with the old ignitor. It is an Electrolux part # XXXXXXXXXX. I had no trouble finding it at [redacted] for $19.95. I know that businesses need to make a profit, but what [redacted] has done makes a mockery of honest business practices. Needless to say, I am outraged and feel completely taken advantage of.....cheated!!! I have not called him back to get a second dose of his side stepping. He should NOT have an A+ rating and he needs to be complained about for using such deceptive practices. Aside from [redacted], he has [redacted] giving customers a false representation as to how they charge up-front.(The old Bait and Switch?) If they did tell how they REALLY charge, they would NOT get business. I probably will not get any rebate as a result of this complaint, but [redacted] needs to know he can't fool everyone, or use his rating at Revdex.com to dupe unsuspecting customers. I will NEVER call his company for service again.
