D. R. Horton Home Builders

Recently my wife and I approached D. R. Horton Home Builders in [redacted] to view the available houses and floorplans. We were shown several houses, but my wife and I were sold on the Sheffield elevation A floorplan. The house was everything we wanted. A grand entry way, spacious bedrooms, and large living areas. Unfortunately, this particular neighborhood was a bit pricy. We raised our concerns with the on duty real estate agent and she told us about another D. R. Horton neighborhood within a close proximity in which they could build that exact same house for 60,000.00 dollars less. My wife and I agreed to the deal and signed a contract for the Sheffield elevation A floorplan for a base price of 239,900.00. Fast forward a month or so and it was time for our frame walkthrough. Something was different. Noticeably different. I immediately had concerns. I took a tape measurer to my house and of the model home we had been shown. As it turns out, D. R. Horton had "modified" the plans and the house that was built for us was 24 inches less wide than the spec home. The advertised square footage for the house is 3519. However, after the modifications the actual square footage is closer to 3300 sf. And yet the advertisements and webpage and all the marketing material we could find says 3519. That doesn't include the lost space in the basement either, thats another 113 sf. Not only had we lost square footage but they had also modified our garage doors and framing in the basement. Including door and window placement.We approached the company with our findings and all they had to say was tough luck. We had sat down with the D.R. Horton representative and figured out the dollar amount lost in square feet. That number was 19,000.00 dollars. All my wife and I asked was for 15,000.00 dollars worth of soft cost ammenaties added to the home. They regected this offer with no counter and are pushing us in the direction of just taking our money and walking.
