To Whom It
May Concern:
Before I
go into all the details of what happened and what was communicated, I want to
point out the breakdown of the charges so everyone can see how unfortunate
this complaint really is. We quoted [redacted] $389 for the inspection
service. When she decided not...

to do the work, she owed us the $389 plus the tow
bill of $75 which DOES NOT include ANY MARK-UP as well as a very small amount
for the labor to put the car back together so she could have it SAFELY towed to
her father’s auto repair shop. So, of the $514 she was charged, ONLY $50 was to
have it put back together. [redacted] Labor Hours for removing and
reinstalling her transmission is 7.7 hours which would be $736.51 not including
the tow of $75. So, instead of over $800, she was charged $514. AGAIN, that’s
ONLY $50 additional and, as you'll see below, she was made aware of the possibility of additional charges.
[redacted] was
only charged an additional small amount because her engine doesn’t have any
support left once you remove the transmission. Normally we can strap an engine
up to hold it in place and be safe for transport. But, in this case we needed
to put a lot of the parts back together to do it properly and avoid causing her
additional proble** when they moved the car.
We
diagnosed the Malibu and determined it was an internal issue and that, in fact,
just changing the solenoid pack was not going to fix the problem. In order for
us to fully understand what was going on inside the transmission and determine
what had to be replaced, we had no choice but to recommend a full diagnostic
where we remove the transmission from the car, open up the transmission,
measure and inspect every last part inside the transmission and then determine
which parts need to be replaced and what caused the problem. We communicated
this to [redacted] and told her that the charge for the inspection would go
toward her actual repairs if she decided to repair the vehicle. We also
informed her that if she didn’t do the repairs, there would be other charges
she would owe us including the tow. We told her before we even towed her car to
our shop that the tow wouldn’t be free of charge if she didn’t have the work
done here or if we found the problem to be something minor instead of a major
transmission repair.
As for our
“ridiculously-priced labor,” I assume she is referring to the quote we gave her
to fix her car. Her transmission was in much worse shape inside than hoped
which didn’t make it cost effective to repair so we recommended replacing it
with a remanufactured unit with a 2 year / 24,000 mile warranty. Keep in mind
my margins are much less lower when we do this but we are ethics based and
recommended only what is best for the customer. Also keep in mind she was being
quoted $2200 just for the solenoid pack at another shop which was not going to fix her problem (internal parts came apart inside that caused damage to the solenoid pack). The solenoid pack
doesn’t require that the transmission be removed at all so it’s less than 2
hours or labor to do. We were quoting her $3600 for a whole transmission with fluid,
labor etc. which is 8-10 hours of labor. Bottom line, transmissions are
expensive to repair.
**.
[redacted] received the highest level of care and communication possible. The fact
that she has a transmission that is bad and is going to cost a lot of money to
repair is unfortunate but there is nothing I can do to change that. We did our
best to communicate effectively to her and kept her informed at all times. For
her to have a problem now because she doesn’t feel she should have to pay an
extra $50 is a little extreme and unfortunate. However, I wish her the best of
luck and hope the replacement transmission she gets is of good quality and lasts
her a long time.
Sincerely,
[redacted] **
