My husband needed a quiet place to sleep during the day when he was working night shift on a maintenance outage at the nearby power plant He moved into a cottage at Erie Island the first day of March and moved out on the 31st It is now the end of the first week in June and we still don't have our deposit money back I have called, called, called, called and called againI've talked to different people and they all assure me that the money will be credited but it STILL has not been They even told me that they tried to put the money back on our card after the cottage was initially cleared but they only had the last digits of our credit card and couldn't do it, she was sure glad I called back! It has been a month since I gave her the number to put the deposit back on and we still don't have the money Very convenient for them to keep stalling when we are nearly a thousand miles away and cannot go in and stand at the desk until they fix the problem like we had to do when we stayed there I filed a dispute with my credit card company this morning
We left the place in better condition than we got it too To say the place is derelict is too harsh but everything is over-used, worn down and on its last legs The is so antiquated that we had to buy data from our cell phone company to use our devices even though we had a bar signal from their wireless There were only hangers in the entire place and there were closets! The floor in the main bedroom creaked and flexed so badly we were leery of stepping on a couple of places for fear of going through There were no working light bulbs when we first got there either, I bought light bulbs to have adequate lighting and I also took every one of them with us when we left and put their burned out ones back in the sockets! They promised a new flat screen tv when checking the place out and that finally happened after MUCH complaining and days into our stay We had to perk coffee in the living room on the corner table because the GFI outlet by the kitchen sink wouldn't reset so it was useless The microwave had the wrong carousel plate in it and wouldn't rotate The crisper drawers in the refrigerator would fall out on the floor every time you opened the door The pitcher in the cupboard was split out and wouldn't hold anything without it leaking out all over the place The cooking utensils were so cheap they melted and either bent or strung plastic through our food if we didn't really watch it Literally, you couldn't turn a hamburger over in the skillet without curling the plastic on the end of the spatula
While watching tv one evening the spiral staircase hand rail came loose and flung a screw head across the room It was under tension and the screws looked like they were made out of plasticThe fireplace didn't put out any heat and it shut itself off and restarted constantly as if it were on some kind of timer that we couldn't controlIt was aesthetic ambiance only
The toilet handle was stiff and had to be "fiddled" with every time it was flushed or it would continually run water out into the bowl and refill the tank The bottom of the bath tub was soft and wouldn't drain all the water out unless you made the effort every time to push it out with your foot or hand There were no throw rugs to step out on either so not being able to dry our feet in the tub was hazardous because of the tile floor We had to buy our own towels so we didn't have spares for throwing on the floor to walk on Basically, you held your foot up and shook it off like a cat and stepped out onto a pair of flip flops or a pile of dirty clothes to keep from busting your seat
They also promised a washer and dryer but that never happened We lugged our laundry down the steps, snaked around the cottages on the sidewalk out to the parking lot, loaded it up in the pickup, drove it to the hotel, got the key to the laundry house, drove over to the laundry, washed clothes (coin operated), drove back up to the hotel, turned the key back in, drove back to the cottage parking lot, snaked back around to the cottage via the sidewalk, back up the cottage steps and into the cottage Handy right? This was also when there was about 16" of snow on the ground and as cold as Ohio had ever seen it
Probably the worst thing about our stay was the water It was atrocious! That may be too kind It smelled like sulfur or something rotten, tasted so vile that we didn't dare drink it and built up on everything and had to be scrubbed off We packed gallons and gallons of water in to drink, brush our teeth and rinse off in the shower before getting out We were told that they were fixing the situation but nothing different happen with it while we were there and we were right next to the water treatment system on the campground They would have a truck come once or twice a week and pump something into it and leave but the truck driver wouldn't say what he was doing when I tried to talk to him about it The water was so bad that we felt dirty after bathing if we didn't rinse off with bottled water It was physically tangible and left a coating of yuck that wouldn't rinse out of your hair or off of your skin I used more hand and body lotion than I've ever used in my entire life! If you didn't lotion up after coming into contact with the water you thought you were going to crack and break apart My hands would split and bleed if I didn't keep lotion on That was not from the dry winter air I also scalded our dishes after I washed them When the water boiled there would be sediment in the bottom of the pan that I'd pour out It was just gross
We were also amazed that when we went to pay our rent that we'd have to hunt someone down because the front desk was unmanned I tried once for days to pay before I finally caught up with someone and then, she complained about our rent being late The chef was at the desk once taking notes for people and answering the phone but he couldn't take payments! Now I can't get my money back!!! Imagine my shock and surprise that there is complete disorganization and utter chaos within the business office
Initially, we cut them some slack for this being their "off season" but that didn't last very long This place wasn't cheap, and it seemed like once they got us there and started taking our money it all went down hill from there We were at the end of our tolerance by the time our stay was over and SO ready to get out of there and have them in our rear view mirror If you're open for business and you take someone's money you should provide the service that's being paid for PERIOD!
We've learned our lesson, we will never darken their door again and we'll tell everyone that will listen about our experience and displeasure Hopefully, the next outage hands and other road travelers will get wind of this before they have to go through the same B.Swe did
