January 22, 2017 *** ***The Revdex.com*** *** *** *** *** ** ***ID # ***Dear Ms ***:This is in response to your letter, dated 1/13/and received by me on 1/17/17, regarding complaint # ***.The customer’s vehicle, a Ftruck with a
mileage of 58000, was towed to my shop in April because of a failed planetary gear set which blew a hole in the rear section of the transmission housingAccording to the customer, this was the second failed transmission in this truck and asked if there could be any product improvement or heavy duty upgrades for commercial use Since there was a hole in the transmission housing and housings are hard to come by, we suggested that we install a factory reman exchange transmission rather than rebuild it ourselvesThe customer agreed and a reman transmission was installed which had a year warranty from the remanufacturing company The customer was given all warranty paperwork. In February 2016, the customer called stating he was having transmission problems with his Ford Ftruck which we had worked on previouslyHe made no mention that on this particular vehicle we had not actually rebuilt the transmission ourselves, but had installed a factory remanWe do hundreds of transmissions a year, and many of them are this type of transmission, so it is impossible to remember which one we rebuilt or which one a reman was installed inSince it had been almost years, and our standard warranty is year, we did not assume this would be a warranty repair, nor did the customer state this The vehicle was towed to our shop and the customer was insistant that the truck be repaired as soon as possible because he needed it for his business He immediately wanted to know how much it would costHe was advised that we would have to test the vehicle for any computer malfunctions, and if that wasn’t the case, would remove the transmission to see what had failedUpon inspection, the vehicle underneath showed definite signs of heavy use and harsh conditions because of excessive corrosion and packed mudIt was only after removing the transmission and torque converter and thoroughly cleaning the transmission with a high powered jet parts washer, that it was discovered that this was not one of our rebuilds, but a reman exchange transmissionAt no time did the customer relay that information to usAfter many phone calls from the customer, wanting the truck as soon as possible., he was advised that this was a reman exchange transmission and he then remembered it was a reman with a year warranty., but he did not have the original warranty paperworkAfter the transmission was cleaned, it was discovered that the failure was from a ground problem, possibly from amodifications, a bad starter, excessive corrosion from plowing and salty conditions, etc and he was advised that most remans are not covered under the warranty if failure is do to an outside source or abuseThe customer still wanted us to repair the vehicle because he needed it for his business and wanted to know the costHe was advised that the cost would be close to the original repair with a year warrantyHe was not happy with that and wanted a better dealI told him I would repair the transmission and would need to make the repair on the ground problem so he did not have the same problem again for 1/the amount, but I could only warranty it for days since this would basically only pay for the parts, not the laborHe agreed and the vehicle was repaired, as well as the grounds, with a day warranty and the customer paid $1900.He has now called, stating he has transmission problems again, but we have no way of knowing the exact issue, which could be anything from a blown fuse, a bad transfer case, computer malfunction, etcIt has been approximately months since we did the repair with a day warranty Also, given the history of this truck having transmissions fail in possibly less than 80,miles (although I am not sure what the mileage is now), and all the transmissions failing from different reasons and all the transmissions being rebuilt from different shops, and the fact that I saw first hand the signs of harsh conditions and heavy use, it's possible that any of these failures could be caused from abuse, misue or improper maintenance.Sincerely,Hi Performance Auto Service
