J T B Construction Reviews (2)

Review: I hired a licensed contractor to complete several projects at my house. Not only did he do a very shoddy job, he left me with several issues that could be a health hazard. Namely, the electrical wiring he installed is exposed and is a fire hazard. He also re-vented my furnace incorrectly. [redacted] has since shut off service to my furnace as it is a hazard. Carbon Monoxide can build up and cause health related issues because he did not vent it properly. He also installed my countertops and literally butchered them. They now need to be replaced as they are not even salvageable. I now question all of his work. I have told him I would like these items remedied, but I have not heard back from him.Desired Settlement: I need a refund on the work he incorrectly performed including but not limited to the electrical, re-venting and countertops. I am looking for reimbursement of expenses that will be accrued to remedy the various situations mentioned.

Business' Initial Response

In the interactions with this client, the problems did not arise until final payment discussions were taking place. I had several meetings with the client and completed several punchlist items that are typical on a job. Near the end I was requesting formal documentation of work that needed to be completed based on her punchlist items and payment due amount, which the client refused to accept or sign.

We meet regarding the countertops, which were specific to a seam and that was all that was presented. I agreed to replace the countertops at my expense and even had a sub-contractor come in and agree to do the work.

In regards to the wiring all dicusscussion were specific to one switch that when I was present worked fine. I however, agreed to review the wiring to determine if any issues existed. I in no way left any wiring exposed. This house had several issues including exposed wires that were there prior to my work and were not part of the scope of work I had to complete.

For the venting, originally she said it was [redacted] than it was [redacted] I told the client that I would correct any issues and wanted the contact information of the person who indicated an issue to verify what that was, but the client would not provide this information. I told the client I would have my HVAC person come to review, but was again denied.

All of this is documented in not only e-mails but in a written document that was supplied to the client. I in no way refused to come out or did not communicate with the client. The client refused to sign the document deatailing all the corrections I would make and the payment of the new counter-tops. The last communication with this client, which I have copies of via her e-mail, was that she did not want me to come out to fix any work. Again, I made every effort and have documented proof of my communication and committment to resolve the issue with the client.

Consumer's Final Response

(The consumer indicated he/she DID NOT accept the response from the business.)

The many assertions in the response are simply flat out lies. I have had licensed electricians and plumbers out here and they have stated the work done by [redacted] is not up to code and in some cases a fire hazard. The HVAC reventing was absolutely the work that he did. Mr. [redacted] is making statements that are lies and absolutely has nothing to back his assertions up with.

I have filed a complaint with the Bond Company and they can provide a report showing the outcome of the investigation. When I receive a copy, I will be able to provide a 3rd parties point of view that is in fact, an expert in the field. As mentioned, I have already had licensed electricians and plumbers that were SHOCKED to see what Mr. [redacted] did.

Mr. [redacted] did offer to continue to "fix" the multiple issues, however, he would only do so if I paid him MORE MONEY. I was absolutely not going to do that. I had already paid him too much and was finding out about the quality of work he had done.

The exposed wires in the attic are 100% the work of Mr. [redacted]. This can be shown by photographs and by electricians that have inspected the wires.

I do not know what Mr. [redacted] is trying to say about the receipts. His response did not make sense to me. I can attest through documentation that he in fact, was trying to charge me for multiple items/supplies which was his responsibility to pay for.

I can provide photographs of the multiple nicks, chips and jagged edges of the countertops. Mr. [redacted] knows the issue with the countertops is more than "just a seam." This is an absolute lie, again, on the the part of Mr. [redacted].

I would like to provide documentation and photographs to support my assertions. Please let me know how I can do this.

As far as Mr. [redacted]'s assertions, I would invite him to provide this documentation he says that he has.

I did express happiness at times with the project. This is because I did not know the full extent of his poor workmanship. I also wanted to be nice. I had been pointing out SO MANY problems, that I felt the need to "off-set" all the negative feedback on his work by providing positive feedback when I possibly could. Even then, I found out later the items I provided positive feedback for was also done incorrectly.

Bottom line, I can support each and every assertion with photographs and reports by experts in the field as well as email correspondence between Mr. [redacted] and I. Please let me know how I can provide this so that I can support my statements with actual evidence.

Business' Final Response

As previously stated, I tried to work with this customer to address her issues. I in no way will disparage this person - but will state that we meet and discussed items as the project went along. I have witnesses and even her own documentation of the counter-tops which in regards to the seem and not nicks, etc as stated by the client. In response to the electrical - there is no way that there is a cost of 7000.00 to repair work that was done for lighting. A contractor would be charging this for an entire redo of all electrical in a large home. I did work for kitchen lights - an in no way left any exposed wiring. In regards to receipts - this was discussed with her and she was not charged for these items. They were on the receipts but removed from the total - as discussed with the client. Again, this client had an entire kitchen demoed, kitchen drywall, cabinets put together and installed, etc. These are all items she was happy with and have notes of her excitement over the job. As I have stated I agreed to work with the client, meet with [redacted] to discuss the issues (which since I have now seen there notice did not relate to work I had completed but duct-tape that was used at another portion of the vent - not my work), have the counter-tops reinstalled by another sub-contractor, but in the end I was refused. I am not sure how much more I can state other than I am in no way a Kamikaze contractor or someone that cannot be trusted. I have numerous clients I have done extensive work for that can and will attest to my work.

Consumer

Response:

(The consumer indicated he/she DID NOT accept the response from the business.)

[redacted] is inferring that the issues only arose when he requested final payment. This is simply not true. My frustration with his work occurred prior to April 23, 2013 and I wrote him an email stating such (included in the file I sent to Revdex.com).

The job was in no way completed when Mr. [redacted] began to ask for more money. I was in no way going to give him more money for a job done so poorly and not even complete! I had already paid him too much and was beginning to realize I was in deep.

PG&E shut down my HVAC system and issued a Hazard Notice due to him venting my HVAC system incorrectly. I was told that I would have been exposed to carbon monoxide had I turned it on!

I have had a licensed electrician to the house who estimates it would cost over $7000 to simply FIX the absolute mess that [redacted] left me in. He has left exposed wires in my attic and my basement and recently the plumbing that he did in my kitchen has begin to leak and my basement is now full of water! So I have exposed wires and backed up water inches apart from each other.

I was going to have insulation installed in my attic but was told they could not install it because of all of the EXPOSED wires. I was told it was a fire hazard.

The countertops are the least of my problems. But it will be a very expensive fix when I have already paid over $1600 for quartz that was destroyed by Mr. [redacted]'s hack job. However, he is lying when he states it is only a seam. He admitted to me himself, that he cut the slabs incorrectly and that is why he was willing to "cover the cost" of replacing them. However, he wanted to charge me for "other items" that were not in our contract in no doubt, to make up for the out of pocket costs he was going to be in with paying for the replacement countertops. Yes, he is correct when he stated I would not sign his documents because he was trying to strong arm me into paying for supplies of his in the amount of $2500. He supplied receipts, which only added up to $2000, and included items like sawhorses, diamond blade, saws, copper, electrical and gas line supplies. Our contract price included rough materials so I should have not been charged for these items and I think anyone knows I should not be charged for the purchase of his equipment! So yes, I refused to sign the paperwork.

But it was much more than a seam that was the problem with the countertops and Mr. [redacted] knows it. He didn't cut the quartz with water and used the wrong blade. The countertops are jagged and chipped everyone he cut. The seams are dirty, off center and he used the wrong product so the seam around the sink is cloudy and bubbling up. That also might be why both sinks FELL THROUGH into the cabinets when I tried to use them and put dishes in them!

As far as the electrical, he didn't do any of it up to code and he knows this. He is flatly lying by saying the he did not leave exposed wiring. I have photos and also an estimate from a licensed electrician that back up this fact.

Mr. [redacted] offered to have a licensed HVAC person come out to look at the re-venting that he did and I told him to please do so. However, he never got around to it. I had PG&E out and showed them the vent job he did and they shut it down. At that point, I was so angry I did not want to even deal with Mr. [redacted] anymore. He had ASSURED me that his vent job was "just fine." Thank God I had PG&E take a look. Had I believed him, my family could have been exposed to carbon monoxide!

Mr. [redacted] is correct in stating he agreed to come out and fix the multiple issues and he is also correct in stating I did not want him to come fix anything. I absolutely did not want him coming to my house to fix anything ever again. The guy does not know what he is doing. He is a hazard to society! He not only did a shoddy, sloppy job but actually put my family in danger.

I am not in a situation where I am having people out to give me estimates on fixing his work. All of them are shocked by what they are seeing. I have filed a claim against his contractor's bond, but it is clear the repairs will be more than the bond is even worth.

There is no resolution that can be made with Mr. [redacted]. I am reporting him to Revdex.com so that others out there are aware. Had I found a complaint against him, I would not have hired him. I am only trying to warn others about him.

He is a like a kamikaze contractor out there trying to make as much money as he can without a care in the world about what kind of mess he leaves behind. I caught him in multiple lies throughout the time he was working at my house.. some small, some big. Whatever the case, the guy cannot be trusted. Regardless of that, he does not seem to know what he is doing and/or just doesn't care.

I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to complaint ID [redacted], and find that this resolution is satisfactory to me.

spoke with Ms. [redacted]. She stated that the company's bond paid her in full to get all items fixed. She stated that the complaint has been resolved.
