Jason G. Collett Construction Reviews (1)

Review: I hired [redacted] in October of 2009 to remodel my home. I did most of the demolition and he was hired to build cabinets and install new light fixtures. He estimated the cost to be $4000. I paid him up front and in cash because he said that if I paid him in cash, he would give me a discount. I am a single mom and I need to save every penny I can. He began the work but needed some help so my friends step son came and helped him out. I paid the step son myself out of my own pocket. I work from home on Fridays so [redacted] was also fed on Fridays. Sheet rock was hung and frames began but then [redacted] disappeared for a year. I had no functioning kitchen and the wires for the lights hung down from the ceiling. After about a year I was finally able to contact [redacted] and he was appologetic. He had become ill and was unable to work. No explanation why his wife did not contact me to let me know. I offered him more money or a suggestion that I hire someone else to finish the job because I could not live like that anymore. He said no, he felt bad and would come an finish the job. He finally came and did the counter tops, doors and drawers. I hung the lights myself and covered the outlets myself. He took my stove fan and never replaced it. The cabinets still are not finished and are not hung properly. The worst contractor

Desired Settlement: [redacted] is a shady business owner and contractor. I just want other folks aware to NOT hire him.

Business' Initial Response

I find it funny that [redacted] words her complaint as if we never met before she "hired" me. She was a family friend and someone who married my wife and I back in 2004. She is an old friend that things did not go as planed for her. See I was not remodeling her house I was helping remodel her kitchen and I was not doing it as a contractor but as a friend. She did not give me $4000.00 up front she tried and I said no let's do this as we go. So her saying she gave me all the money up front is a lie! She was not getting a cash discount she was getting a friend discount (at cost) I agreed to do most of the work between jobs and on the weekends. As I needed money for materials I would come and let her know.

I started the work and find out that she had a leak in her roof had to patch that as for it was rotting the frame to the house so we show it to her. She had me take off a panel of wall board and see how bad it was. At that time I told her I don't know if they make that panel anymore. She said "can we put new sheetrock up in the kitchen instead" that when I told her it would be more to do so she said I know! So we fix a leak in the roof, took out wall paneling, hung new sheetrock, tape and texture. I continued to work on her kitchen and she had some wiring danger with some 220 wire so I had a electrician come out and run 65ft of new 220 wiring from the kitchen to the electrical panel that I paid for. All the extra work came up to $3200. This is where it went south. She agreed to everything and when I needed some more money she would not give us any. I was willing to work with her because she is a single mom and a friend. So the fact that she said she offered more money is a lie.

I was not gone for a year I did get sick (I called and let her know) but not for a year. Part of the reason was of the money and we agreed I would do this between jobs. But the biggest reason was I was paying out of my pocket to finish the job. Now after talking with her I did feel bad, but not for the reason she said but I do value friends but as I went back I seen she was not going to be a pleasant person. So I finish everything except for the painting of the cabinets and stove hood. I figured for $3200 she could paint the cabinets and I would walk away and give us some time apart.

As for her friends step son she wanted me to hire him I said I could not afford to hire someone at the time. She still wanted me to hire him so she had him come out and she said she would pay him but she wanted me to see how good of a worker he is. He was a good kid wish I could of afforded it but couldn't.
