Limeade is a corporate wellness technology company that drives real employee engagement through well-being improvementOur technology
powers the well-being programs for hundreds of large customersWe create a very relevant, personalized and streamlined experience for users, which means we integrate with other partners and programs to make it easy and fun for users to participate in their well-being programsAs people participate in activities or challenges, they receive points and rewards, which are selected by the employer or their benefits consultantRewards differ per customer and range from things like company swag and lunch with the CEO to PTO days or HSA contributions
Since we adhere to strict privacy policies and comply with all HIPAA regulations, we cannot specify the nuanced details of this specific caseHowever, we have confirmed with the employer’s payroll service that $was not taken out of this employee’s paycheck nor any other employee’s paycheck that participated in the wellness programThe participant did earn a reward through the well-being program, which was then taxed per lawThe user was notified that taxes would apply at the time of claiming the rewardThe $reward did show up on the paycheck as earned incomeThe portion that was subtracted covered the appropriate taxes for that $150, which would also appear on the pay stub
It seems there may have been some confusion regarding the line items listed on the pay stubIt may have appeared that the $reward was deducted from the participant’s paycheck, when in fact only the taxes from the reward were deductedThis was also confirmed with the employer’s payroll department
Thank you for the opportunity to respond to this caseIf you have any questions, please let me know

Gift cards earned through wellness programs are considered supplemental income by the Federal GovernmentAs such, Federal Supplemental Income Tax must be withheld from the employee’s paycheckIn this case, the money withheld from the paycheck represents this Federal tax and not interest charged
Wellness program rewards are offered directly by the employers - not LimeadeBy completing activities, employees earn points in the Limeade wellness program towards rewards, like the gift cardLimeade does not profit from the rewards earned by employees
Specifically, Limeade is the technology that powers the wellness program As such, Limeade does not control, dictate, or have access to employee’s payroll deductionsIf the employee has any additional questions regarding the taxes withheld from a paycheck, we recommend they contact their employer’s payroll and benefits department directly

We adhere to strict privacy policies and comply with all HIPAA regulations so we cannot specify the nuanced details of this specific case. However, we do acknowledge a communication breakdown with one of our partner organizations. We’ve worked closely with our partner and received confirmation they will be resolving the issue and awarding the appropriate reward to the user who reached out. We shared this update in our most recent apology letter to this user.
