Moyer & Sons Moving And Storage Inc. Reviews (1)

Review: In October 2013, I contracted with Moyers Moving and Storage to move my household goods to a storage unit in [redacted], Maryland. They sent out an estimator to give me a solid estimate, and that estimator provided me with an estimate of approximately $1200.00. I agreed to this price. During the week prior to the move, I spoke several times with [redacted] to confirm the date and time and also the price. I told him I could not afford a large departure from that amount and he assured me that their estimators do a very good job of providing accurate estimates. I reiterated that I could not afford a $2000.00 moving bill and he told me he understood. We agreed to proceed. Because my budget was tight, I moved all of my boxes and all of the small furniture down to the first floor to help expedite the move and to control costs. There was only two bedrooms of furniture, three area rugs, a dining room, living and family room furniture to move. His movers arrived on time and as scheduled. They offered additional insurance on my goods and I agreed to another approximately $200.00 for full replacement value on my goods, brining the total up to just under $1500.00. I have all of the paperwork indicating the estimate and the purchase of the additional insurance. They began moving furniture out of the house and staging it in the garage. They moved right along until around 11:00 am when I noticed that very little was leaving the house and there was still quite a bit to be done. I went out and questioned the crew because no one was in the house working on anything or carrying anything. They were all standing around the truck talking. They told me that they were staging the furniture to be sure to fit it all in the truck, then they were going to take their lunch break. Shortly after 1:00 pm, when still no more goods were leaving the house, the gentleman in charge came and told me that there was no work for anyone on the next day and would I agree to have another person come and help with the move. Because this would be at an added expense, I told him no. It wasn't until around 2 or 3:00 pm that more goods began leaving the house. They did not actually finish loading up until around 4:00 pm which I thought was entirely too long for the small amount of goods to be moved. They told me they needed to take a long way to the storage unit and also wanted to stop and get something to drink. I met them a time later at the storage unit and they unloaded and packed the unit until around 7:00 that evening. They then presented me with a bill for just under $2000.00. I was shocked particularly when I had made it very clear to [redacted] that such a figure was not in the realm of the possible or even acceptable. I paid them $1500.00 by check and told them that I would talk with the office on the next day.

I paid the amount that I agreed to, plus the additional insurance, plus a bit more for an even $1500.00 amount. I have not left them unpaid. I believe that because this crew knew there was "no work for anyone" the next day, they slowed down their work and tried to milk the job for additional funds. This is entirely unacceptable. I spoke to [redacted] as agreed and told him what had happened and told them I felt his crew tried to milk to job because they knew there was no work for anyone the next day (they even told me this). He said he would check with his crew and get back to me. He did and of course they said this was not true, so he expected me to honor the additional $500.00 charge (even though this figure represents a nearly 50% departure from the original estimate (that was provided by their estimator after having seen the goods to be moved). I declined and told him that his crew also tore up one of my area rugs, and also damaged a number of my large wooden pieces. He said he would not honor the additional insurance I bought and paid for until he received his 50% overage charges. I told him I was filing this complaint. I have not paid the amount and they continue to bill me and add $9.00 each month.Desired Settlement: Because they have damaged my furniture and will not honor the insurance I bought, I desire the entire $1500.00 I paid them in October to be refunded so that I can have my pieces repaired. I also want them to stop harassing me for money that I do not owe them and billing additional charges.
