I am still in the process of responding to the shops' claim that I was asking to have repairs done for free after I paid $2000 dollars. I am requesting a little more time to provide documents in this transaction.

Review: Before leaving for Boise, Idaho with my boat on vacation I went into this repair facility to correct a issue with the running light that was not working. After looking at my problem for a day, I was informed that I needed "a complete new electrical system." (cost $307). Interestingly enough, the day after the work was completed I had to return to this shop to have the problem "re-fixed." This time I was informed that a new wiring harness was needed. I open with this to show the kind of shoddy work being done by this establishment. In point of fact, although the problem was temporarily fixed, two months later my boat is now in Idaho and the running lights still do not work...however, that is not my main issue with this shop.

What I am incensed about concerns a subject that could have resulted in my death had it not been discovered before I left on the trip. In addition to the lighting issue I had asked them to inspect the brakes and wheel bearings for proper operation for my trip. I was informed that although my brakes were rusty, they could sand them down, adjust them, and they would work just fine and the bearings just needed to be re-packed. I was assured that all would be good for my planned 1000 mile journey. And when I came to pick up my boat I was assured in no uncertain terms that "the brakes work fine...have a good trip!"

So you can imagine my surprise, and dismay, when I drove from Poway to Vista, a total of 13 miles, to have my hitch inspected, only to find out that I had NO BRAKES AT ALL! The mechanic ([redacted], at Vista Brakes, [redacted]) told me that they COULD NOT POSSIBLY have checked the brakes because the plunger that activates them was DISCONNECTED from the master cylinder inside the hitch!!! And he showed me how to look under the hitch and see it for myself IN PLAIN SIGHT! It cost me roughly $787 to fix the hitch, and have the hydraulic lines replaced, but what really sets me off is the fact that these disreputable clowns are claiming to do work that they are not IN ANY WAY qualified to do!

I year ago I HAD a travel trailer accident due to having to hit the brakes hard at 55 mph caused by a semi weaving in front of me, and I learned the hard way HOW IMPORTANT and LIFE SAVING your brakes are, ESPECIALLY when you are hauling something heavy behind you. This trip was going to take me over 1000 miles of mountain highways between here and Idaho...a problem ANYWHERE along that way could have meant my death, and loss to my family. It is FOR THIS REASON that I am taking this time to tell you what a bunch of disreputable crooks are running this shop....I don't know what you can do about it, but hopefully with enough complaints people will quit going there!Desired Settlement: I want this case kept in your files for anyone else to read and understand what they're dealing with if they get involved with these bums. I paid $550 for work that was totally unsatisfactory and had I not had my hitch inspected further could have resulted in my death.

Response:

I find it

interesting that Mr. [redacted] leaves vital information out regarding his

electrical repair work done at Pacific Auto Electric, information that of

course clearly affects the validity of his erroneous statements. In no

uncertain terms, Mr. [redacted] bears false witness to the incidents of June 24th,

2013 & his return on August 21st, 2013. Mr. [redacted] came to

Pacific Auto Electric with an electrical problem on his 1996 boat trailer.

Pacific Auto Electric agreed to inspect his concern of a short to ground on his

running light circuit then advise him of the necessary repairs that would be

needed to rectify the issue. In addition to this electrical work performed by

Pacific Auto Electric, Mr. [redacted] asked that our technician also check the wheel

bearings & shoes as a courtesy to him, which PAE did as a,

“courtesy to our client”.

When Mr.

[redacted] got the results of the estimate of $684 in repairs to his boat

trailer, he informed our Manager that he had a $550 budget he was willing to

spend. He asked if Pacific Auto Electric would do the minimal amount of repairs

to the running lights circuit; repack wheel bearings & brake shoe/drums-clean

& adjust. As for the initial costs for repairs, Mr. [redacted] asked if PAE

would grant him a discount in order to meet his budget, PAE obliged by giving

into a labor discount of $134.30, although, Mr. [redacted] mentions nothing of that

fact, even though it is boldly stated in his invoice. Now why would Mr.

[redacted] omit this crucial fact unless of course, he’s hiding something? I’ll

let the readers decide that one.

It’s true

that Mr. [redacted] returned a couple days later, still having issues with the

running lights. It’s when he gets to where our PAE Tech traced the problem to a

faulty truck adapter pin connection, that Mr. [redacted]’ Alzheimer’s, flairs

up. I believe Mr. [redacted] got his, “wires-crossed” when making his

recollection of what transpired that day, a sure sign of “se·nil·i·ty”. This

running lights problem Mr. [redacted] was having had nothing to do with the new

PAE wiring harness and everything to do with a faulty wiring harness plug off

his truck. PAE only repaired the trailer. Regardless of that fact, our

technician still rectified his problem, then installed a couple wheel bearing

caps he was missing because Pacific Auto Electric is an advocate of superior

customer relations. As for suggesting a new wiring harness, that was for his, “Truck”

that was towing the trailer, not the trailer itself. Look no further than the

invoice in question where it plainly states that PAE removed old trailer wiring

harness & replaced it with a whole new one. In addition, removed trailer

wheels, inspected brake shoes & brake drums then made necessary repairs to

depreciated drums, shoes, readjusted shoes to proper settings & repacked

wheel bearings, all for a discounted

price from $684.30 to $550!

Pacific Auto Electric did exactly what Mr. [redacted] requested; make what

repairs were necessary to the lighting harness, wheel bearings, shoes &

drums but not exceeding $550. Pacific Auto Electric did not check for any additional

problems because Mr. [redacted] would not authorize it. He flat out denied any

additional diagnostics to his boat trailer.

“In addition to the lighting issue I had asked them to inspect

the brakes and wheel bearings for proper operation for my trip” Mr. [redacted]’ own words. He makes a

partially valid statement, here; his first concern was the trailer running

lights. Once completed, check the wheel bearings for he thought he’d blown a

seal. Nothing mentioned about a complete brake inspection as that was more than

he was willing to spend at the time.

“I was informed that although my brakes were rusty, they could

sand them down, adjust them, and they would work just fine and the bearings

just needed to be re-packed.” Had the, “S” been eliminated from

the word, “brakes” & “shoes and drums” followed, the above statement would

be true for all intense purposes. Altering one word & adding two more makes

a world of difference in the context of this statement.

I called,

Rich at Vista Brakes and asked if he was aware of his citation in this, Revdex.com

Complaint of Mr. [redacted]’; “The mechanic ([redacted], at Vista Brakes, 760-724-5157) told me that

they COULD NOT POSSIBLY have checked the brakes because the plunger that

activates them was DISCONNECTED from the master cylinder inside the hitch!!!”- He had no idea of this post. I told

[redacted] what I’ve disclosed here. He confirmed that the repairs he made were not

in any way, the same repairs Pacific Auto Electric made on Mr. [redacted]’

Trailer. Furthermore, he agreed that’s about what you’d pay for a complete

brake system repair on a trailer like that, $1350 (w/o a new trailer harness

installed) verifying Mr. [redacted] got exactly what he asked for. I’m a little

curious as to why Mr. [redacted] would go out of his way to have his hitch

inspected, unless he knew the system still needed attention. & yes! I

informed [redacted] I would be mentioning him & our discussion when writing this

response. On 7/10/13, Mr. [redacted] phoned PAE from Vista Brakes asking if he

bought the master cylinder would we install it for free. I said, no because it

was unrelated to work PAE had done on it, but we would grant him a reduction in

the labor rate to, $95 per hour. Mr. [redacted] said he would get back to me.

7/25/13- Mr.

[redacted] dropped off a copy of his Service & Supply Invoice [redacted] for

$747.64, demanding we pay it or he was going to phone the B.A.R. on this and

left. I retrieved the original PAE invoice and called the B.A.R. myself and

explained the work we performed and the work Vista Brake performed as I have

done here. The B.A.R. confirmed that there was no infraction committed by

Pacific Auto Electric.

8/21/13 at

9:50 Am Mr. [redacted] entered Pacific Auto Electric and demanded a refund for

services performed on his boat trailer. When I tried to explain our position in

this matter, Mr. [redacted] shook his head, turned around and walked out of the

office.

I believe

the lesson to be learned here is, Cheap Labor ain’t good & Good Labor ain’t

cheap. You get what you pay for. If you can’t afford the repairs on your toys,

don’t go trying to pit Repair Shop against Repair Shop to try & scam free

work! Think about what you are getting yourself into when you deny repairs suggested

by your technicians. Even more so, ask for, when requesting a discount on the

repairs being made to it. Would you tell your physician you could only pay $150

less than what he quoted you? I think not! He’s got your life in his hands.

Same is true for automotive repairs. We can only do what you authorize us to do

or not do, on your vehicles.
