Review: We rented an apartment from [redacted], through a Realty company in NY, for our son to live in while attending college in NY. We had a friend go check out the apartment before signing the lease, but she really wasn't able to tell what the neighborhood was like, other than it didn't have a lot of businesses available. We also checked the Realtor's website for crime stats in the neighborhood. The only thing it listed was muggings and petty thefts. No mention of shootings, which the neighbors say happen every few days! Within 24 hours of us being there, we witnessed a shoot out less than 20 feet from us only two blocks from the apartment. Two people were killed, although many were running for their lives and ducking behind cars on the street for safety. Thankfully a stranger on the street directed us how to get around the area and back to the apartment. We quickly came to realize that the apartment was in a drug dealer infested, extreme crime, neighborhood. We cannot allow our son to live in the middle of this extremely dangerous neighborhood. [redacted] said shootings happen every day in the city and there's nothing he can do about it. In addition, the neighborhood appears to have many shady dealings going on, and the lady that lives on the floor above where my son would have been moving into stopped us to tell us all the details of how she came to have 13 children....in great detail! No way a 19 year old kid can live alone in this neighborhood. Another neighbor told us shootings happen so often in the neighborhood they don't even put them on television anymore because it happens so often.Desired Settlement: I asked [redacted]'s brother) if they had other apartments we could move to in a different neighborhood. [redacted] said they do not. I asked if they would please cancel the contract and refund the $4,200 that the other parent and I have both paid already. Nile refused to refund the money but said if we're out by 9/* he won't "come after us" for the remaining rent. I've begged [redacted] to cancel the lease and refund our money as we now have had to find another place for our son to live.

A lease agreement was signed and entered into by all parties. The fact that the tenants were not pleased with the neighborhood is not reason for breaking a contract. I have offered to release the tenants from the lease but I cannot refund monies that were initially paid as there are many factors involved as well as time lost in re-renting the apartment.

The landlord should at least refund the security deposit, at a minimum. That's more than fair considering we were only in the apartment 11 days.
