Ron Hall Sprinklers

Review: In the Spring of 2013, I contacted Ron Hall Sprinklers to make an appointment to have them inspect and activate our sprinkler system. When I initially spoke with them, they told me that inspecting and activating the system would cost approximately $89.00, but that any repairs to the system would incur additional costs. I made an appointment to have Ron Hall Sprinklers inspect and activate our system, but expressly told them to get further authorization from me before making any repairs to the system.A serviceman from Ron Hall Sprinklers arrived at our home on 10 May 2013. I confirmed with him that he was to inspect and activate the system, but to get authorization from me before performing any repairs. He inspected our system, and told me that in addition to the inspection and activation, he thought that we needed to replace one sprinkler head and the shut-off valve located inside our house. I told the serviceman to activate our system and replace the sprinkler head, but to refrain from repairing the shut-off valve because I thought our home warranty would cover it. The serviceman then went outside and began working. He later returned, told me that the work was complete, and said that he was going to leave a part that he had removed from the system in the garage. At no point did I ever authorize any work other than inspecting the system, replacing one sprinkler head, and activating the system.About one week later, we received a bill from Ron Hall Sprinklers, which included two charges. The first for inspecting the system, and replacing the sprinkler head, and activating the system. This charge, including parts and labor, was $83.50. The second for replacing a vacuum breaker; was $239.30. We were alarmed because we had not authorized any repairs other than of the sprinkler head. I was able to get in touch with Mr. Hall on 21 May. He told me that the damaged shut-off valve had leaked, and, when the temperature fell below freezing, the water from this break froze and damaged the vacuum breaker.Desired Settlement: We did not authorize Ron Hall Sprinklers to remove, repair, or replace our vacuum breaker. I specifically told them to get authorization before doing any repairs, twiceonce before scheduling the appointment, and once during the appointment, before any work was done. That repair and replacement was done without our permission, and against our wishes, unfairly denying us the opportunity to shop around and compare pricesDESIRED SETTLEMENT DESCRIPTION:We are being billed $239.30 for the unauthorized repairs. Another local sprinkler company could have done the work for less, and we could have performed the work ourselves for much less. We think it would be fair to pay Ron Hall Sprinklers $139.00, as reimbursement for the part, but we do not think it would be fair to pay Ron Hall Sprinklers for their labor installing that part. Ron Hall Sprinklers should not be allowed to make a profit by foisting an unauthorized repair on us.
