I was given an estimate of $300 to repair/replace 92 sq ft of material in the kitchen. Turns out that they only needed to replace 20 sq ft on the day of repair. The owner says $300 regardless of how small or how big the job was. I said that wasn't clearly communicated. I clarified in a text and email several times that we would be replacing 92 sq feet for $300 and he said yes. But wants to charge me $300 for 20 sq ft. Space under the fridge and around the fridge. He told me that they don't charge by the sq ft. Then I said I want 92 sq ft of the floor replaced then if I'm paying that amount and he told me to take it up with the employee. He apparently gave the employee my job to the employee to make extra money. I was quoted to replace my entire kitchen $420, 140 sq feet by another company. Anyone can clearly see this doesn't make sense. I kept asking about a plan. If there is more damage or less. The question was answered with texts about reusing non damaged boards, refers to kitchen not fridge area which is where the damage was. Again, not clear. I was charged $25 for removing and replacing of baseboards. They removed 1 based board and it maybe 3 ft. The removal and disposal of laminate flooring charged $35. Originally thought this would be fair because again the quote was for 92 sq ft. Honestly, if you are only removing about 10 laminate boards that fee should be taken off or reduced. I can throw 10 boards away in my garbage can but your gonna charge me $35 and not fairly price it out. Installation of the laminate floor should reflect the amount of work. Charged $200 to replace $20 sq feet.I'm all for people getting their worth.I don't mind giving a little extra for great service. The owner kept saying, "Did we agree on $300 or not?" And I told him yes, with the understanding that you were replacing 92 sq feet for the repair. He kept saying,"I don't charge by sq ft." Most owners apologize for the misunderstanding and try to work with the customer. It was very cut throat.
The agreed upon price for the repair was $300. As confirmed by the homeowner. Nowhere in the estimate or contract does it mention square footage. The estimate says, “12mm - Repair damaged boards in kitchen. Customer to supply material. CHECK MATERIAL MATCH AND LOCK PRIOR TO STARTING.” After scheduling the repair twice and delays in getting confirmation back from the homeowner, we were finally able to put the customer in contact with one our subcontracted installers to schedule the repair for a Saturday (yes, we pay overtime). We get a call from the homeowner Saturday morning saying she does not want to pay the full amount. It seems that she felt that the repair was completed too quickly or wasn't as difficult as she thought. Bottom line is that the repair was completed as promised yet she didn't want to pay the agreed upon amount. Again, it seems that she doesn't have a handle on what all is involved in coordinating this type of work. Initial estimate 1+ hours drive time and fuel, numerous conversation and scheduling conflicts, weekend over time work, drive time to and from job site, fuel, auto insurance, liability insurance, workmans comp, supplies and 3+ hours of repair time. She also made a complaint to the Revdex.com stating what she thought a fair price for the repair should be, “Desired Settlement: I would like to be refunded an amount that's fair. Whether it's a refund for the disposal and installation for 1 or an adjustment to the original quote based on the actual sq ft that was installed. It would be about $2.17 (basic division) for installation so if only 20 sq ft was installed, basically the area under a fridge and a little beyond that.” So it appears that she thinks that a professional flooring installer is going to come out to her house on a Saturdayand work for nearly 4 hours for $43.40. Again, the $300 price for the repair was clearly stated in the estimate and agreed upon by both parties and both parties agree that the repair was completed as promised. I have built a reputation and solid 5 star reviews over the years by providing quality work for a fair price. It is not right that someone can post a unkind review when all we have done is stand our ground when a customer tries to renegotiate the agreed upon price after the work has been completed. Please let me know if you would like a copy of the estimate and contract.
I am rejecting this response because:the owner subcontracted the job without telling me it was being subcontracted, did not explain charges in the detail he listed in response, did not tell me Saturday is considered over time, and I asked a few times to clarify information on the contract. I asked what if...questions regarding repair to find out if there was a price difference.
the owner could have apologized for the misunderstanding and Not being transparent. Clearly my fault for going with this contractor and asked for a more detailed contract.
when I questioned the price and sq ft that was agreed on he told me to take it up with the guy (subcontractor) or pay him and he will just pay the guy. Not professional in my eyes. Lesson learned.
