Review: I work for a small non-profit child care resource and referral agency. We help parents find child care and provide training and technical assistance for child care providers.We were tenants at [redacted] for 6 years - two 3-year leases. We moved to a new location at the end of October, when our second lease expired. Our unit was about 1000 square feet.The landlord, [redacted], refuses to return our $1000 security deposit. He claims that because we painted some walls a medium or dark green or brown, it will require more than one coat of paint to cover them, and he's keeping the money to pay for applying the additional coat.When we moved in we accepted the unit "as is", and it was pretty awful. There were no white or light-colored walls, they were painted a dark orange or purple. Even the bathroom was orange. We painted all of the walls, and they all needed a coat of good primer and then a coat of paint. When we moved out, about half the wall were white and about half were a color that yes - will probably require more than one coat of paint.This does not justify keeping our security deposit. If we had left the walls as we found them we would not be expected to pay for them to be painted for the next tenant. Our lease said that we would be responsible for repairs - which we did take care of - but there is nothing that said we had to paint the unit before we moved out. We were exemplary tenants during our 6 years there and paid the rent on time each month. I'm very disappointed in [redacted] behavior and it looks like I will have to take this to small claims court.The conversations regarding this issue are all in saved emails.Desired Settlement: We expect to receive our $1000 security deposit in full.
