Customer was told when he dropped unit off that it will be a $30.00 charge for us to look at unit and give him an estimate and that any other work done after that will be an extra cost. We did not specify that the unit will be...

apart if repair was not performed at time of pick up. Reason being we did not know what the problem was the unit. The unit had to be taken apart in order to find that there was a problem within the engine itself, we ordered a couple of parts to test unit and found out that the engine needs a new piston/cylinder assembly, valves and push rods due to all the carbon build up that the unit had inside, not visible from outside. Pictures show the carbon buildup and the grayish motor oil due to metal shavings that wore off piston/cylinder. We gave the customer an estimate of $600 for the repair. We do not put units back together because if customer decides that he wants them repaired we would have to spend more time taking it apart again, and also unit will not work if put back together and again it is extra work that was performed after the estimate. We have been doing it this way for over 40 years and any other small engine shop in our area does it the same way. Customer said that we should have told him in the beginning that the unit was going to be apart but we couldn't because we did not know the problem of the unit, but we told him that we will take into consideration his feedback. Then the customer agreed to pays us the $30 so we could put the unit back together, and we did.

Review: I took my generator for service to van sant equipment I was told to check the problem and give estimate for repair I need to pay $30 which was fine with me so I left my generator and payed service charge. After about 6 weeks I stopped by their shop to check status of my equipment because no one contacted me for 6 weeks. I was told that it would cost me $600 to repair it so I had to think about it maybe it wouldn't pay to fix it. After another month path by I stopped by to pick up my generator which I didn't wanted to fix because it was too expensive the store representative brings out a carton box with my generator fully dissembled in it. When I took it to the shop it was ASSEMBLED. So the guy tells me that to put it together I need to pay more. When I came in the beginning they never say that it would cost more for estimate and when I came the second time to check on it no one told me thats its apart and I need to pay to pay to put it back together but when I came to pick it up it was bunch of parts in a box and he wants money to put them together they need to tell this to the customer in the beginning so we can decide if we want their service for that price.Desired Settlement: I think I need to get my generator back the same way like I dropped it off ASSEMBLED and I don't have to pay extra to put it together because they didn't specify it in the beginning.
