They quoted me $150 for work, then charged me $290. They will not return my bike nor parts.In February, I went to Victory Bicycle Studio to have some work done on an older road bike. I brought in new wheels, which I wanted put on the bike, along with new handlebars (and cork tape for the new bars), new gears, new brakes, tires and inner-tubes. I was hoping to have the work completed for around $300.In our initial conversation, I was told that $500 dollars was a more reasonable cost for the work I was asking for, and I agreed to that price. After a few days, they called me back and let me know that the wheels I brought in would not fit my bike, and that it would not be possible to put together the configuration I wanted together on my older frame. At this time, I decided that I would try to get one more year out of the old bike, then upgrade the following year. I asked if I could buy new wheels for the bike so that it could comfortable get through another summer of riding. I was told that they could do this for ($150 walking out the door. I agreed to that price.A week later, I was called and told my bike was ready for pickup, the cost was $290:"A breakdown of your ticket is as follows: $80 tune-up $80 wheelset $20 [redacted] bar tape $60 Set of tires $12 Set of tubes $10 2 cables $8 - 4ft of housing+ good ol' sales tax."I asked how the cost was not the $150 we agreed on, and was told, "we kept it under the $500 you wanted to spend". I have refused to pay the $290, since it was not the amount we agreed on for the work that was done.When I called back to ask about the details of the higher price, I talked to the tech who worked on the bike, and he said he used to have the same bike, and loved it, but if I wanted to upgrade that old bike, I would be throwing money away. The best course of action would be for me to buy a new bike. I took his advice and have purchased a new bike from another bicycle shop.I have had an ongoing email conversation through[redacted], which I will copy at the end of this document. In this I have offered to let them have the bike if they can sell it for the amount owed for the work. I just want back the wheels I brought in (I had purchased from a different vendor) since they were not on the bike. I also wanted my seat and pedals, and I was willing to swap them out for a different seat and pedals, since I was fond of the ones on my bike. I think the value of those three items are: wheels - $100, Pedals - $50, and seat - $30. They agreed that the bike cannot be sold for the amount they are charging me. They have said that they will keep all of my parts and bike, and charge me $10 a day for storage until their expenses are equal to the amount owed. I immediately offered to store the bike while we ironed out the details at no charge. I do not want the bike. I just want my parts. At this point Victory Bicycle has my bike, and all my parts, and will no longer respond to email.I have a detailed email conversation with them via [redacted] I can forward for additional detail that confirms the above to be true.Desired Settlementreturn my wheels (not the ones on the bike), and swap out the pedals and seat before they sell it. I have agreed to let them have the bike. They agree that they cannot sell it for the value of work they have put into the bike, therefor they are keeping additional property of mine as well. I want my parts ($180 value) returned, and they can keep the bike.
