VIP Heat and A/C Reviews (2)

Review: [redacted] from VIP Heat & A/C gave me an estimate to install central air in my house. I have radiators, so ductwork also needed to be installed. He gave me an estimate for two options. Option 1 was a 2.5 ton system with an attic fan. Option 2 was a 3 ton system, which wouldnt require the attic fan but would use more electricity & would cost more up front. So [redacted] recommended the 2.5 ton system with the attic fan. Soon after the installation, I contacted [redacted] & told him the system was taking hours to reduce the temperature by just 1 or 2 degrees, even when the outside temperature was only in the upper 70s. Some days it ran from 9:30am to 9:30pm when the outside temperature was in the mid 80s (and the thermostat was set at 76). He came back and installed additional outlets (at an additional cost), which didnt help. According to [redacted], the maximum number of outlets was already reached, and adding more doesnt add BTUs. [redacted] came back and checked everything out. He said the system was performing appropriately. Then he asked me when I had the ridge vent installed in my roof. I told him it was there since before I purchased the house. He said he didnt notice it when he made his recommendation for the 2.5 ton system and the attic fan. He told me the attic fan wouldnt work properly with a ridge vent. It wont allow the air to circulate from the eves and therefore wouldnt cool the attic properly, which in turn causes the A/C to struggle to cool the house. He even mailed printouts to me from the website of the attic fan maker, which detailed the information he was telling me. His recommendation was to have the ridge vent blocked from the inside to solve the problem. So I asked him when he could come over and block the ridge vents. He insisted that it wasnt his responsibility since he subcontracted out the installation of the attic fan, even though he was the HVAC professional who recommend a 2.5 ton system with an attic fan, and he was the one who installed a 2.5 ton system.Desired Settlement: Ive had 2 other HVAC service representatives out, who each did a load calculation (which [redacted] didnt do) only to find out the system is undersized. At this point, I don't believe the A/C is sized correctly. Therefore, rather than having the ridge vents blocked, I'd like to have the system replaced with a 3 ton system. I offered to pay [redacted] for his cost difference between the 2.5 ton and 3 ton systems, but I don't believe it would be fair for me to have to pay for any additional labor.

Response:

I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to complaint ID [redacted], and have determined that this does not resolve my complaint. For your reference, details of the offer I reviewed appear below.

[redacted] gave me two estimates. One for a 3 ton unit and one for a 2.5 ton unit, which he told me would require an attic fan (but he wouldn't install the fan, he would refer me to a roofer, which he did). He suggested the second option because it would cost less up front and on an ongoing basis. I never stated that I didn't like the price as [redacted] described. Giving the "expert's" opinion much weight, I heeded the "expert's" advice and had the 2.5 ton unit installed (with an attic fan). Although [redacted] mentions in his comments that the unit maintains a temperature of 75F, it certainly does not, that is precisely much of my complaint. I would be quite pleased if the system would maintain a temperature of 75F. I have estimates from two HVAC professionals to change out the unit because, in their professional opinion, the unit is undersized. This is simply a case of an "expert" ([redacted]) that undersized a central air conditioner.
