Review: On Sunday 9/8/13 I purchased a seedless watermelon from the Weis Market in [redacted], PA. The next evening I came home from work to find a sticky mess on my kitchen table, chairs and floor. The watermelon was on top of the table and in less than 24 hours completely liquidized and leaked out all over the table and 3 of the upholstered chairs! I’ve never seen anything like this in my life however was informed from the managers at Weis that "it sometimes happens". After research online I found out that there is a disease that can affect watermelons called Bacterial Fruit Blotch which is an "Infection does not penetrate the rind, but eventually causes it to crack and often emit white foam, caused by gases formed by invading pathogens." My table's finish is now ruined and the table seam is now buckled from the water damage. The cream colored upholstery on the chairs are ruined, and even after using upholstery cleaner, it is stained permanently (my husband owns a cleaning company and could not get the stains out with the commercial cleaners either!). I do have several pictures of the watermelon and damages for your review and can send them to you at your request. I had submitted a compliant on Weis' website but received no response. I eventually called the store and spoke to the store managers there, who were very understanding and apologetic, one even asking if I knew the cost of my table so that he had an idea of "what we'd be liable for" (I paid approximately $1000 for the set). They sent out an independent appraiser through their insurance company. The man was rude and very unprofessional, throwing my belongings around my kitchen and even after acknowledging that he had never appraised anything for damage done by a watermelon, determined that the claim would be denied. I can tell you that as a college graduate with a master's degree and a wife of a business owner, I have no reason to lie or fabricate my claims that the damage to my table was done by the watermelon. As of today, 10/10/13 I have received no compensation or resolution for the damages and the situation.Desired Settlement: I was verbally informed by management at the store that Weis would take responsibility in replacing the damage caused by my table, this was not done. They sold me a bad product which caused other damages and I have not been compensated.

October 28,2013 [redacted]:I am responding to [redacted]'s complaint, conveyed through the Revdex.com, regarding her allegations regarding household damage caused by an exploding watermelon, purchased at Weis Markets. In response to her complaint, we sent an insurance representative to **. [redacted]'s home on September 13 to obtain details of this incident and confirm the damage to her dining room table and chairs. To this end, the adjustor found:• White spots on the table caused by a hot pan or dish placed on the table without any protection underneath.• No signs of leak damage on the table's underside.• A warped center joint consistent with long-term deterioration rather than an exploding watermelon• Dining room chairs with stains caused by a dark liquid rather than watermelon juice, which is clear,It is also important to note that while **. [redacted] was able to provide photos of the watermelon in her sink, she had no photos of said watermelon on her table, in addition, we rigorously inspect our produce and have received no reports regarding sub-standard watermelons.As a result of our careful review, we found no evidence supporting **. [redacted]'s claim. I have attached a copy of the adjustor's report for your review. Thank you for giving us the opportunity to respond.Sincerely,

I am rejecting this response because: the inspectors findings are not accurate. In addition he has never inspected a table that had damage caused by a watermelon. Also, the inside of a rotten watermelon is not clear it is dark colored. The center of my table was not warped before this incident it was a result of the thick sticky liquid that comes out of the dieased watermelon they sold me with their sticker in the picture that was sent to them. Further I was not compensated in any manner for this incident as a $5 watermelon has ruined my property, property I was promised by their mangers would be replaced any nothing at all has been done to resolve the situation other than send an inspector out who was rude ignorant and no knowledge of what a diseased watermelon emits when it explodes. This in an insult although I am flattered that Weis thinks I have such a vivid imagination and the time to argue this point if my claims were false.
