Wester Placer County Waste Management Reviews (1)

Review: On 10-10-2014, I picked up my mail from the post office. I received my quarterly bill from our local waste management district. Inside was a Flyer advising that on Oct 11th & 12th that the Western Placer Waste Management Authority was offering " Free Hazardous Waste Drop-Off" at the Gold County Fairgrounds in Auburn, CA between 0900 and 1500 hours each day. The Flyer made reference to checking their website, [redacted] for a listing of all items that would be accepted. I logged into their site on and checked the whole site for information, including specific information about this specific event. There was no information whatsoever about event at Gold County Fairgrounds. I search the internet for any local news or information about the event. The only things that came up where news information about past events being cancelled due to WPWMA posting incorrect dates back in 2010 and something along the same lines in 2012. My searches did not turn up any other news or info about this planned event. I work weekends. Due to having a need to dispose of several different items of Hazardous Materials, I made special last-minute arrangements to take Sunday off to gather up my items and drive to Gold Country Fairgrounds. When I arrived at the location, there was a sign advising the Waste Drop-Off had been canceled; due to the location being used as a Base Camp for a local fire issue. WPWMA had more than adequate time to post this cancellation info on their website, to help prevent people like me who wasted time, gas and, and having to take a day off to take advantage of this local event. Thank you Western Placer Waste Management Authority for wasting my time and my resource to try and help keep our communities free of improperly discarded hazardous materials. I should not have to sign up for your news letter in order to recieve info that should be posted on your website.Desired Settlement: I realize there is nothing I can do other than to complain about WPWMA's not doing ANYTHING whatsoever to advise the public at large of the cancellation. They had MORE than adaquate time to update their website of the cancellation. I would like to see the Supervisor get a week off without pay for his/her failure in this matter. Because I am sure there were many others who were impacted as well. Then maybe they would understand that time & money are important to others as well.

Response:

The Western Placer Waste Management Authority (WPWMA) sincerely apologizes for any inconvenience experienced by Mr. [redacted] or other members of the public regarding the need to reschedule the household hazardous waste (HHW) event that was scheduled at the Gold Country Fairgrounds in Auburn on October 11th and 12th. The event has been rescheduled for November 15th and 16th at the Gold Country Fairgrounds. On the morning of October 9th, the WPWMA received notification from the Gold Country Fairgrounds that the HHW event site would not be available as it had been commandeered by Cal Fire as a base camp for the Applegate Fire that started on October 8th. WPWMA staff immediately began the process of identifying alternative locations in an effort to avoid rescheduling the event. Despite these efforts, staff was unable to identify a suitable location that provided safe and sufficient access for the public and appropriate environmental controls and determined the need to reschedule the event. In an effort to notify as broad an audience as possible, the WPWMA posted event rescheduling notices via the following outlets: • Home page of the WPWMA’s website (4:45 pm on Thursday, October 9th) • [redacted] (both print and digital editions) • [redacted] page • Press release issued to Gold Country Media and [redacted] radio • WPWMA phone message • Electronic and posted signs at Auburn City Hall, Gold Country Fairgrounds and the intersection of Auburn-Folsom Blvd and Fairgate Road Included in all notices was a reminder that the WPWMA operates a permanent HHW collection facility that is free to Placer County residents and open 7 days per week. Additional information about the WPWMA’s services, including its permanent HHW facility, can be found at [redacted].
