On March 16th 2020 the mesabi ymca announced they would be closed until the end of March due to covid 19. Towards the end of March it was announced they would stay closed until the state government allowed them to open back up. I called repeatedly about canceling my membership and received no answer or return phone call. On April 5th I was charged for another month of membership even though I have no access to the facilities as they are shut down. I was finally able to get ahold of an employee in member services through email and I was told they will not give me a refund because I did not cancel before the 15th of March and that is their policy. When it was announced that they would not be open in April it was already after March 15th, therefore it would have been impossible for me to cancel my membership before that date. So I am being charged $65 for a months membership to a facility that is closed and I have no access to. I also emailed the CVO and CEO (twice) using their contact information I was given and have received no reply.
Hello, this is Chad ***, CEO of the Mesabi Family YMCA
*** was contacted within 24 hours by our Membership Director after receiving his email. He stated that there was a two week delay, but after researching phone records, voicemail records, and email records, no contact was found with the current email address we have been communicating with or on file with his membership. The issue was brought to the CEO's attention, reviewed by the Board of Directors and a response was made as quickly as possible. With the current COVID-19 Shelter in Place order; the entire interchange from beginning to end was done within 72 hours. An email was sent by the CEO to *** explaining the situation and that his cancellation request would be approved after confirmation of the required cancellation form per policy. We have on file his signature and acknowledgment of the cancellation policy by the 15th of each month for the billing to be processed in time with the members bank and/or credit card company. We understand there is no precedent to work from in this scenario where government has mandated that we cannot open our doors until further notice; dates that seem to change weekly. It is our policy that we do not change a membership status without their written consent. To cancel all membership automatically by our choice would spell a practical business decision financially as it would be disastrous; 2195 members and *** is only one of two requested refunds. We will honor any request from a member for refunding monthly dues if requested. *** refund is currently being processed on 04/08/2020.

Revdex.com: I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to complaint ID, and find that this resolution is satisfactory to me even though Chad *** the CEO was not fully truthful. I did try calling for up to 2 weeks before I emailed Kaylee ***. If they do not have records of that then I suggest they start taking more care in their record keeping. I have attached screen shots of some of my phone record showing I called the number they have listed as proof. Also, it took almost 2 full days to receive a reply from chad and I think the only reason I received a reply was because I had filed a complaint with the Revdex.com. I believe the YMCA was very unprofessional in this whole situation and even though I am receiving my refund I will never again be a member of their gym nor will I suggest anyone else is.
