The customer came in on 9/10 saying his vehicle was shaking very badly and wanted us to look at it. The customer left the vehicle to be picked up later. We checked out the vehicle and let him know that his front right tire was badly worn with wires exposed and that there was a large bulge that...

was causing the shaking. We spoke over the phone and he said he would like to get two new tires. I let the customer know that we would have to order tires for him that would come in next day because we did not have anything in stock. Customer agreed that was fine.We gave the customer options for tires we could get for him. He settled on two 225/70R15 General Altimax RT tires. I told him that if he bought four, General was offering a $50 prepaid credit card with a mail in rebate. The customer declined because he said two of his tires were fairly new.The customer requested to pick up the vehicle but I warned him that it was very dangerous to drive with the tire in that condition. I told him that I would put his spare on free of charge since he was purchasing tires from us. We put the spare on the front right where the bad tire was, but since the tread on the spare tire was far more aggressive than the one on the left side, it pulled very hard to the right. I let the customer know that I would put the spare on the rear so that he would be able to drive it homecThe customer dropped the vehicle off the following morning. The tires came in and we put them on the rims. Since we already had to take off the spare on the rear, I asked the customer if he would like us to put the new tires in the rear free of charge since it was a rear wheel drive car. The customer agreed that they should be put in the rear. The customer then asked about why the front tires were wearing uneven. We checked the front end out and everything checked out. I let him know that he would likely just need a front end alignment but that we don't  have a machine to perform that job. We did get a discount at a near by business that normally offers alignments for $79.95 but only charges us $49.95. He asked that we take it there. In total we rotated his tires, mounted and balance two tires, and drove the vehicle to another location for only $40 and saved him $30 on an alignment. We also sold him tires at cost. The tires he purchased retail on tirerack.com at $187.04 with shipping. They cost him only $162.76 with shipping through us. His total bill with us was $252.71 before tax. If the customer were to have done this work himself, he would have paid $266.99 before tax. I believe that we were extremely fair with this customer considering the fact that he would have never been able to do this work cheaper even if he did it himself. We even did extra work at no extra charge. As far as his valve stem going bad, we check all tires and valve stems for leaks after we install a new tire. His tire did not leak in any way. There was no reason for us to believe that his valve stem would go bad and if we put on new valve stems at that price with every set of new tires, we would no longer be in business.
