The pieces of furniture I make, are made our of real kiln dried woodThey are stained/painted to the clients specification and then sealed for indoor useOnce a piece is done, I send pick up address and instructionsThese instructions include the
supplies or items needed to secure and cover the pieces to protect them on the trip home*** purchased a bed frame and night stand set, when her pieces were ready I contacted her to arrange pick up, I mentioned to her separate times that a tarp/s were required as it was pouring (not just a rain we actually got inches of rain that weekend) and that the pieces were NOT sealed for outdoor weather and useshe acknowledged my pick up instructionsWhen they arrived to pick up their pieces, I asked if they had a tarp to cover them to protect them from the weatherShe said they did NOT bring the tarps despite me telling them it was required times, but that they brought something elseThey brought an army issued poncho the size for an adult to useThey aren't actually water proof and that wouldn't have covered even a third of the piece*** actually laughed it off and said she wasn't worried about them being wet as "there was no reason to stress over it now". When *** contacted me about the issue, I advised her not to use the bed as it was not safe with the side rails as they wereI didn't need to see the bed first handI make furniture for a living, working with wood and being knowledgeable about what it can and cannot do, is apart of my jobI knew as soon as they left there would be an issue with this bed as it was completely soaked throughout (not just the surface), and actually messaged a friend about it minutes after they left from the pick up (that message will also be attached) I explained to her that when wood gets wet like that, it has to dry from the inside out and that wiping it off and it being dry to touch (as she said in her message to me and the complaint) didn't mean the bed was actually dryThe wood could not have been to 'green' as she claims as I used kiln dried wood for all my piecesKiln dried means that the wood is actually dried thoroughly at the wood mill before it's shipped to lumber yards/stores, this process takes between 1-yearsThe screws used in on the side rails/metal plates are 3/8" hex head screws and are more than efficient as they are not weight baringThe weight of the bed/people is actually held by the 1/2" bolts and 3/8" wood anchors that are placed INSIDE the headboard and footboard bed postsOut of the nearly beds I've built in the last months, the method in which I built them have never had an issue and have upheld amazinglyNot a single client who has purchased a bed, aside from ***, has had an issue with the bed, the hardware not holding up or being efficient enough to hold the weight properly, and none of the other beds have been exposed to the elements and rain as ***'s hasI was more than happy to re-make the side rails for themI am very flexible with my clients, and was with *** as well by making her piece weeks earlier than her completion date in order to accommodate her scheduleFor example; one wouldn't go to a furniture store or *** and put a piece of furniture in their vehicle in the pouring rain and leave it uncovered regardless of how long the trip was and expect no damage to come from itI feel this is the same situation. Because I gave explicit pick up instructions for my pieces numerous times and they were disregarded by the client, I felt that by offering to re-make the side rails at cost to me (meaning they were not being charged for any of the labor going back into them, just the supplies at a cost of $50), was a happy medium resolution for all parties involvedI did not offer to pick them up or re-make them for free because of the fact that the issue was not caused by negligence on my part, and the instructions I gave, if followed, would have eliminated this issue altogetherEach piece is artisan crafted by handI spend a meticulous amount of hours on each piece to ensure all of furniture is of quality and will last my clients
