5 Star Pet Services Reviews (%countItem)

On Sunday, November 24, 2019, 5 Star Pet Services was engaged to provide pet sitting services for our dog, ***, during the Thanksgiving holiday. The sitter *** Neesmith came to our home and received explicit instructions regarding the care for the dog, including instructions to keep the dog's collar on at all times when outside. On Thursday, November 28, at 1:11 a.m., my wife Laurie received a text message from Neesmith stating that the dog was unable to be found and "She's not coming back." The dog is now missing under Neesmith's watch. When contacted the next morning at 6:37 a.m., Neesmith stated that she still did not know where the dog was, and did not have an explanation for her disappearance. At 11:09 a.m., via text to ***, Neesmith confirmed that the dog "didn't have her collar on," according to neighbors. In our opinion, this shows a lack of responsibility on Neesmith's part in the care of the dog. Conversation via text continued until 1:11 p.m on the 28th. At 5:52 p.m., Neesmith stated that she "had to do some dog walks but I'm coming back." According to her text, the search for the dog was suspended for approximately five and a half hours. Texts continue and at 9:46 p.m., Neesmith confirms that she is done searching for the day, as she has "looked all over the place I'm exhausted and am heading to my overnight please text me if there's an update or a sighting and I'll head there right away." Along with my two older children, we traveled from Alabama back to North Carolina over night on the 28th. The morning of the 29th, the dog returned to the home with extensive injuries - all on Neesmith's watch and due to her negligence. MY wife and two younger children rented a car from Georgia and drove home to be reunited with the dog. Over the next two weeks, the dog visited *** Animal Hospital in Harrisburg for medical treatment. The dog is home now, but has medical issues that require ongoing veterinary care. The dog's quality of life has been sincerely diminished.

Desired Outcome

Other (requires explanation) On Saturday, November 29th at 12:24 p.m., Neesmith's mother called and offered to pay "all" of the medical bills incurred in the care of the dog, in exchange for not sharing our experience publicly. We texted and agreed to this outcome. In subsequent texts, *** Neesmith offered to only pay half of the bills as this was a "freak accident." On Thursday, January 2nd, we again made contact to resolute, with no response. We are asking for payment for all medical care, and related travel expenses.

5 Star Pet Services Response • Jan 13, 2020

I received no information about *** needing an invisible collar (I will attach email information ) I was told to put her out with her collar which I did , her pink collar with all her info on them so it being late at night I assumed the yard was fixed in . I tried contacting the normans and they were pretty much nonchalant about it and I searched for her for hours . I did not get paid up front for the care of *** . I offered to pay Part of *** vet bill bc I was not informed of the collar , I talked to dr *** at *** and he expected *** to make a successful recovery , within a week the ***'s were on another vacation and there were pictures of *** at camp happy *** playing around with no issues . I'm profoundly deaf I'm not even sure what my mom called and said as she has no involvement during this case except saw me in complete panic as this was on thanksgiving .

I spoke with neighbors and they informed me this was not the first time the *** have lost their dog due to negligence.

My mom has is an elderly woman, retired and had got constant harassment from the *** . I offered from the beginning to pay half but the *** wouldn't budge . I'm on limited income and did the best I could , see below where *** is doing just fine , escaped again at a different time on another watch , is at camp happy bound and I have more screenshots if you need it

Customer Response • Jan 13, 2020

(The consumer indicated he/she DID NOT accept the response from the business.)
This response saddens and disappoints us, but honestly, is not surprising.

*** was hired based on her experience and clients in our neighborhood. No matter *** personality traits, *** accepted responsibility for her care. However, she failed in her attempt to keep the dog safe.

***'s reliance on hearsay, imagined facts (supposed conversations with "neighbors"), and her continued notice of her supposed financial situation, plays no bearing on this situation. The fact of the matter is *** and her business were negligent in the care of the dog, and she continues to take no responsibility for her actions. Unfortunately, ***'s response is based on hearsay and unsubstantiated information, and not on the facts of the situation. This is consistent with her approach to this matter.

Below, we provide additional information in regards to the situation for the consideration of the Revdex.com:

*** was informed at a live meeting with *** that the collar was required to be on the dog to be outside. She acknowledged this to *** that she understood. With her supposed experience watching dogs, she should understand the need for ALL pets to be secured for going outside. We still have never received firm information about how the dog was released from the home. She continues to refuse to provide this information, and inherenly, has shown a pattern of dishonesty to us in her business dealings.

In her response on 1/13/20, she states that "I was told to put her out with her collar which I did." On a text to *** on 11/28/19, *** states "If I had double checked her to see if her collar was on this wouldn't be happening." Therefore, the 1/13/20 response she provided is inaccurate and patently false. (See attached file for information).

As for her claim around contact, she may have looked for several hours, but per her texts and the original statement we provided, she was actually the one who suspended the search to provide care for other animals. We returned from a trip to Alabama, as well as rented a car to drive home, all at our own costs, to recover the dog. As for additional statements, ***'s physical abilities as well as her financial situation have no bearing on the negligent care she provided for the dog. Per the previous statement, we were responsible for finding the dog - not her.

As for the "constant harassment" of ***'s mother, it should be noted that her mother *** initiated contact and called *** on 11/29/2019 and left a VM of 1:54 in length. In the voicemail (attached below), *** also states that she will cover all of the dog's medical bills in exchange for not "slander(ing)" her daughter. She has only been copied on texts to *** referring to this matter and her offer. The "constant harassment" is again, unfortunately, one more of ***'s fabrications. Phone records can be provided to substantiate this point.

Of note in the voice mail, where she says she understands that "*** may have been in a fight with another dog." This was new information to us, and infers that *** may have allowed *** to be attacked by one of her own animals. In fact, in speaking with representatives of *** Animal Hospital, *** brought in a dog two days after *** was injured that was in a fight. After seeing *** and the other dog in ***'s care, it was wondered if *** brought a dog to our home that fought our own dog. We cannot substantiate this fact, but it certainly is coincidence.

As for her statement that she "offered to pay Part (sic) of ***'s vet bill bc I was not informed of the collar," we offered to settle the matter with her for $400 via text on 1/2/20, at 12:01 PM. Neither *** nor her mother responded to the text. We would consider the matter settled with a full public apology for her negligence, as well as either check or cash for $400. Any other outcome would be unsatisfactory.

We have now retained the services of counsel, and are prepared to take the matter to Cabarrus County District Court, if needed. This is not the outcome we would prefer (hence our offer), but must be ready to take this step to protect other consumers from her negligence.
