Revdex.com Regarding:
margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;"> Case #*** Dear Revdex.com:
The customer brought his vehicle to our repair shop on May 10, with a complaint of a severe oil leakUpon inspection of the vehicle we found that there was a severe leak coming from the drain plugThe threads in the oil pan where the drain plug is installed had been previously repaired with a helicoil insert by another repair shopAfter explaining to the customer how our facility repairs oil pan leaks the customer gave consent to perform the repair We use a one-piece solid drain plug specially made for this type of repairThe process involves drilling the existing hole to a slightly larger size and tapping new threads in the pan to accept the specially made drain plugAfter the repair is completed and the new drain plug installed, oil is then added back into the pan through the oil fill portThe area around the drain plug is cleaned and dried then the vehicle is started and runs for minutes while being monitored for any signs of leakage. No leaks were detectedOil level is checked before releasing vehicle to customer Over a month later the customer contacted our facility to report a leak that appeared to be coming from the drain plug Customer was asked to bring the vehicle to our facility to be evaluated, but the customer never returned The customer arrived at our repair shop on November 1, with the oil pan for our Service Manager to inspect both the oil pan and the oil drain plug Upon inspection the Service Manager asked customer where the sealing gasket was for the oil plug and customer stated he threw it away When asked why, the customer had no explanation The Service Manager installed a sealing gasket on the original drain plug and tightened to the proper specifications then filled the oil pan with hot water and allowed it to sit for minutes The customer and the Service Manager both inspected the oil pan drain plug and saw that there were no leaks coming from the drain plug No leak ever occurred The customer indicated that he had performed two oil changes after leaving our facilityHe changed the oil in his vehicle the same day the repairs were completed then again after driving 4,miles He admitted to torquing the drain plug by using a torque wrench set to foot pounds when specifications only call for foot pounds This would have distorted the sealing gasket making it almost useless for its original purpose Customer is of the opinion that the water test is not accurate for testing the seal, when in fact water is thinner than oil and makes an excellent test liquid
If the oil plug we installed was leaking when the customer left our facility he would have called back immediately or within a couple of daysInstead we received no communication from the customer for over a month and many thousands of miles during which time he changed the oil himself at least two times He also admitted he never checked the oil level to see if the vehicle had lost any oil and could not tell visually if he had a leak because the underside of his car was a mess from the original oil leakWe have performed this same repair on many vehicles with aluminum oil pans and have never had a complaint or leakThe equipment used for this repair is designed only for this repair and is highly accurate
