A 1 Best Roofing Reviews (%countItem)

This was my first time working with a contractor so there was a definite learning curve.
November - December 2019 - It had come to our attention that our roof, fence, and kitchen ceiling had sustained damages from tornadoes and hail. I found A1 Best Roofing on Angie's List. The owner, Dave ***, agreed to come out and give an estimate. As well, our claims adjuster came out and confirmed that work was needed. Based on his top rating, I decided to hire A1 to fix my roof. When I asked Dave how much the job would cost, he asked if it would be covered by insurance. After Dave left, he sent me a text stating that work could be done under budget (within the insurance check amount). When I asked about the terms of the warranty, he said that the roof, fence, and kitchen would be covered for ten years. What I didn't know was that he was supposed to give me a written estimate on how much everything would cost. I received an additional text stating that he could do everything for the amount of the insurance check plus deductible. His team began working on the roof a few weeks before Christmas and it was completed in less than two weeks due to weather.
February 13th- April 2020 - Seeing that the roof was satisfactory, the fence crew (different from the roof crew) began work on the fence. Though weather and other jobs played a factor, the crew wasn't consistent in showing up. One of the guys complained that Dave would often take new jobs knowing that previous customer jobs were not completed. Dave himself started working on the fence after witnessing that the fence crew wasn't showing up and doing poor work. Finally, he texted me and admitted that the fence crew didn't know what they were doing and asked if he could make things right (he even asked again in front of my neighbors). This was two months after I had asked Dave several times to get another crew. His answer was that he was waiting on a second crew to finish work for another company. I asked him why he didn't he just wait until the second crew completed the job (since he said they were a better crew). He stated that he didn't want to prolong our job any longer. By this time, both of our neighbors (on either side of us and with whom we share a fence) are also affected and unhappy with the delays and shoddy workmanship.
April - May, 2020 - Dave's new foreman arrived to take over the fence/dog run project. He assured me that he would be able to fix our issues. One of my immediate issues was sagging/uneven gate doors (the entrances to the backyard and dog run). After about 2 to 3 weeks, the crew had stopped showing up. This was alarming because the job was clearly not done.
Upon closer observation I noticed:
â?¢ Uneven stain application
â?¢ Broken or split pickets
â?¢ Screws sticking through the pickets or screws missing altogether
â?¢ Portions of the fence missing materials
â?¢ Crumbling of split 2x4s
â?¢ Screws all over the yard (An endangerment to our pets if swallowed)
â?¢ Warping wood
â?¢ The two entry gates that were attempted to be "fixed" still did not close properly (this is after I had asked the new crew to alter the brackets to better support the sagging gate doors)
I called Dave multiple times but he never returned or answered my calls. When he did, he told me that the new crew said they were finished and wouldn't be coming back. Dave stated that they didn't feel respected which was a new development for me. I asked Dave what was he talking about and all he could say was they didn't want to come back and that they were finished. I asked Dave to come and look at the work himself but he refused. I asked him to set up a conference call with foreman so that we could clear up any perceived misunderstandings and he refused to do that as well.
By late April, Dave text me saying he "wanted to make things right." He got another crew. Again, I invited him out to view the work and he informed me that he was not coming back out. He asked me to pay for the fence, because I had only paid for the roof. After I said no, he threatened to sue me. I told him that I have an invoice signed by him (in February) showing that I already paid for the roof and the fence. Then, he wanted money for the materials that his crew destroyed. Again, my answer is no. "Why would I pay you for the materials your guys destroyed? That would be like me taking my car to your shop, you damaging it, and then charge me for it."
May - June 2020, I had two different fence companies inspect the fence. Both companies stated that the entire fence would need to come down and be rebuilt. After showing me samples, they informed me that my fence was not cedar wood but green wood (I was led to believe by Dave that the fence was made from cedar wood). They told me the fence would start coming down within two to three years. When I finally got a hold of Dave and told him this, he said that he knew the treated wood on my fence would warp over time due to the elements and screws would come out. He also stated that he was basically "done" with us. When asked about the warranty, he denied ever saying that the fence had a warranty and I could find that on his website. As of May 30, 2020, it is not listed on his site.
Because Dave spoke highly about his Christian values and his A+ rating on Angie's List, I trusted him. Before money changed hands, he always answered the phone and people were on time. Once he was given the money, Dave eventually stopped responding. He offered discounts upon referrals, which we did. However, when they had a consultation with him, they complained of being pressured (One neighbor said that Dave told him he needed a new roof. After two different roofing companies reviewed his roof, they stated that he didn't need a new one).
Dave was given every opportunity to resolve the fence project. He refused. Now, I will have to find another company to redo my entire fence.

This report is clearly missing the facts, The insurance scope payed to have the roof replaced with the same type of shingle, 15# felt paper, and basic ventilation for the attic. They also included some interior ceiling repair and a few fence pickets to be replaced.
We replaced the basic shingles with Owens Corning Lifetime Warranty, 130MPH wind rated High Definition deluxe shingles, synthetic underlayment, Ice and water underlayment in the valleys, Superior ridge cap, ridge vents all at no extra charge to the customer.

The customer asked if we could help him install a better fence because the old one was inferior, worn out, and in bad shape. I told him, let us file some supplements with the insurance for a few things that we encountered while installing the roof: having to hand load the shingles, limited dump trailer access, demolition crew rates instead of skilled labor rates, etc and let's see if we can get enough money to pay for a new fence. He then requested for us to build an extra fence for a "dog run" for his military trained german shepherd.

He also stated his neighbors would help pay for their parts of the fence.

After starting the fence project, the customer did not like how we had the back fence faced with the better side facing in and wanted turned around the other direction. He also did not want us to access his back yard via his own driveway, so we had to remove pickets every day from the back fence since it faced an open lot. So we had to remove and re-install pickets every day to work on the fence. Then he wanted the fence to be eight feet tall instead of the six foot height it currently was after the work was started. So we trued to modify the fence, only to realize the posts that were already in use were not properly installed in enough concrete. So we had to add taller posts in concrete, reinforce them with the other posts, double the brackets, etc.

The the customer wanted the front fence modified to be taller in order to hide his shed from view. Then there was the problem with the water drainage that flooded his yard every time it rained and he needed the water to flow out of one exit area but not be too big for his other smaller dog to get out.

Then he did not like our guys to be working in the area when he needed to walk his dog, he wanted every picket to be faced a certain way, exactly 1/8th of an inch spacing, after the pickets were installed and after the sun had dried the wood and they had warped some.

All the while, after the emotional beratements to us and his wife, demonstrations of how he could punch his boxing dummy to the ground and after asking him to go over the extra financial expense all his modifications were costing, we were getting a little concerned. So when I brought up the financial concerns, he expressed his opinion that now somehow, our company owed him money.
He wanted ne to show him all of our financial expenses, material costs, labor costs, etc.

I sent a second crew out to go over all of his concerns, after asking him numerous times of what he wanted, all of the items completed, as they loaded up their equipment and as it was starting to rain, the customer came running out to their vehicle and demanded they get back out and add some more fence rails on one side because his yard had a hill and he wanted the fence rails to all look perfect in spite of the angle of the yard. . . .

After realizing this customer would never be happy, after realizing I would never get our money that he proved it when he said that we owed him money, after all the nonsense, it had to stop.

I told the customer that all he had to pay us was for the material and there would be no labor charges. He exploded and refused. So I told him we were not coming back and since he could not be satisfied, there would be No charge. Period. After we were out multiple hundreds and hundreds of dollars, He was out Nothing. No cost. Then he even accused us of not using real cedar wood for the fence. Our receipts prove otherwise.

If you are going to tell the story, tell the whole story. Your crew had been working on my fence from February 13th to April 23th. It doesn't take that long to build a fence. Four different companies told me it would take no more a week to two weeks to complete depending on the complexity of the chosen design. Your roof crew left a sloppy work area. I have pictures which you are well aware. YOU docked your crew because of it. All in all, the roof seems to be fine. No problem there. The problem is the fence and how you handled the situation. The original fence was in the same condition as the one you put up. Again, I have pictures. Let me go line for line addressing your statements. When it comes to the insurance, you told me that they fell well short of the money they were supposed to give me. You wanted to see how you could pump more money out of them. Not knowing how the process works at the time, I trusted you because of your stated *** values and the conversations. It's amazing that even at this point, you still don't want to take ownership of the poor performance and lack of experience that you and your crew have in fence building. The fence is not okay. You and I had long conversations about what I wanted my fence to look like in detail. We covered in detail the look, height and design. Since you are the expert, I trusted you when you said everything I wanted could be done. You spoke with high confidence in your crew that they could build the fence that I wanted and within budget. You wrote this information down on the invoice, not to mention texted it to me. I told you from the beginning that I wanted the poles on the inside and the smooth side on the outside. You made the decision to change what I told you as though it was your fence to change. Your crew (Nice guys) knocked on my door and told me that you told them to turn the fence with the smooth side facing the house and the poles outside. They felt it wasn't right and wanted to make sure that I was happy with the change before they continued. One even said, "We have to do what the boss tells us but the customer comes first." The concrete, new poles and brackets (You did not double them, I have pictures) changes only came when I told and showed you that the fence didn't feel secure. I barely touched the fence and it would move. That's when the subject of the taller poles came up. Tell the whole story. There was no drainage problem with the yard. The problem was when you left gaps in the fence and told me it was so the water wouldn't pool on the side of the fence towards the front when I brought the issue up. You never mentioned that the "green" wood you use would warp with the sun. Why would I agree to wood that is known warping? Every fence company that came out said that the wood should have never been used for fencing without knowing what was going on. As stated in the earlier post, I have to replace the entire fence because it's already coming apart. If you were the expert that you claimed to be, you would've known not to put this type of wood up in the first place and presented it as "cedar" wood. The truth is, you didn't know the difference. In fact, I sent you information about a lumber company to get the material and YOU told me that material was of poor quality. You mentioned my wife. She never said anything to you other then gave her opinion when WE (You, me and your crew) asked for it when discussing the look of the fence and dog run. Christians don't lie about other Christians' spouses to support a retort that isn't true? Could you stand before Yahweh and say she said anything wrong to you? God won't bless that Dave. You know this. In fact, could you say any of the things I said here or before isn't true? Be better than this Dave. I know you can. You brought the financial concerns up of paying your supply guys and crew and was paid during the start of the fence construction. The payment for the fence was done in trust due to the work done on the roof and our perceived friendship. I was wrong, shame on me. Had I known that your guys were not qualified to build the fence, that project would have never started and our business would have concluded with the payment for the roof. The money I stated that you owe me came from YOUR Angie's list page listing your coupons (You never honored this, nor do you have proof you did) and the referral fees (Are you saying that I didn't bring you people that paid for YOUR services?). My neighbors agreed to pay for the side of the fence that we share and you stated that you didn't want to charge them. Your second crew was no better than the first. Because I covered them in the first post, I won't repeat myself. Reread the original post to see what I said about them. As far as the workout dummy, really? Are you really trying to paint yourself as being threaten by me? Why were we in my garage Dave? We finished talking about the fence and started talking about the Lord and martial arts. Did I not show

Customer has paid ZERO DOLLARS for the fence. Cedar wood was the only wood used for the pickets. Period.

Customer Response • Jul 01, 2020

The invoice/contract I have signed by you says otherwise. Other professionals have all said differently and have provided proof. Thanks.

The customer has not paid one cent for his fence. He has no receipt or canceled check. Period. I have all the material receipts that prove all the pickets were cedar. I can't understand why people want to complain about something they did not pay for???

Customer Response • Jul 08, 2020

I have proof *** I asked you for receipts and breakdowns of everything. Funny that now you have receipts. Once again, I have the signed invoice/contract by you. The fact you stated I am complaining about the fence proves my point you didn't know what you were doing. Now the world knows. My complaint is because I paid for it. Be blessed.
