Review: The roofer replaced my roof in 2011. I replaced it due to some storm damage, age & CertainTeed warranty. The roof didn't lesk when I replaced it. There have been leaking problems ever since the roof has been replaced. [redacted] (the owner) came out once to put some sealer around the skylights & this didn't fix the leaks. I have since had another roofer examine the workmanship. In his opinion, the shingles were not installed properly according to the manufacturer's instructions and the sealer used by [redacted] was not the proper sealer to use for the application and the conditions.
My ceiling & insulation are being ruined as a result of this poor workmanship.
I have been trying to contact [redacted] to resolve these issue for almost 3 years. He either will not take my calls if he recognizes my phone number or fails to return the repeated messages I have left on his answering machine. I finally was able to reach him on 04/10/14. Once he knew who it was & why I called he was extremely rude and refused to even discuss any type of resolution to the leaking problems. He in fact dared me to sue him.Desired Settlement: At this point, I would like a full refund because I am going to have to spend over $3000.00 to fix the roof, repaint my ceiling and repair the additional damage to the insulation & ceilings.

Response:
This letter is in response to the customer complaint filed
with your organization by former customer [redacted]. This response was written by the owner [redacted]
T. [redacted] who provided the estimate and worked on the roofing project as well
as direct communication with the customer.
The day I ([redacted]) went to bid the job, [redacted] took me in her house and
showed me stains around the skylights and vents. I immediately informed her of the problems I
have been called on by others in the past with those exact factory-installed
skylights. [redacted] was told by me that she
should contact the manufacturer. [redacted]
responded “I have tried but found out the company was out of business”. I don’t recall if she meant the manufactured
home builder or the plastic skylight manufacturer. I then told her of 2 other homes with the
same plastic-domed skylights that were leaking at that time. My suggestion to her was to replace them with
a good quality wood and aluminum clad skylights. [redacted] said that she understood then asked me
if I would try first use the existing skylights because she didn’t want to
afford the cost of replacing at the time.
With the suggestion that I gave her, [redacted] instructed me to go ahead
with replacing the roof, using the existing skylights and doing the best we
could with what we had.
Since I replaced the roof, I have been to her house 3 times to reseal
the skylights and then it will last for a while. Because the skylights have no flashing,
expansion and contraction breaks all sealants I’ve seen including the sealant
the manufactured-home company’s sealant they used. The last time that I was at her house, I told
her that I took pictures of the cracks and would not be doing this sealing
anymore for free. I assume that is why
it was so long since we had heard from [redacted].
By the way, the 2 other houses mentioned in this statement are
manufactured houses likes her and had the same problem skylights with no
resolution from the company. The problem
skylights which were the original cause for leaking and are still the cause of
this continued leaking problem into these houses including [redacted]’s. Prior to me getting the phone call for a
roofing bid, A-1 Roofing & Construction had nothing to do with her leaking
problems. To this day, the 2 other home
owners still have leaks if they don’t keep applying more sealant and often due
to expansion and contraction with climate variation. The roof is not the cause
of leaks; the skylights always have been and are still the source of the leaks in
her house. Also, I would be extremely interested in [redacted]’s
“other roofer” including his roofing credentials or tenure (i.e. years of
experience, certified shingle applicator, state certification, business
legitimacy including proper insurance and tax liability).
P.S. > to whom it may concern, if A-1 Roofing & Construction’s
long-standing reputation and credibility is damaged in any way, I will look
into court action for the first time since the company has been in business
since 1979 and I’ve owned the company since 1991.
If you have any questions or
need additional information, please feel free to contact our business office at
###-###-#### leaving a voice message if necessary. I work a full-time job outside of my office
responsibilities for A-1 and [redacted] is out of the office most of the time working
on the job with his crew. We have
operated a completely legitimate Wisconsin small business since 1991 and want
to ensure that one person does not have the opportunity of tarnishing our
hard-earned positive reputation.
Sincerely,
Consumer
