A-1 Transmission & Auto Repair Reviews (5)

Mr. [redacted] issue is with the extended service company [redacted], not with A-1 Transmissions. Being that he authorized us to do the work which they covered, we cannot and did not do additional work. On the first visit, we replaced the brake line and 2 wheel cylinders.  Although the vacuum...

booster and master cylinder needed replacement, this was not authorized by [redacted]. Again, Mr. [redacted] was aware of this but only authorized us to do the work which [redacted] approved. On the second visit, after going back and forth several times with [redacted], we did get them to approve replacing the vacuum booster and master cylinder. This was considered by [redacted] to be a new and separate repair, so it was of course subject to a new and separate deductible. [redacted]’s extended service contract does not call for one deductible ever, it is per repair. When he dropped the vehicle off the second time, he was out of the country for at least a week. We held his vehicle for over a week after it was completed.   We did test drive the vehicle, and the reason the master cylinder was left in it was that he requested it, even though there was a core charge which he did not pay

I have reviewed the response offer made by the business in reference to complaint ID [redacted], and have determined that this proposed action would not resolve my complaint.  For your reference, details of the offer I reviewed appear below.
Regards,
[redacted] A1 Transmission's response has nothing to do with the fact that 267 miles were put on my truck during the 3 weeks they had it. Nor do they address the issues of; a half full soda can left in vehicle, grease and dirt on steering wheel, brake fluid and/or transmission fluid all over the bed liner and leaving the mirrors, seat and radio adjustments to fit whomever was using it. Nor do they address the fact that the gas tank was 'dead' empty. I left the truck with a 3/4 Full tank of gas. Yes, I was out of the country for a week. What does that have to do with anything? I brought the truck to A1 Transmission the Monday after I returned home and they kept it for 3 weeks from the date I left it with them. 3 full weeks to put a new master brake cylinder and vacuum booster in it. Normally a 4 hour job. I was not out of the country during those 3 weeks. My being out of the country or anywhere else has nothing to do with any of this time frame.

Review: Had them put in a transmission a month ago. Paid 3000 dollars. Got a 2 year warranty since they worked on car it's been back in shop 3 times. Does the same thing each time but yet they say it isnt transmission related or find some excuse to have to spend more money with them. Costumer service has been horrible to the point when I call the owner he says hes not there when I know his voice, very distinctive also showed up at shop after being told he wasn't there and he was. Have been lied to about things, think its all a run around to get more money.Desired Settlement: Would like refund for all labor cost not parts. Obviously the work isnt sufficient.

Response:

Customer brought her vehicle in on March 9 to have the transmission rebuilt, which we did. Our warranty covers repairs which we did, it is not an entire vehicle warranty. On April 20th customer returned, needing a left front axle shaft. We did that job for her (replaced the axle). This is not part of the transmission, therefore is not covered under the transmission warranty.A few days later the customer returned with engine problems, due to a timing chain needing replacement. The timing chain is part of the engine, not part of the transmission, and therefore not covered under the transmission warranty. The vehicle is a 2004 with over 130,000 miles, and it is unreasonable to expect the warranty on a transmission rebuild to be a full-vehicle bumper to bumper warranty, which we obviously don't offer.A warranty covers the specific repair, and warrants that if there were a defect in the materials or workmanship for that repair it would be fixed. No warranty, including ours, offers a refund, especially if the vehicle later needs unrelated repairs.

Review: I brought my truck, a 2005 Dodge Dakota SLT, to A1 Transmission in [redacted] because a brake line rusted through and the brakes failed while I was driving it and that is where the Extended Service Contract company, "[redacted]", said to have it towed to. They had it for 9 days and only replaced one brake line and 2 rear wheel cylinders which was all "[redacted]" allowed. At that time '[redacted]', the owner, asked me to pay the $50 deductible for the "[redacted]" Extended Service contract, upfront which I did. When I picked up the truck [redacted] told me; "I could use it for awhile but would have to bring it back because the brakes were "mushy" and it needed a master brake cylinder and Vacuum Booster. I brought the truck back to him on 21 March '16 and this time they had my truck for 3 weeks, 21 March to 14 April '16. After a week I began calling him once or twice a week to ask if it was ready. He kept telling me; "It will be ready for you tomorrow." When I dropped the truck off for the second time, it had just over 3/4 tank of gas and was generally clean inside. When I picked it up '[redacted]' asked me to pay another $50 deductible. I asked him why I would pay another $50 for the same job. He said I would have to speak to the 'Warranty Co., "[redacted]" about it. I did not pay a second "one time" deductible at that time. When I got in my truck the gas tank was Empty. Dead empty. Fortunately the nearest gas station was only 3 blocks away. I put $15.00 in the tank at $1.86/Gal and that brought it to less than half full. It usually takes about $27-$28 dollars to fill it. It was obviously 'running on fumes'. There was a half full soda can in the cup holder (I don't drink soda) and popcorn on the passenger seat. I had to readjust the driver seat, both the bottom and back parts. I had to adjust all the mirrors. The radio was left on AM. I use FM. The steering wheel was so filthy I had to clean it, and my hands, 3 times. The bed liner was covered with brake fluid and what appears to be transmission fluid. The old master brake cylinder was left in a box in the truck bed. To add insult to injury, they put 267 miles on my truck. When I confronted the owner, [redacted], about the mileage and the empty gas tank etc. he said; "One of my guys took it home one night so just forget the $50 deductible." The owner, [redacted], said it was "[redacted]" who worked on my truck and he will fire him." 'Someone' made themselves right at home in my truck and I suspect used it to commute daily and from the looks of it used it to pick up and drop off brake and transmission parts and transmissions.? I cannot believe a Certified Mechanic would abuse my truck and my trust the way [redacted] and A1 Transmission did. When I called "[redacted]", the Extended Service Contract Co., at 1717 hrs on Tuesday, 19 April '16, about the problems and abuse, "[redacted]" said; "You have to take that up with the shop that did the work."Desired Settlement: Resolution: ?I want A1 Transmission of [redacted] to reimburse me for the use (and abuse) of my truck which includes; the 267 miles they put on it and 3 weeks Rental fees, Cleaning fees for the bed liner and interior and a full tank of gas. A total of $401.81 if I take care of everything myself. If he wants to clean the truck and fill the gas tank then I expect him to reimburse me $276.81 for the Rental fees and mileage.

Fees: 267 miles at $.10 cents/mile=$26.70. Full tank of Gas=$25.00. Rental fees for a 4WD, Automatic transmission, Access cab truck with Receiver Hitch tow bar $11.91/day x 21 days=$250.11 Plus a $100.00 cleaning fee. Total: $401.81

Review: My Transmission Overheat light came on. I took it to my regular mechanic and he unfortunately does not do transmission work. So I took it to A1 Transmissions because after all transmission is in there name so I thought they'd be a safe choice. When I dropped it off I explained that the main reason for dropping it off was the Transmission Light and that it had left me on side of road a few times when the light came on because it starts to whine and then looses the ablilty to move although it stays running but I can have gas pedal to the floor and it doesnt move until I sit long enough for it to cool and light to go off. They stated they would drive it, try to see if light will come on and get back to me. They called a few days later and told me that it needed "valves" replaced and they recommended a tune up. It would cost $400+. At the time I wasnt sure if I wanted to do the repairs so I told them I was coming to pick it up and I'd let them know if I decided to fix it. I paid the diagnostics fee and brought it to a family members house that was closer to the shop than my home. Eventually we did decide to go ahead with the repairs including the tune up, since it was already going to be there anyway and I had managed to borrow enough money to cover that so I dropped the Jeep back off about a week later.

It took a few days to hear from them but I eventually did and they said it was fixed and all ready for pick up. I came, paid the money and drove around for quite a bit before heading home, then my light came back on and I was stuck on the side of the road AGAIN, I called the next morning as soon as they opened and told them that it apparently was not fixed. They told me to bring it back in.

Upon looking at my reciept I noticed that the valves they replaced in fact were to do with an oil leak NOT the transmission like I had thought. So basically I brought my vehicle in for a TRANSMISSION problem, paid $400+ and they did nothing to the transmission. Looking back they were very vague when they told me "valves" but since I had brought it in for the transmission problem I believed that whatever they reccomended would fix that problem.

Its currently still at the shop. Its been nearly a month. They have not answered calls, answered and said they'd call back but dont and have changed up the story several times. I have been told "I dont know what else to do with this Jeep". They supposedly took it to a Jeep Dealership to have them look at it. The front desk man told me that dealership had said it needed a transmission fluid change (which shouldnt that have been done during tune up?) and a coolant system. But when I called and the owner answered he gave me the same ole I dont know what else to do speech. When I inquired about the dealerships reccommendations he acted as if he wasnt aware I knew about that and said umm umm well yea they did reccommend coolant system and fluid change but I have driven it and driven it and it is not getting hot so I dont think that is the problem. At this point I just say ok and hang up because Im frustrated.

A few minutes later he calls and says I have a master tech friend coming in tomorrow I will have him look at it and let you know something tomorrow. Didnt hear anything the next day so the 3rd day which is today 9/9/2015 I called. Ohhh yes we reccomend a coolant system & fluid change. It seems like the system is clogged on one side. It is estimated at $300 for repairs.

I stated that I didnt feel like I should owe them anything because it was not repaired the first time. In turn I was put on hold for several minutes then finally they came back and stated that I would need to talk with the owner who was not there at the time and that they would leave a note for him to call me in the morning.Desired Settlement: I would like either a full refund from the "repairs" they did the first go round or preferable I would like for them to fix it and not charge me anymore. I feel like they have given me the run around, where not truthful on what they were repairing the first time and that they have had the Jeep for a sigifigant amount of time that shouldnt have been needed. My husband is out of work and had a job offered to him but not until he had his vehicle back which I have been using for work myself so this couldve also potentially cost him a job oppurtunity as well.

Response:

In response to complaint ID [redacted]We received the customer’s vehicle with the complaint that the transmission overheat light was coming on and the vehicle not moving. The only issue shown in the diagnostics (via the vehicle’s electronic control module) was a problem with the engine valves. This can cause the problems which the customer was experiencing. We let the customer know that this was the only issue showing, but that they can be other issues as well, which cannot be diagnosed until this issue is repaired. Per the customer’s request, and after explaining this, we did this repair along with an engine tune up. (Customer states that a transmission fluid change should have been done as part of an engine tune up, which is never part of a standard engine tune up, and was not requested or paid for by the customer.) We completed the work she requested then test drove the vehicle with no issues. Everything worked fine. At a later point the customer called back saying she was experiencing issues, so we asked her to bring it in, and we consulted the manufacturer. They asked us to take it to the dealer service department, where they diagnosed a blocked transmission cooler, causing the transmission issues. Based on the dealer’s diagnosis, what is needed is to replace the transmission cooler and to change the transmission fluid, which deteriorated due to the overheating. We communicated this to the customer, and offered to perform the work. Customer left the vehicle here for about a month, wanting free repairs. We asked her to take it to the dealer if she didn’t want the work done here, but that we cannot buy parts for her and do work for free. We did not charge her storage, which is standard for a vehicle that sits here or at any repair facility other than to have repairs done. All of our work is covered by warranty, but we cannot offer repairs for free unless it is a warranty repair.

Regards,

[redacted] Its stated in there response that "the only issue shown in the diagnostics (via the vehicles electric control module) was a problem with the engine valves. " " We let the customer know that this was the only issue showing..." "per customers request, after explaining this, we did this repair along with an engine tune up."I disagree because they failed to explain to me that it was an "engine" valve problem and because I took it there for a transmission issue I thought it was a valve in transmission that was getting repaired. Once again they were very vague in explaining what they were going to be doing but I went with what they suggested because I trusted they knew what they were doing and were honest. I also did not just leave it sitting at shop for a month awaiting FREE repairs. During that month I was adiment on the fact that I wanted and needed my vehicle back as soon as possible considering having only one vehicle between my husband and I was and still is very inconvient. It took them a month to tell me what they thought may be wrong (never a definate) at which point I was fed up and went and retrieved my vehicle because I lost trust in there ablilty to properly determine what was wrong.
