Complaint: [redacted]
I am rejecting this response because: Per the Revdex.com directions there was supposed to be a response from the Business within 10 days, and it might take 30 days to attempt to resolve the issues. The complaint was made on 11/10/2014, the response is from 1/13/2015. The response is late and it is incorrect in many regards. There was absolutely no balance owed on the roofing contract, it was paid in full a few days after completion in December 2014, despite the fact that the contractors were told from day one that their laborers had damaged the front of the building in their haste to complete the roof in the dark on the second day, and that they needed to repair this area in a cosmetic manner as it was the first part of the building the public sees as they drive up. On one meeting in the fall of 2014, after they had tried to repair the small roof twice already and made it worse each time, [redacted] told me they had one year to fix the problems. I waited until the full year was up before filing the Revdex.com complaint and I waited until the complaint was finalized as no response, prior to hiring another roofing firm to fix the small roof.  When we went on the roof to look at the work, the new firm showed me that A and J had also removed the cement cove at the top of the chimney and let water sit in the bricks for the entire year.  They had also left the chimney without the roof cap they were to put on it.  The new flashing A and J had placed around the chimney was also visibly separated from the chimney already and needed to be replaced.  These repairs were completed between December 19 and December 25, 2014, one year after the roof was completed.  The cement cove on the top of the chimney was $300.00, the contractor who did this reported the chimney had a hairline crack on the South side;  Was this from the year that the weather had to go down into the open bricks due to A and J???? The roofing bill for removing the damaged roof from over the box window, re-roofing this area, replacing the flashing on the chimney and installing the chimney cap-- was $1325.00 --- minus the cost of painting the old attic fan lids.  The cost for replacing the attic fan that was removed from my property was $350.00.  the cost for re-attaching the surgery room fan back through the new roof was $180.00.   Neither the building inspector nor A and J's roofer were ever on or in the building where these deficiencies could be noticed. But they were all reported to A and J long before I had them fixed.  The Quality of a 30 year roof is not measured by if it holds out the weather for one year.   A and J created the damage to the front of the building and their attempted repairs of this roof were substandard let alone cosmetic. If A and J did send their roofer out it was without our knowledge and he would have had to trespass to inspect the roof and/or to go onto the roof without permission. If he did inspect, [redacted] has still never relayed his findings except through the comment to you on January 13, 2015.                                     ...  In Summary, the roofing job that A and J performed is substandard in all of the regards as previously mentioned---- water damaged roof plywood not replaced, chimney flashing not adhered to the chimney, a removed and never replace roof fan, an exhaust fan left on and never re-vented  to the new roof, damaged building front and box window roofing, cement cove removed off the chimney and not replaced, no chimney cap placed. The cost of the repair bills listed here are over $2000.00 ---- and besides that I still have a poor job----- AND the bill was paid in full a few days after the job was supposed to be complete.  If copies of the receipts from DGM Electric, Terry Hughes Roofing and Siding, and BK Concrete, LLC are needed, please contact me and my secretary can scan them in and attach them. Sincerely, [redacted]

Review: Contractor was paid a deposit of $5,400 to started siding & window project and was fired due to lack of performance for negligently installing a portion of siding and for ordering the wrong size windows per their own measurements. After being fired, contractor returned materials to supplier and received refund. Contractor agreed to return $2,000 of the $5,400 deposit but has not delivered payment. It was subsequently discovered that contractor placed dryer vent against existing wall rather than vent to the outside. This constitutes a major fire hazard.Desired Settlement: Refund of my $2,000

Review: A & J started our siding job October of 2014 after a hail storm. We were told that the windows could not be completed until the spring due to the cold weather. After contacting the contractor 20 times in the spring with texts and phone messages, no one came to complete the job. The contractor would only text me "he would finish." but never showed up. When I drove to the store front, it was closed up and the phones were disconnected. There was a for rent sign in the window. The contractor cashed the check we received from our home owners and the job is still unfinished a year later. A & J is out of business and we are out of our insurance money and have windows that are not completed. We now have to hire another contractor because of the water damage that could occur. Our siding job is also terrible because the siding is falling off as well as the trim around some windows.Desired Settlement: I just want my windows completed or some money back to give to another company that will finish.

Review: submitted already, some text omitted.

I contracted with A and J to replace the roof on my commercial building in November 2013. 1. The contract was for approximately $18,000.00. They completed the roof in 2 days, December 20 and December 21, 2013. On the second day, just before dark at 4:30, they replaced a small roof over a bay window, 3 feet by 12 feet. They damaged the ends of the wood siding on the building for the 12 foot length of the bay window. I told the laborer immediately that day, that the siding was damaged as the contractor in charge ([redacted]) had already left. I told [redacted] immediately that this was prominent part of the building and that the wood siding should not have been damaged except for their haste in trying to finish before dark in two days, and it needed a high quality repair to make it acceptable to me. It took them over 6 months to try to repair this section of the building, and when they did they damaged the new roof in this section. I asked them to fix it again, and their second repair made it worse. 2. Over the course of the six months after the roofing installation, I noted that one area of the roof always appeared to be wet in the same area every day. The principal, [redacted], promised to send the roofer out to look at this area, but never did this. 3. The original roof fan was removed by the roofers and apparently removed from my property and no roof fan was ever installed on the new roof. I had to purchase a new roof fan and have it installed by another contractor. 4. The old roof leaked around one vent. One plywood sheet around that vent was replaced, but the next plywood sheet below this with significant water damage was not replaced. 4. I have not received a copy of the warranty for the shingles or the labor. 5. The roof they damaged over the window and the paperwork should have been done and given to me in December 2013.Desired Settlement: I would like the company to 1. pay for another roofing company of my choice to repair and reroof the small roof. 2. Pay the bill for the new roof fan and its installation. 3. to have their roofer come out and explain why the one area is always wet and come up with a solution for this at their expense, to have the owners of the company come out and look at the poor quality work and the remaining damaged plywood on the roof, and pay for this to be repaired or refund some of the money already paid for this to be repaired in the future. 5. To get an inspection of the entire roof job by an independent competent roofer and make sure there are no other areas of deficiencies in the roofing and certify that the rest of the roof is up to current standards for roofing. 6. The company offered a bonus for the "foreman" if the work came in under budget. This practice encourages poor workmanship. The company needs to change this policy, or publically state that this is their policy to the consumer.

Response:

There were numerous meetings with [redacted] about this during the course of the job. This roof has past inspection with the township and the permits were closed out. There has been numerous rain and snow storms over the course of the past year and not one time did water enter the building. As far as the one side looking wetter than the other that is due to when the sun dries out the roof. Upon our last meeting in which we had with [redacted] she still owed us a balance on the project and she stated that she did not want us back out there and was using the balance to bring in an outside contractor. At this time I told her that the NJ Home Improvement Contractor Law requires us to have the opportunity to repair or replace said issues. We did have our roofer inspect and he found no damage or issues with roof. This roof has been thru over a year of weather and at no point has their been a leak reported to A&J. We had made numerous attempts to rectify this situation with her and there is no pleasing her. No matter what we did she found something to complain about, however the entire project was inspected by the township inspector and she received a Certificate of Occupancy upon completion. This would not have been attained had the work not been done satisfactorily. Please feel free to contact me via cell phone at [redacted]Thanks,[redacted]
