A Place At The Beach Homeowners Associations Reviews (1)

I owed the resorts a $478.35 2014 refurbishment assessment fee of which I paid $189.61 on July 7, 2014 leaving a ballance of $288.74 which I didn't get paid by June 15, 2014 so they sent it to a collection agency and when I went to pay it yesterday they tell me my ballance is $573.65. When I asked why so high and inquired about it I was told the the resort added a $40 late fee (letter states that would happen) and then they charged me a 60% of the ballance collecting fee (which is absurd and no where in the letter does it state that would happen) it only states that a .83% would be added monthly to ballance. I feel that is completely unfair and has to be illegal. When I was talking with Kim from the resort and was trying to tell her what my letter stated she said "it doesn't matter what the letter says this is our standard practice". I also never got a letter saying it was going to collections as the original invoice stated nor did I receive a letter from the collection agency as the original invoice stated. I believe I am being taking advantage of. I contacted 2 of the local collection Agencies in my area and they tell me they have never heard of such and that collection fees are usually a one time charge not a percentage rate let alone one of 60%.Account_Number: [redacted]Desired SettlementI believe the $273 something charges they are adding be readjusted and payed towards the other ballance I owe them for 2015. I can understand the $40 late fee but a 60% collection charge I do not think is fair and I feel I should be reimbursed for it. Business Response Contact Name and Title: [redacted], General MContact Phone:[redacted]Contact Email: [redacted]This Ms. *. is a timeshare owner at A Place at the Beach, Atlantic Beach, NC. Ms. C. owes a debt for a special assessment at the resort. Special assessments are allowed by Chapter 47C, the Articles of Incorporation, and the Bylaws, the Executive Board is granted authority to approve and implement assessments and special assessments. Ms. *. was given ample time and notice (six months) to make her payment for the assessment. Once the due date passed and payment was not received she was turned over to [redacted]. The collection agency has a right to collect the amount due A Place at the Beach plus their collection fees. [redacted] of [redacted] is the legal council for A Place at the Beach. Ms. *. is welcome to talk with [redacted] however the debt will not be forgiven nor will any refund be made.Consumer Response What could possible cost double what the balance on my acct was as an asseessment fee. What was there to assess. What is a special assessment and what assessments were implemented as this sounds like more than one assessment fee was added and this was a money collection acct so assessment fee's make no sense and I also was not contacted by the management group before this waS sent to a collection nor was I ever contacted by the collection agency once they received it and I am told by the collection agency they did not add this fee and that it was added by the Resort so how would the resort know what amount to add? This whole situation makes no sense. It is absolutely obsurd when there was nothing to assess. An amount was owed, sent to collections and no attempts were made thereafter. I am asking for proof as to why they have charged such a high amount and why both companies keep telling me it was the other ones who added the charge
