A & R General Contracting Reviews (%countItem)

A&R Contractors misrepresented their business. They claimed to have 20 years of professional experience, but they were not qualified to perform the job we paid for. This resulted in us having to hire an additional contractor to fix their work. This complaint seeks to recover the loses we sustained, having to hire an additional resource. After we had the work inspected by multiple contractors, we found that many of their practices did not comply with the standards that a professional would adhere to. They also took 3 times as long to perform the work than was expected, per the contract agreement. After we spoke with them about the completed work, Bob claimed everything was done, "By the book" when in fact, this was certainly not the case. He said we were obligated to give them an opportunity to fix the problems, but we did not trust their work or feel comfortable having him spend yet more time to finish the job that was deemed "completed."

A & R General Contracting Response • Apr 07, 2020

A & R has never misrepresented our business nor will we ever to any of our customers. My husband has 20+ years of experience along with certifications. We have done 2 drywall jobs since this customers job and these customers have no issues and are very well please with our work. We take pride in our work and go above and beyond for all our customers. Per our contract we stated it could take 7-10 days to complete. We explained to them it may take us a little longer since it is just myself and my husband and my husband being OCD to please be patient with us. The job took 16 days to complete on March 10th we finished.

During the process we asked the customers to please check things out and let us know if they seen any issues they would like fixed as we go along. Not one time was there ever an issue and they said things looked great. They waited a week after the job was complete to bring up their issues of "using the wrong drywall tape on corner and ceiling joints, all outlets were cut to big, few places needed to be sanded and mudding was to light, and screws popped on multiple walls. Windows were finished out like new construction and never should have been." Not one time were we told not to finish windows out. There were no screw pops in the walls or our sander would not have finished the walls smooth. And for those that do know about drywall, you Do Not want to finish with excessive amount of mud just to sand it off. The object is to smooth out the butt joint and feather into the wall for a smooth service. Then once the drywall is primed you are not able to tell where the joints are.

We explained to customer multiple times to prime drywall and then we will come back and fix any issues that flashes through. Customer did not prime walls when calling us back out to inspect issues they had found. When I did a walk through with the customer I video recorded our conversation along with looking over the room with each wall and ceiling on the video. Every outlet and light switch was circled along with a few small areas they wanted sanded. Only 2 outlets needed to be addressed. I ordered my patch kit and told them when I received it on Saturday we would come out to fix them. Text message from customer said "awesome". The next day I receive a text message telling me they found more issues with mudding was to light, we used wrong joint tape on corners and ceiling. When I explained we used flex joint tape that is only for the corners and joints, we heard customer telling someone in back ground "they did use flex tape" he then stated they were going to have to hire someone to come fix all our issues. We told them over the phone and through text message that we will come back and fix any issues of our work. We immediately received text after he hung up stating "we already hired another contractor to fix your work". I replied that I was sorry they were not happy with our work and we would come and fix it. Wife replied "they did not want us back in their house".

We told customer that per our contract we have the right to come fix any issues with our work before another contractor is hired. They chose not to follow our contract that was written up by a lawyer. So therefore, A&R should not have to give them money back for the issues they stated and could not show us proof on that needed fixed and they just hired someone to fix them. We would have been more that happen to come fix any issues that needed addressed.

Revdex.com:

I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to complaint ID 14266974, and have determined the response would not resolve my complaint. For your reference, details of the offer I reviewed appear below.

A&R General Contracting LLC misrepresented their expertise to perform the job they did for us. We had two qualified resources confirm that the work performed was not representative of a business that has been doing this for 20+ years. The first reference, I will call him Mike, has been doing drywall work for 20 years and here is what he said,"They were not professional drywall installers." He also pointed our these mistakes:

1. They did NOT use drywall screws, they used Deck screws. We have the evidence availalbe.

2. The did not use the proper amount of mud through the joints. Joints had to be re-finished.

3. He pushed on multiple walls and screws shown.(Pictures attached.)

4.Cracks showed up around much of the taping.

5. When drywalling the ceiling, they started from the bottom and not the top. I thought Bob wanted to give the ceiling a nice look with the bulk head, but now I understand, he likely did not know how to do the ceiling. There is now a gap where the two points should meet on the ceiling. Professionals wouldnot leave this.

6. They laid the drywall with the wrong orientation. 4x8 pieces should be laid with the long side going across, not up and down. It is only done this way on commercial applications with metal joists.

7. They left joints on either side of the door frame. This is not how you do the doors because it's likely to leave cracks after many open and close of the door. A professional would know this.

8. Level 5 finishing was required to complete this job, and we paid to have this performed. Extra money that should not have been required, based on our contract for the work.

9. One person was capable of performing this job in 1 week, even with help, they took multiple weeks, which even included Sat. and Sun. Clearly, a professional would not require that amount of time.

We attached some pictures which in no way show the magnitude of the issues that multiple professionals found after observing the work.

Regards,

Steve S
