A Step In Time Chimney Sweeps Reviews (2)

My experience started on Feb8, The tech and helper showed up at my request to give me an estimate and perhaps do the workI was selling the house and through an home owner inspection it was discovered that a tube liner was in the chimney and needed to be removed, and the top of the chimney needed to have mortar redone on the topBecause it was a hip roof the tech could stand on the roof and re-mortar the top with no ladderThe price quoted by the tech was *** for the mortar repair and *** for the removal of the linerI asked if he was planning to remove the old deteriorated mortar and replacing it with new? He said his special mortar would attach itself to the old mortar and bricksWhen asked why the prices were so high, when I see less than minutes of workHe said the mortar was very expensive and he didn't know how long it would take him to remove the linerHe agreed to take *** off the mortar work and didn't budge on the linerI needed to close on the house and didn't need anything holding me up, so I reluctantly agreed to the *** priceThe tech then jumped up on top of the chimney reached down and pulled up the liner and tossed it to the ground, less than minutesThen took a Galbucket less than half filled and troweled it on the top and smoothed it out took minutesThe only thing the helper did was smash down the liner and disposed of itwhen I gave him a check I asked him how he could sleep at night working for minutes and charging *** That's like making *** an hourThat's more than any doctor or lawyer makeHis response: "YOU KNOW THE BUSINESS"I feel like I got ripped off badly and at first I put it on the tech and not "A STEP IN TIME"But a week after the job a lady called me for a survey responseWhen I explained what happened she said if it would be okay if the owner gave me a call, I said I would welcome his callWell it's been months and I have yet to get a call, it sounded good when the lady said he would callMaybe it was the company maybe this was there practice

Very favorable experience! Estimated cost was right on target. Robert, our technician called ahead of time to let us know he was on the way. Work was completed efficiently and expertly done. This was a major repair of the chimney. Tiles were removed as well as a stainless steel liner installed. All work was done properly with excellent clean up too! Highly recommend A Step In Time and Robert too!

Description: Our story here at A Step in Time in Virginia Beach, VA is a fun one worth sharing.

It all started in the year 1991, at a time where there was a recession and many college graduates had difficulty finding a job. Ray had just graduated from Virginia Tech in civil engineering came face-to-face with the same difficulties in finding employment. From there, he decided to attend graduate school at Old Dominion University to obtain a master’s degree and hopefully attract the attention of potential employers.

Ray continued applying for positions at various engineering firms while pursuing his second degree. Finally, Ray landed an engineering job by offering to work for very low wages. This didn’t phase him because viewed the job experience as a continuation of graduate school. While in graduate school and working for a local engineering firm, Ray also had to balance his time with his new family— which included raising his little daughter, Kaitlynn.

Times were tough and money was very tight. Ray started to reminisce about his time in high school when he had a fun little lawn business during the summers. This inspired Ray to follow his old tracks and once again open a lawn business.

On weekends, Ray would cut lawns to bring in extra money. The business became an instant success! Ray quickly started earning more money on weekends than from working full-time at his engineering job.

One day, while cutting the lawn of his parent’s house, a family friend named Donny Gummer stopped by. Donny was in his 60s at that time and noticed the lawn business was going very well for Ray. He went on to mention that he was considering starting a chimney sweep company. Donny told Ray that he was inspired by his time in New York, where he found the chimney sweep business to be booming. It seemed like everyone needed a chimney sweep!

Donny then asked Ray if he would help him start this chimney sweep company, in addition to giving him advice on how to acquire new customers. Ray agreed to help Donny in the fall— when his lawn business was expected to calm down and when chimney sweeping demand was expected to pick up. When the fall season finally approached, Ray shut down his lawn operation and set off to begin cleaning chimneys.
