Car came into our shop with an intermittent code for a pressure control solenoid A circuit open, causing a hard shift.  We replaced the controller with a used one and an internal pressure control solenoid.  Car left running in good order.  9 months later the customer brought...

the car in stating it is doing the same thing as the first visit.  We scanned the controller to find a code for a now shorted pressure control solenoid.  A completely new issue. After diagnosing the problem we found that the internal wiring harness for the transmission controller was shorted out due to water contamination and corrosion. After we replaced the internal transmission wire harness we then found it had also shorted out the controller.  Controller was replaced with a good used one which resolved the pressure control issue.  After completion of the repair we road tested the auto. Found that it now has a harsh engagement into reverse and a slip into second gear and set a code for a gear ratio error in second gear.  The Customer chose to drive the vehicle with the pressure control condition for an extended period of time until we could schedule it in for repairs which caused other problems in the transmission.  The only thing we charged them for the second time was the controller and harness at cost even though it was a new issue.  The reason it took some time was we had to work with Ford motors to get the correct wiring harness.  We had quite a bit of time diagnosing what was wrong and fixing the first problem to find that it caused the second problem which is more damage to the actual transmission.  We did not damage the controller the wiring short did the damage.  We felt bad for the customer’s situation and did not charge them for any of the many hours of labor to locate the problem and only charged them for the parts used and our cost. We have done nothing wrong in this matter and feel we have been more than fair to this customer.
