AAMCO Transmission-Rancho Cordova Reviews (1)

Review: The vehicle was taken to AAMCO for a timing belt replacement. The timing belt was improperly installed causing catastrophic engine damage.

The vehicle was taken to AAMCO in September of 2012 for a timing belt replacement as required by the manufacturer. The timing belt was improperly installed causing catastrophic engine damage while still at AAMCO. AAMCO offered to replace the engine with a used engine of equivalent millage. I agreed with the condition that a warranty would be provided for said engine. The first engine that AAMCO installed had a cracked head and even though they were aware of the faulty engine, they had me pick up the vehicle and drive home. The vehicle did not operate properly, was overheating and coolant would be expelled every time the engine was shut off. I returned the vehicle to AAMCO the same day. AAMCO offered to install a second engine. A second used engine was installed and a one year 12,000 mile warranty was given. I paid a bill to AAMCO in the amount of $1592.68 for the timing belt replacement on the second installed engine.

Within the warranty period, the second engine began to leak a significant amount of coolant. The vehicle was taken to AAMCO for diagnostics. AAMCO determines that the cause of the leak was a faulty thermostat. The thermostat is part of the engine assembly that was installed last. AAMCO suggested me taking the vehicle to another repair shop. I then reminded them of the warranty they had given for the engine. AAMCO claimed that this is not covered under the warranty and that it was normal wear and tear. I requested the list of parts cover under this warranty, the owner ([redacted]) did not provide the list as requested and began to speak in a rude manner stating that this vehicle has already cost him too much money. I explained that their incompetence was the reason for his expenditures and my extreme inconvenience. A heated argument ensued during which [redacted] the owner made a threatening gesture towards me telling me not to yell at him. I immediately demanded my keys and left the shop.

During the weeks that AAMCO was locating and installing engines I requested that AAMCO provide me with a rental car at their expense. AAMCO refused and offered me the shop vehicle instead. I explained that I was uncomfortable with this due to liability reasons. So I was left without a vehicle for this prolonged period and had to rent vehicles at my expense on separate occasions.

I took the vehicle to another shop and had to pay $947.61 to replace the thermostat. The shop also noted that there was dry coolant formed around the rear corner of the rear cylinder indicating possible defective engine. The vehicle was picked up on 07/24/2013.Desired Settlement: In terms of settlement, I expect AAMCO to pay the $947.61 for the thermostat repairs and an additional $500 for rental reimbursement and the inconvenience that they caused me and my family not to mention the extremely rude and unprofessional behavior they demonstrated towards me.

Business' Initial Response

Customer was angry because we did not think leak of the housing was a warranty related item. This is a common leak/repair to this motor. We originally recommended having vehicle fixed at another shop however did give a price quote to fix leak. After a unpleasant exchange we offered to fix the vehicle at no charge. Customer declined and said he was taking the vehicle to another shop and expected us to pay for the repair. He was informed that repair would be completed here at no charge and this shop would not pay another shop to do the work. The offer to repair the vehicle at no charge was written on both his copy and the shop copy of the paper work the customer signed. Since customer declined that offer we will not pay for any of claims for payment. As far as rental car claim, that was 8 months ago and at that time he declined use of a free car owned by the shop owner. Therefore we are not offering to pay for that as well.

Consumer's Final Response

(The consumer indicated he/she DID NOT accept the response from the business.)

AAMCO mentioned in their response that they offered to fix the problem at no charge. This statement is not true. If they had we would not be having this dispute. What they offered was a threat. Towards the end of the heated argument, I requested my key and said that I will be filing an official complaint. This is when [redacted] (owner) yelled back saying that they will fix it but it was going to take a long time. Please keep in mind that when they thought that I was going to pay for the repair they gave me an estimate of 1 day. After all the trouble and financial losses they have caused me as a result of their incompetence, not to mention physical threats and rudeness, they offer nothing to remedy this situation. This is by far the worst business that I have come across.
