AAMCO Transmission Reviews (136)

On 10/15/2016, [redacted] brought her 2004 Mitsubishi Galant to AAMCO stating there was a flapping noise.  A qualified technician performed a road test and hoist check and found the exhaust was restricted and had fault code P0431 "catalytic converter efficiency". ...

Diagnostics were authorized in the amount of $98.00 and found the exhaust manifold containing two catalytic converters had broken internally and pieces were found in the exhaust system downstream from the exhaust manifold.  Ms. [redacted] was advised that the exhaust manifold needed replacement and was given a price for parts and labor in the amount of $2,144.08.  The  part is ONLY AVAILABLE THROUGH THE DEALER AS AN ORIGINAL PART. Ms. [redacted] authorized the repair 10/5/2016 at 11:46am by phone [redacted].  She was told that pieces of the original manifold's catalytic converter went into the rear catalytic converter and muffler and may also need replacement.  On two subsequent visits the technician told Ms. [redacted] that the remaining exhaust system, (after the manifold) is plugged.  We recommended she take it to a muffler shop for further diagnostics.  Again, the broken manifold (we still have in our possession) came apart and pieces from it went into the exhaust system after the manifold catalytic converters.  The original invoice #[redacted] states "may need muffler replacement"
Since the original problem was addressed and repaired, the customer authorized the repair and we identified additional repairs were necessary, no refund is warranted. A copy of the repair order #[redacted] will be sent by fax.

AAMCO provides a Multi Point Check for $39.95 which includes a detailed check externally of the vehicles mechanical systems, a diagnostic scan of the vehicles computer system for trouble codes and a road test to verify the customers concern. Upon our check we found the transmission fluid level was...

over filled and the condition of the fluid was discolored with a burnt odor. On a road test we found the transmission to be slipping in 1st gear with a long delay into 2nd gear, intermittently 2nd gear would neutralize and slip on a 2-3 shift. Shutter upon torque converter engagement. Noise internally from transmission. Tech noted noise from A/C compressor and battery light on. Technician performed a starting and charging system check for the battery light being on and found the battery charge was normal at 12.61 volts and alternator was charging normally at 14 volts. These results indicated an internal problem with the transmission that would not be able to be corrected with a minor repair or adjustment. There was also going to be additional diagnostic time to perform an electrical diagnostic for the battery light being on. Battery light being on had nothing to do with the problems with the transmission. The next step in the process of repairing the transmission would be to perform an internal inspection which includes removing the transmission from the vehicle, disassembling the transmission and thoroughly inspecting all of the 200-300 parts inside of the transmission to confirm cause of failure, determine which parts all need to be replaced and be able to give an exact price for repairing the transmission. This inspection was authorized in the amount of $895.00 on 12/1/14 at 2:55 pm. Our customers are given a soft parts overhaul price which includes all the labor necessary to remove, rebuild and reinstall the transmission, the parts we know that need to be replaced to ensure a quality rebuild and the fluid filled to manufacturer specifications. Upon internal inspection if there are any hard parts, electrical components and if the torque converter need to be replaced, they are at an additional charge. The customers soft parts overhaul price was given in the amount of $1,994.74 with the torque converter being $379.00. As an absolute worst case in the event that this transmission is unable to be rebuilt we give our customers an absolute worst case scenario of the transmission having to be replaced. For this vehicle the replacement price for the transmission including transmission fluid and the labor to replace the transmission was $3,600. Upon internal inspection we found the transmission has moderate damage however was able to be repaired for the subtotal price of $2,868.67. [redacted] used our financing to have the repairs completed and there is a 10% extended payment handling fee for the total amount financed. The finance charge was $311.23 bringing his price before tax to 3178.90. With tax on parts only the total invoice price was $3291.75. The authorization to perform repairs was given on 12/2/14 at 2:41 pm. We performed the rebuild and installed the transmission. On the final road test all transmission shifts were present and on time and the vehicle was ready for delivery. Customer declined additional inspection time for the electrical testing for the battery light and did not want to address the noise that was coming from the compressor area. Customer picked the vehicle up 12/12/14. Customer returned for our complimentary 10 day recheck. Our technician found all transmission shifts present and on time, fluid level and condition normal and no trouble codes in the computer system. Customer told [redacted] she was concerned with a noise however did not have time to leave the vehicle for further inspection. On 1/2/15 [redacted] contacted [redacted] in the morning with questions about the financing and also explained to [redacted] that there was concerns he had with the vehicle. [redacted] advised him to bring the vehicle back so we could recheck the vehicle for him. [redacted] agreed that he would be bringing the vehicle back in. On Tuesday 1/6/15 [redacted] contacted customer [redacted] asking her to bring the vehicle back in to have concerns addressed. [redacted] agreed to bring the vehicle back in however to date the customer has not brought the vehicle in to have the vehicle checked. If customers concern is related to the repairs that we performed and is covered under the warranty there would be no additional charge to look at the vehicle and correct the problem. If the concern is related to a separate part of the vehicle, example: battery or compressor noise area, additional charges will come into play if customer authorized additional repairs. We are not declining to check the vehicle and are not declining to honor our warranty. Customer is urged to bring the vehicle in immediately to prevent further damage from occurring if there in fact is a transmission problem.

The service that you authorized for $39.95 is an external check. The initial check in form that you received a copy of and signed for clearly states what our check consists of. After our check was completed it was confirmed that you have an internal transmission problem and it needs to be rebuilt. There was no maybe involved with our check. Unfortunately we are not able to see the extent of damage done to a transmission without removing and inspecting it and that is why the removal and inspection was recommended as the next step in the repair process. Removing a transmission to inspect it for cause of failure entails many hours and is not completed for $39.95. We are here to provide a thorough service for each customer and expect compensation for the time our technicians put in on each customers vehicle. We are very concerned with complete customer satisfaction and not just customers money and are more than willing to apply the $39.95 towards completion of repairs or additional inspection time that is required.

Revdex.com:At this time, I have not been contacted by AAMCO Transmission regarding complaint ID [redacted].Sincerely,[redacted]

Back in May 2016 I was starting to feel a slight vibration When my 1998 4runner was warmed up, in gear and at a complete stop. I took it to AAMCO in Lemon Grove to have a Power Purge Transmission flush and asked for them to see if they noticed any problems. They said they didn't see any problems so that was that.
Over the next 7 months the vibration increased and a low pitched thrumming sound started to appear. On 12-7-16 I took it back to AAMCO in Lemon Grove and explained the situation and they said they would look at it no charge. When they couldn't find the problem I was told by Jerry further in depth diagnostic would cost $98.00. I agreed to the service.
An hour later I was told my 4runner needed a New timing belt, water pump, timing belt tensioner, timing belt idler, water pump bracket, radiator cap, tensioner bearing, water pump gasket and new coolant. Parts $1163.77. Labor $735.00 Jerry told me these parts needed to be replaced but might not fix the vibration problem I originally brought the vehicle in for. I gave them my okay to do the work.
After this work was done Jerry told me the vibration problem had been fixed. I took the vehicle out for a test drive and realized the vibration problem was still there and now the SUV is leaking coolant. This should have been my first clue that they really didn't know what they were doing, but after further diagnosis by the mechanics I was told It might be the fan clutch causing the vibration and that they would replace that part and the upper radiator hose for only the cost of the parts and no charge for labor so again I agreed to the service.
After the work was done and once again i'm told the vibration problem had been fixed I take the SUV out for a test drive and the vibration with low pitched thrumming is still there.
After informing Jerry of the situation' I and a different mechanic than the one that had been working on my SUV take it out for another test drive. He isolates the problem as something is making the exhaust system is shake and vibrate but is not exactly sure what.
After further inspection i'm told it is probably the motor and transmission mounts and they will replace them with no labor costs. Once again I agree to the service.
The next day i'm told they can't find the correct motor mounts and would have to buy them from Toyota direct at a premium price but the transmission mount has been installed and there is no more vibration.
So once again I test drive and the vibration is still there. That's 3 times they told me the problem had been fixed and 3 times I was lied to.
I understand that my SUV is 18, soon to be 19 years old and a lot of parts are going to wear out and need to be replaced and that the parts AAMCO replaced most likely needed to be replaced and that's the only reason I don't file a complaint and sue them, but to have them tell me 3 times the original problem I brought the SUV in for had been repaired when in fact it had not is very disturbing and goes to prove their incompetence. All that with a lousy 90 day parts and labor warranty.
Oh I didn't mention one of these days I waited 2 hours just for the paperwork after a diagnosis was done and after everything was all said and done I saw that the interior of my SUV had grease spots on the doors and seats and that the Steering wheel, Shift lever and emergency brake were covered in grease.
I Strongly recommend against using AAMCO Lemon Grove`unless you wish to be talked down to and receive terrible service.

We are not here to take advantage of anyone. We do have a tape of [redacted] authorizing the repair, however we will cease repairs and charge for just the towing and inspection.

Revdex.com:
I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to my concern, and find that this resolution is satisfactory to me for the moment.  The vehicle was returned to me late Friday, December 30, 2016.  I noticed on the drive back home (less than 5 miles) that the "brake" condition light came on the dashboard immediately, but I was being followed by my brother in his vehicle and he noted that the driver's side tail light was out.  I felt this was something AAMCO should have seen and addressed with me BEFORE they released the vehicle to me.  I'm now having that brake light repaired elsewhere.Time will tell if the computer that was installed by AAMCO is a decent, usable, reliable one.

We learned that Mr. [redacted] was still having concerns with his Acura so he took his car to his
mechanic: who found two bolts missing and was not shifting properly. He Informed us and was advised
him to return his vehicle to us or another AAMCO for warranty service. He brought his Acura to AAMCO
on Morena Blvd after discussing his frustration. MMCO Corporate who was the original sel'llice
provider authorized AAMCO Morena to repair Mr. [redacted]'s Acura and also provided him with a
loaner car during the repair process.
We are sorry Mr. [redacted] was put though the inconvenience of having to take his car back so many
times for service. We are willing to compensate him for his trouble in consideration for his willingness
to delete his negative comments on YELP and any other public agency.
Mr. [redacted] has stated the Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR) found we committed "Insurance
fraud" for the work authorized by the Marathon Warranty Corporation. The lnvestliatlon by the BAR
found no such fraud and their complaint has been closed.
We would like to put this complaint to bed as the vehicle Is running well and Mr. [redacted] M,arla Is pleased
with the repairs. Kindly let us know what a reasonable settlement with Mr. [redacted] wfll be and his
wlllingness to delete those derogatory reviews.

We had ordered the part from dealer and the dealer would only sell the broken part as one whole piece(housing and actuator rod). The customer was charged for a dealer part and the 2.5 hours labor which included the hour diagnostic that we had spent on finding the problem and the 1.5 hours labor in...

removing the bad part and installing the new part in. I apologize about any misunderstandings but we had advised the customer that there was going to be a diagnostic charge when it involved taking things apart from vehicle. We at aamco repair things by the book and correctly. We discussed the pricing with the customer before proceeding with the work. Upon his agreement and authorization, we completed the work just as promised.

On 12/20/2013, [redacted] presents his 2005 Ford Ranger stating his check engine light is on. Our FREE
Scan of the vehicle reveals two trouble codes;
P0302 cylinder #2 misfire detected
P0316 misfire on startup
Our investigative conclusion...

had many possible causes. It is recommended that the least expensive and
maintenance repairs be done first before recommending major repairs. So it was suggested that a tuneup
be performed in an attempt to correct the trouble code issues. Mr. [redacted] authorized the basis tuneup
ie; spark plugs, spark plug wires and a fuel injection service. (See R.O. 151136 attached)
On 5/30/2014 Mr. [redacted] returns with a check engine light on some 5 months later with a check engine
light on condition. A FREE scan ofthe vehicle found the following trouble codes;
P0300 random misfire detected
P0304 cylinder #4 misfire detected
P0305 cylinder #5 misfire detected
P0306 cylinder #6 misfire detected
P0316 engine misfire on start-up
Since the tune-up had already been done, the diagnostic data source suggests the ignition coil be
replaced since it applies to all cylinders. Mr. [redacted] authorized the ignition coil repair and the codes were
cleared. It was hoped that this last maintenance repair would correct the problem. These repairs are
performed as maintenance rather than recommending major engine repairs first. (See R.O. 151843)
On 6/6/2014 Mr. [redacted] returns again stating that the check engine light is on again and the engine
sputters. Again a FREE scan was performed and the following codes were found;
P030S cylinder #5 misfire detected
P0316 engine misfire on startup (first 1000 revolutions)
We continued to diagnose Mr. [redacted]'s truck without charge and per an in depth engine diagnostic
check. Our technician found air leaks from the lower intake manifold requiring the manifold gaskets be
replaced. We offered Mr. [redacted] a significant discount to perform the intake manifold gasket. We even
offered to have an independent engine mechanic look at Mr. [redacted]'s truck at no cost to him. However
Mr. [redacted] did not return for the inspection.

On 12/312015 We towed in a 2007 Toyota Camry belonging to Ms. [redacted].  The consumer stated "the car does not go forward".  Upon arrival the vehicle was checked in and Repair Order #[redacted] was issued.  It was confirmed by a qualified technician that the problem with the no...

forward condition was caused by an internal transmission problem.  The technician recommended an internal inspection (transmission teardown to determine the cause) Ms. [redacted] was advised that an internal inspection was necessary to determine the cause.  The "teardown" to determine cause of failure was $395.00 and authorzed by Ms. [redacted] on 12/31/15 at 2:12pm and documented.  Once the teardown was completed, Ms. [redacted] was informed of the worn and damaged parts, cost of repair and warranty information.  Authorization for repair was given by Ms. [redacted] on 01/06/2016 at 11:42am and documented on the repair order.  The authorization amount was $3,462.55 plus tax with a 12 month or 12,000 mile warranty whichever comes first.  Ms. [redacted] was advised that a 3 year or 36,000 mile warranty or lifetime warranty was available at an additional charge.  Ms. [redacted] chose the 12 month 12,000 mile warranty and the total with tax was adjusted to not exceed $3,600.00 with tax.  The vehicle was repaired and financing was arranged.  The vehicle was completed and picked up.

This matter is closed.

Revdex.com:
I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to complaint ID [redacted], and have determined that this does not resolve my complaint.  For your reference, details of the offer I reviewed appear below.
I will only agree to bring in the vehicle and have the front seal (pump seal) replaced, as was previously offered by Aamco. If it is not the front (pump) seal that is leaking then the vehicle can be reassembled and refilled (to the correct level) with transmission fluid. I will rescind my complaint with Revdex.com and will consider the matter closed.I will be unable to watch the process due to work, so I will instead request a person acting on my behalf be present to witness the work being done. This person has experience working in auto repair shops, including transmission servicing. I request he be treated with respect, as he will do the same.Again, only the front (pump) seal will be examined/replaced. If it is not this seal that is leaking, then no other examination is required or wanted.I am requesting this work be done in one day, as the person acting on my behalf is doing so as a favor to me. I would like to take up as little of his time as possible. Please provide me with a day and time later this month (August 2016) that is best for you.

transmission concern by the customer and no recommendation was made for transmission repair.
In conclusion, the only work performed was that which Mr. [redacted] requested and authorized. Mr.
[redacted] was very direct in what repairs he wanted and did not want anything more. If there was a
transmission concern, we are more than willing to address that type of repair since It Is our primary
business. Note that no mention of a transmission problem was made by Mr. [redacted] and we did not
identify any transmission Issues.
We hope this response will explain that all the consumer's requests were made and no attempt was
made to sell them more than they requested .

On
October **, 2015, [redacted] brought...

his car 2004 Acura in with a transmission
concern. He was complaining that the transmission was banging on its shifts and
that the fluid smelled burnt. We told [redacted] that we would perform a
multi-point inspection on his vehicle and advise him on what services would be
needed. In February 2014, we had performed previous repairs on [redacted]'s
transmission but he is out of warranty on those services. Since he was beyond
the warranty period we told him that he would have to pay for repairs but would
not be charged for the initial inspection.
Our diagnostic inspection found that the transmission was banging on the shifts
and the fluid had a slightly burnt odor. The vehicle also had a trouble code
stored in the computer – “P0746 – Pressure Control Solenoid A”. Based on these
findings we recommended changing the linear solenoid and performing a
transmission fluid service.
When the repairs were complete, we road tested the vehicle and found the
transmission shifting properly, no banging, and no trouble codes were stored in
the computer. [redacted] paid for and picked up his vehicle on Fri, October
30th.
The following day, [redacted] returned stating that his air intake hose had a
hole and was taped up and had different clamps on it. He said that we should
have told him that it was damaged. When I later asked the technician who worked
on the vehicle about the intake hose, he told me that he could see that the
intake was already broken since it had dust built up the tape. Our technician
he retaped it and put new clamps on it to help the customer.
I told [redacted] that I wasn't aware that the intake was damaged and didn't
think it was damaged by us but offered to replace the part anyway for his
satisfaction. [redacted]'s response was “You think I care about a $30 piece of
rubber I can get at the junk yard?”. I was a bit surprised by his reaction. I
asked if the transmission had a problem or was acting up and he didn't reply to
the question and just said “that is not the issue”. He did not state that the
transmission had a problem. If he did have a problem with the solenoid we
replaced, he would be covered under warranty at any Aamco center.
I am not sure why [redacted] is asking for a refund. His vehicle had a
transmission problem and we repaired it. He did not return to say the
transmission was acting up. When asked, he did not even accuse us of breaking
the air intake. His complaint was that we didn't tell him it was already
broken. It is his rationale to find any fault in our service and justify his
request for a refund. It appears that [redacted] is simply looking for an
opportunity to avoid paying for the repair. As stated earlier, if [redacted] has
an issue with the transmission service we performed, he is welcomed to bring
the vehicle back to us or any Aamco center for repairs under warranty.

Mr. [redacted] had his vehicle towed into our shop and we did a diagnostic on the vehicle.  The vehicle had an internal transmission problem.  There is no repairing an internal transmission problem.  The transmission either has to be rebuilt or replaced.  Mr. [redacted] did not want to...

spend the money to rebuild the transmission.  Since replacing the transmission with a remanufactured transmission would have been more expensive than rebuilding his transmission, the only other option was to find a used transmission.  My manager, [redacted], called several salvage yards to find a used transmission.  To keep the cost at a minimum for Mr. [redacted], we suggested that he use his credit card and purchase the used transmission directly.  If we buy the used transmission, we must mark up the price to cover our overhead and warranties.  Mr. [redacted] talked to the salvage yard and purchased the transmission with his own credit card while he was in our front office over the phone.  Any decisions about what type of warranty is a discussion between Mr. [redacted] and the salvage yard.  ([redacted] Auto)  Never at any time did we make a photocopy of Mr. [redacted]'s credit card. (When [redacted] called Mr. [redacted] to let him know that the vehicle was ready for pick up, Mr. [redacted] gave [redacted] a credit card number over the phone, but when we tried to charge the card, the transaction would not go through.)  [redacted] Auto shipped the transmission to us and we did a labor only installation.  That means that our warranty extends to the labor of taking the transmission out and replacing it with the used transmission.  When Mr. [redacted]'s transmission failed once he returned to Omaha, the warranty was through [redacted] Auto.  They have offered to ship another used transmission to Omaha.  Mr. [redacted] did not purchase a used unit with labor warranty, so only the transmission itself is under warranty.  In talking to the AAMCO Center in Omaha, and AAMCO's Corporate Office, we have decided that it is only good customer service to replace Mr. [redacted]'s transmission at no cost, even though we are under no obligation to do so.  We have arranged for [redacted] Auto to ship their replacement transmission to the AAMCO Center located at [redacted], and they will replace the transmission and bill our center.

I took my 2004 Mitsubishi Galant on Thursday Dec. 10th, to be inspected for transmission problems (it was rebuilt it 2 mos. ago and has under 250 miles on such rebuilt by another party) So, I was not expecting to be a big and expensive fix! I went here moved by an add that said" AAMCO check and tells you what's wrong with your car for free" (TV or online don't remember) They said, it will be $395.00 charge to inspect(open it) and after checking it they will tell me what's wrong and how much that will be. Before that I called same location and Ball Mitsubishi and I was informed that a transmission fix ranged from $1,800.00 to $ 2,500.00. Like I said before I was expecting such repair to be no more than $1,000.00 due to the previous repair, but to my dismay, today Monday Dec. 14th they called me to tell me a very long list of "problems" including: a pump, solenoids box, new clutch, and many other parts to be more $4,300.00 then minus a "special discount and a 10% for AAA members and applying my initial payment of $395.00, my due payment for the "repair" will be, $2,700.00. I accepted because this is the car we use to go to work(wife and I) I complained about the price and I mentioned(again)that the transmission was rebuilt it 2 mos. ago and that we drove it for less than 250 miles so, it couldn't be a need for such a big repair! They said" well driving it with a faulty pump will give your transmission great damage" to "help me" they hooked me up with a financial party that gave me $3.000.00 credit for 6 mos. with no interest. They also said to me with the initial call, that a rebuilt transmission job was 20 hours (3 days) and as you can see, from Thursday Dec. 10th to Tuesday Dec. 15th(that's what they promised and still to be confirmed ) it's a total of 5 days or 40 work hours! That's not good!

I am rejecting this response because:I was told the scanning for simple engine light does not cost $120. I was told to scan the light cost $30 to $120, so I was charged $120 for check into something I did not ask for. Over all AAMCo scammed me. They advertised for free engine light check they get people in, then they charged all kind of fee, the perform other inspections not ask the customer then get charged for it. In sort, AAMCo scammed people
