AAMCO Transmissions Peoria Reviews (1)

On 1/12/16 I drove my vehicle to the Aamco located at [redacted] to have my transmission fixed. At the time, nothing else was wrong with any part of my vehicle, just the transmission. I previously had been saving to have a third party mechanic rebuild the transmission once the vehicle reached around 125,000 miles, but it started to have mechanical issues before I could do so. I ended up having to take my vehicle to this particular Aamco after learning that the third party mechanic that I was going to have work on it had become ill. The repairs seemed to be minor at the time (such as the seals and the clutch disc needing to be replaced) as the problem only happened when the vehicle was cold and would drive completely fine once it was warmed up. Since the transmission only acted up while the vehicle was cold, Aamco kept the vehicle overnight so they could assess the problem in the morning. They informed me on 1/13/16 that the transmission definitely needed to be rebuilt and I gave them the ok to do so. It took five days from 1/13/16 to 1/18/16 to let me know that it would costs us $2276.01 to rebuild the transmission. They also informed me, at that time, that they did not get a chance to start rebuilding the transmission yet, because they had been very busy and unable to get to it. Meanwhile, this is my sole transportation and my significant other has medical issues that requires him to see a doctor monthly. I finally got my vehicle back on 1/23/16 at approximately 1:30 p.m. with the original transmission still in it having only some of the hard and the soft parts rebuilt. According the Aamco, these were the only parts that needed to be rebuilt at the time. However, the transmission now had an aggressive shake in it, which was not there before I took the vehicle into them, and according to Aamco could not be fixed by them at the time. They told me not to worry about the shake because the vehicle is under warranty and I still need to bring my vehicle back after 10 days anyway for a follow-up check.

When I came back on 2/5/16 for the 10 day follow-up check it still had the an aggressive shake in the transmission (which according to my observation, got worse) and a gulf ball size dent in the transmission pan. At the end of the 10-day follow-up test drive, Steve at Aamco (who is the owner and the person I have been dealing with this entire time) gave the vehicle what is called a torque test where you push on the brake while gently pushing on the gas. However, Steve held down the brake and gunned the gas and I heard the engine jump off the motor mount giving evidence that the motor mount broke. After the torque test was done the first time, my significant other said to Steve "Please don't do that again", knowing from past experience that doing so could cause damage to the fan and shroud because the engine moves a substantial amount. Steve then proceeded to push on the brake and gas three more times while my significant other kept telling him to stop. He informed me that it was ok and that this was normal procedure. After asking other mechanics, they said yes this is how you check the transmission, but not to the extent that he did it. I was also informed that it could burn up the torque converter by doing this test in this manner. Because of his negligence by performing the torque test incorrectly on my vehicle, the motor mount broke and the power steering hoses and ground strap got ripped loose. Thus, causing them to need repair. After the follow-up 10 day test drive, I was on my way home and almost they’re when there was a pop in the transmission rendering the vehicle un-drivable. Aamco then had it towed back to their shop and once again had to repair the transmission. This time they had the vehicle for 13 days. According to Aamco's diagnosis, the planetary gear went out causing the particles to go through the torque converter, which caused it to fail. The reason why the planetary gear went out is because they did not clean all the debris out the first time they tried to rebuild the transmission. While they had our transmission they did replace the motor mount and give me a used, but undented transmission pan. Once I got my vehicle back the 2nd time on 2/18/16, the car still had an aggressive shake in the transmission and an aggressive scratch while shifting into 2nd gear when it was cold. I was told to give the computer a chance to adjust to the rebuilt transmission. In addition to the above issues, the heater hoses that connected through the firewall to the heater core had been broke off where they tried to connect it back together so they could hide the fact that they had been broken. I discovered the break in the heater hoses approximately three days later when it continued to leak aggressively causing my passenger to complain that their feet were wet. After informing Aamco that this had been damaged, they took no responsibility to reimburse me for the $1,200.00 repairs, which had to be fixed before I could continue to drive the vehicle. The a/c also had been affected which caused it to have to be repaired as well. In addition, someone took a die grinder and cut a 4" slice in my fuel filter bracket, took one of two bolts out of the bracket, loosening the existing bolt up which appeared that the purpose was to make the bracket fall off. Thus, hiding the evidence of the damage to the bracket,

On 3/25/16 I had to drive the vehicle to the bank to do business, while driving there the vehicle began to malfunction. I barely made it to the bank, where it took approximately 15 minutes to complete my business, before returning to my vehicle. When I returned and started it, the check engine and ABS light illuminated immediately indicating that there was a problem. After this, the vehicle was still drivable, but would only shift into 1st gear, which made it, take an extremely long time to get home. Once I arrived at home, I checked the vehicle on the computer and three transmission codes appeared on the computer all stating that something was wrong with the transmission. By this time, not only was I exhausted of taking my vehicle back and forth to Aamco to try and get the transmission fixed, but also my significant other was extremely ill due to a medication that the doctor started prescribing him to take. Which I informed Steve prior to this time that he was going to start taking and that I was unsure of all the side effects that the medication was going to cause him. Steve then assured me that I have come to the right place and that he would be caring and understanding towards my significant other’s situation and if there was anything he could do for me, please do no hesitate to ask. Which in no way has he honored what he said. So I decided that on Monday (3/28/16), that I was going to call the corporate office in Pennsylvania to try and get the vehicle towed to another Aamco that is closer and one that can repair the problems permanently. I was unable to contact them until Tuesday, 03/29/16 due to the time difference from the east to west coast. I spoke to Mike, the director, who stated that he would need to call and speak to the owner at this Aamco located at 14131 N. Rio Vista Blvd, Peoria, AZ 85381, to see if he would be willing to let another shop work on it. Steve at Aamco then called me promptly back, instead of the director, and stated why did you call corporate and not inform me of the situation first. The answer to that question is because I knew that he would not be helpful and to make a long story short, he was not. He then informed me that he wanted me to give him another chance to fix the problem. I reluctantly agreed and the vehicle was once again towed back to this location on 3/29/16. I also informed him that the vehicle needed to be repaired as soon as possible because I need to go through emissions by 4/15/16. This information did not seem to make a difference because as of 4/4/16 they still had not even found out what, if anything was wrong with the transmission. Even though, Steve informed me that he would work on the vehicle Saturday and Sunday and have it back to me by Monday (4/4/16). But yet according to them they are professionals. Since my significant other was still taking medication that is making him extremely ill and he was worried that he may have to go to the hospital because of it, I informed Steve at Aamco that I would like to tow my vehicle home in case something serious happens to him. He was reluctantly to let me take the vehicle at first, but then stated that it was ok for me to have it towed home. I did not feel comfortable leaving it there while my significant other was in the hospital. The vehicle cost $101.00 to tow back home. Steve at Aamco informed me that he thought that whatever was wrong with the vehicle was probably electrical. Since the vehicle only has a 90 day warranty on electrical parts, it seemed to me the he was holding the vehicle on purpose until the warranty was up so that he could charge me for the repairs and cause me to have to pay late charges for not taking it to emissions on time. Once again, when I got my vehicle back this 3rd time there was at least $1000.00 worth of damage done to it, including the fact that it was still not drivable. The dip stick retainer clip for the transmission, which is used to check the transmission fluid level, was broken off, there was a cut from what appeared to be a screw driver in the driver's side arm rest and the torsion bar cross member had been smashed causing the vehicle to pull to the right making it necessary to buy a new bracket and get the front end realigned (the bracket costs around $500.00).

All of the damages done to my vehicle from beginning to end are as follows:

1/23/16 - An aggressive shake in the transmission and a gulf ball size dent in the transmission pan.

2/5/16 - Broken motor mount, power steering and ground strap ripped loose from engine.

2/18/16 – Aggressive scratch in 2nd gear, both heater hoses broken, a/c compressor and dryer needed replaced, 4” slice in fuel filter, and one of two bolts missing from fuel filter bracket.

3/29/16 – Broken dip stick retainer clip used to check the transmission fluid, cut from screw driver in driver’s side arm rest, and smashed torsion bar cross member.

To the best of my knowledge, now that the vehicle is back in my possession, the total damages done to the vehicle, in addition to the price to rebuild the transmission, is approximately $6000.00. In the beginning, I informed Steve at Aamco that my significant other had medical problems, we were a fixed income and have been saving for quite sometime to have the transmission rebuilt when the vehicle reach 125,000 miles. I also informed him in the meantime, that the transmission started to have problems before I got a chance to bring it to him. Remember the only reason I brought the vehicle here was to fix the transmission.

Finally On April 8, 2016 my mechanic friend got over being sick so I had my son take it to him to find out why it was still not running. After searching, he discovered that where the wire harness plugged into the top of the motor one of the pins had been shoved out, So in the beginning it had a connection, but after driving it for several miles with the vibration in the transmission, it became completely unplugged causing the check engine and ABS light to come on. So our third party mechanic pushed the pin back into the connection causing the check engine light and ABS light to go back out. On this same plug in, Aamco broke the plastic insert that holds it on and instead of fixing it they just replaced it with a wire tie. Once my third party mechanic fixed the check engine and ABS light, the transmission began to function again, but still had an aggressive scratch in 2nd gear when it is cold. It is nice to know that this is how they treat someone who not only trusted them to fix their vehicle right, but also may now not have the money to fix whatever else they have damaged or destroyed while having the vehicle in their possession. For more evidence as to how another Aamco treats one of our veterans, who fights for our freedom, check out this [redacted]. If they did it to someone who puts their life on the line for our freedom, they will definitely do it to you! I would definitely not recommend anyone to take their vehicle Aamco to have their transmission repaired/rebuilt, or even their oil changed, there is no telling what else might need fixed once you do so. Even if they offered to bring my vehicle back to have what they damaged on my vehicle repaired, I would not trust them to fix it, would you?

Sincerely,

Unsatisfied Aamco Customer
