Complaint: ***
I am rejecting this response because: I was NEVER offered or shown my old converter EVERThe associate *** or *** said they had to hold the part just in case they were to get audited by EPAAn employee at my job had work done there and she was shown her old part before she paid for her serviceI was NEVER shown any part and NEVER offeredI was just told "Your part is still here just incase EPA comes and audits us"That is when I asked how would EPA know it was my part and they indicated they would know due to the part number on the converter would match a number on my vehicle
Why would I try to get out of paying $for the sensors when I gladly paid $for a converterI took my car you tested you ordered the part it came in the next day and that day I took my vehicle inSo without hesitation I paid American Muffler $so again why would I decline to pay $I declined because of what I was told that is the problem hereI specifically asked could it be anything else and asked you guys to check my other lights and American muffler stated it could not be any other issue than another code for the other converter
There are other complaints on Revdex.com regarding issues with parts, but the public is unable to view due to an unknown reason as it only states issue with partsI did take my vehicle to other local businesses and was told the part was not new and one shop showed me the certificate that comes with the converter which I was not givenI am not going to name those business at this time, but I can assure I did take them to multiple ones
I am well aware how long you have been in business as that is why I took my vehicle to American MufflerBut I would have never thought I would be treated or talk to this way implying that I am a liar in not taking my vehicle to other shops and that I am trying to get out of paying for a serviceI will pass along the way I am being treated as a customer with American Muffler
There are many regulations below that were not metI did not receive a warranty information card completed by the installerAmerican Muffler did not explain why the converter needed to be replaced other than the diagnostic test gave the code for a converterThey never went under the car to make sure that was the issue other going under there when replacing the converterI was not informed of my rights and restrictions. The invoice does not include my personal information nor my vehicle's information
Besides installing aftermarket converters only in the situations outlined in response to
question (6), other requirements and restrictions also apply
These include completely documenting the need for converter replacement, properly installing the correct one on the vehicle, and informing
the customer of his rights and certain restrictions
Specifically, these requirements are as follows:
(1) If the replacement is not required by a State or local program, both customer and installer must sign a statement concerning why the converter was replaced
(Manufacturers either provide such a statement with the converter or have an example in their catalogs.)
(2) If the replacement is required by a State or local program, the installer must keep a copy of the statement or order by the program representative
(3) The invoice for replacement must include the customer's name and complete address, and the vehicle's make, model year, and mileage, as well as the reason for replacement
(4) Retain copies of the above invoices and statements for months and the replaced converters for days (converters must be identified or marked as to which customer's car they came from)
(5) Install the converter in the same location as the original
(6) Install the same type of converter as the original (oxidation, 3-way, or 3-way-plusoxidation (dual-bed))This information is sometimes available on the emission tulabel or from the manufacturer's application catalog
(7) Install the proper converter for the vehicle as determined and specified by the converter manufacturerThere are engine size and vehicle weight limitations which make it inappropriate to install certain converters on certain vehiclesNewer vehicles
with On-Board Diagnostic (OBD) systems may not always operate properly with certain aftermarket productsTherefore, the catalog should always be consulted for the correct application
(8) The converter must always be properly connected to any existing air injection components
(9) Install all the other required converters the vehicle would have originally come with unless the converter manufacturer has stated in writing that the aftermarket converter is designed to replace more than one converter
(10) For new aftermarket converters, the installer must fill out the warranty information card supplied by the manufacturer and give it to the vehicle owner or operator

In response to the complaint ID: [redacted] came to our auto repair shop on July 24, 2014 saying she needed a catalytic converter.
We checked it on our computer analyzer and it did show a PO420 catalytic converter code. We gave her an estimate of $550.00 and she...

agreed so we ordered the part number 641240 and installed the firewall side converter. This particular model of [redacted] has two converters, one on the firewall side and one on the radiator side. We called her to let her know we replaced the converter and ran the computer test again. This time the computer showed the O2 censor was bad and would cost about $280.00. She declined and picked up her vehicle.  The computer does not list multiple problems during analysis. It will only show one code at a time and the converter code came up first. The customer came back in saying “other people said we did not change the part”. She did not identify who the “other people” were and I noticed in the complaint she filed with you she did not identify who she took her car to. She referred to “an Auto place” which said the converter was not new and not replaced. She also said she “took her vehicle to different mechanics and was told it was not new”. What auto place and who are these mechanics she claimed to take her car to? When she came back telling us she had been told the part was not new I offered to show her the old converter. At  the time we still had the old converter but we routinely  dispose of old converters when the dealer comes around. After seven weeks, the converter has been disposed of.

If she did in fact take her car to another shop and/or other mechanics they may have looked at the radiator side converter which is still the old original part.
If she took it to another shop, then why did she need to go to “different mechanics” and have them tell her the same thing. We believe she does not want to pay $280.00 for the O2 censor and she is trying to get us to replace it for free.

We have been in business here in Kerrville for over 36 years and we have an impeccable reputation. We would never treat a customer the way she has said we treated her.
