I scheduled a routine cleaning appointment with Accent Dental during a short stay in Houston. During the exam they told me that I had periodontal disease and needed an in-depth, below the gum line cleaning followed by a treatment of antibiotics also to be administered under the gum line. They told me that without this immediate treatment, I was in danger of my teeth falling out due to a retraction of my gums and an infection in my jaw bone. I had no symptoms prior to this visit (no bleeding gums, no sore or loose teeth, no indications of a bigger problem). Shortly after the appointment I relocated back to Phoenix AZ and did a follow up with my family dentist. Two weeks before my follow up in AZ, I asked Accent Dental to send my records via email to my family dentist. They never arrived. My family dentist told me that there was no evidence of gum or periodontal disease and that the procedure that I was billed for should have taken 4x as long as it did. He also said that even if my teeth were as bad as they had claimed, I could have used a prescription for much cheaper antibiotic tablets rather than injecting them below the gum line (no other treatment options had been brought up by Accent Dental). My family dentist took X-rays 3 weeks after my visit to Accent Dental and said he had absolutely no evidence of gum or periodontal Disease. He was shocked at the price and lack of service I received for an apparently non-existent disease. I believe that Accent Dental used scare tactics to justify the procedure. According to my family dentist, a perio-scale and root plane should take an hour per quadrant. It took 40 minutes to clean my entire mouth and apply the antibiotics. I feel that not only did I over pay for services, but that these services also weren't preformed properly. I feel that the exam and X-rays for $80 was reasonable but the additional $800 for "cleaning and antibiotics" was entirely unnecessary.
