Review: I called Jim from Acme last year to have a liner put in my chimney because there was a crack in the chimney and could not be used safely. I was placed on a waiting list and waited 3 months for the liner to be placed. Acme from Harrisonburg had to come to do the work as Jim over booked my date. In hindsight due to the crack very noticiable at the top of the chimney a liner should have been placed to prevent a fire. The men installing "did not see it", and Jim was aware of the crack. According to Jim a liner should have been placed and was never discussed with me. I had a chimney sweep come out and tell me that the liner should be wrapped. I spoke with Jim who wanted to charge me another 400.00 to have the guys make a service call plus the cost of the liner. They should have put the liner on when they were here originally, therefore not costing me another service fee. Jim stated it is Va code to have a liner with a crack in the chimney. I had the work done by another company. When they pulled the liner out there was an area where there was fire in the liner should have been insulated. Putting me at risk of losing my home. I have asked on several occasions for the warranty of the liner to no avail, Jim is always with a customer and does not return your call. I had to pay the other company the 400.00 dollars to make the service call as I was afraid to use acme again. There would not have been another 400.00 dollars service call if the job was done correctly the first time. I have pictures of the the obvious crack at the top of the chimney if you need them.Desired Settlement: Return of 400.00 for service call .

My warranty.

Review: ACME entered into a verbal contract to replace the EXISTING chimney steel liners in two chimneys at my residence located at [redacted] on 9/15/15. Their representative quoted a price of $699 per insert for materials and a cost of $600 per chimney to REPLACE the existing steel inserts. The total verbal quote was $2,600 which I agreed to and paid a deposit of $500 via credit card. The agreed upon installation date was October 11, 2015. The actual installation date was a month later.

The ACME installation crew dispatched installed the first steel liner without incident as there was no insert in the chimney to replace. The crew proceeded to the second chimney and complained about the removal of the existing steel insert. They developed a fictional story about the liner being cemented into the chimney, saying it would be impossible to remove. The installation crew called their office, reported their story and apparently received permission to move to the next job. The crew told me the insert was cemented in all the way down the chimney and only a professional company could remove it. They suggested structural issues probably existed with the chimney and this job was beyond their capability. I investigated the chimney with a flash light and found the story to be FALSE. I contacted the store manager with no results. I then spent about two hours removing the steel insert by myself, contacted the Charlottesville store and had the crew dispatched. The crew returned the next day. They again had trouble routing the new liner. The crew was again stymied and asked for assistance having arrived with minimal tools. Without doubt, ACME is in BREACH of its contract and that is the reason for NOT receiving full payment. Their contract was to REMOVE and REPLACE two (2) steel 6 inch diameter chimney inserts. The contract did not specify the homeowner would remove the existing chimney inserts nor assist in their installation.Desired Settlement: Acme has been contacted by phone twice and apprised of the complaint and the reason for withholding $300. I just received a letter dated January 29, 2016 from Acme Stove and Fireplace identifying a payment due of $372.09. In my opinion, they are in breach of their contract by not fulfilling the entire service promised for the price quoted. As a former USAF Base Engineer, when a company did not fulfill their contract the Government retained a portion of the payment. I would think a government by the people and for the people would be afforded the same right. I am asking for the $372.09 to not be paid to ACME. You should further be advised they have relocated to [redacted]. Contact phone [redacted]
