I know I had termite damage to a garage wall and had already removed peg board and drywall. I was not in a panic by any stretch of the imagination. I called Mr. Rugg and he informed me he was on a job within 5 min. drive of my home and would be over when it was completed. He was there within 30 min. of my call requesting an inspection. At no time during our phone call did he mention an inspection fee. He came to my house and spent about 30 min. inspecting the termite tunnels looking for live bugs and came to the same conclusion I did. There were no live bugs and that my previous spraying for bugs had killed them off.
Prior to Mr. Rugg leaving I asked him about treating the wall once I had a carpenter replace a support post. He verbally quoted me a $250.00 price for treating the wall with boric acid, after the post was replaced and before I put the peg board and drywall back.
At no time did Mr. Rugg mention an inspection fee. I have had numerous contractors come out for estimates on work for my house, from tree services to electricians. When doing improvements or maintenance to my house I try to get three estimates, looking for not just the lowest price, but also who will do the best job.
The only time I was aware that Mr. Rugg was going to charge an inspection fee is when I received the bill in the mail.
I will not be paying Mr. Rugg.
When I called Mr. Rugg regarding the bill he continually talked over me and lied to me when I said there was no mention of an inspection fee. After I repeated our encounter to him on the phone he told me it was my responsibility to have asked. Sorry, but if I were to do a job or inspection for someone I would be upfront about my fees.
Again, I hope Mr. Rugg learns from this and is more up front about his fees, and I will not be paying him anything.
