I am not a denturist, I am a Dentist. Immediate dentures are made from impressions of a patient who has existing teeth. These impressions are then poured in dental stone to create models of the patient's mouth. These models are then mounted on an articulator and modified by removing the "teeth", "soft tissue" and "bone" often based on the directions of the surgeon performing the surgery. A new set of teeth with soft tissue and bone replacement are then created based on that model. In my office, this process is typically done as part of an entire treatment plan which involves the surgery as well as the prosthetic replacement. This treatment plan is reviewed with the patient and a written signed consent to have the procedure is gained. Only after the patient gives signed consent does the work begin to create this prosthesis. Typically, payment in full is taken at this point as the new set of teeth are made in advance of the surgery to allow the patient to not have to go without teeth - again a choice made by the patient. Occasionally, in an effort to make it as convenient as possible for the patient, payment is not collected at this point. At times, a patient may change their mind and call prior to the surgery and elect not to proceed with the signed treatment plan. Of course, if the new set of teeth have already been made, then the patient is responsible for payment of these teeth that the patient requested we create. The fees for these teeth are established based on extensive local market research and are available in our written fee schedule. Typically, in order to ensure everyone is treated the same, fees are not increased or discounted. Finally, Oral Surgeons do not create immediate dentures. They are made by other professionals and typically brought to the surgery for placement. The statement "I wont be able to use his dentures ever" is incorrect. This process is common, occurring hundreds, if not thousands of times each day. Confusion can typically arise when a patient tries to gain knowledge from sources outside of the profession and this is understandable. However, this confusion should not reflect on the reputation of establishment or the professional. This office only bills for procedures that have been completed. This office only charges the amounts listed in our fee schedule. This office only begins treatment following proper informed consent and approval.
