Affordable Plumbing & Heating Reviews (5)

I needed a plumber at 4:45pm on a weekday when the pipes under my kitchen sink separated, sending gallons of water down into the space beneathI called Affordable Plumbing, and MrHagen came over immediately, even though he'd been heading home for the day when I calledHe was courteous, he was fast, and he was thoroughI was incredibly impressed, both with his professionalism, and his kindness, even though he'd put in a full day's work before he got my panicked callThank you!

I think there's a reason this guy is available at the drop of a hat -- I doubt he gets repeat business. He thinks customers should pay $85/hour for him to go to the store to buy basic tools of the trade (caulk). He would have left my FUNCTIONING sump pump system unassembled with the pit open had I not asked him to close it up and put it back together (problem was with the backup pump's battery but left the backup pump completely unpowered). He tried to convince me to buy a 24 volt charger for a 12-volt battery, which is a great way to have a battery explode. He doesn't carry a battery tester, and he thinks that a voltmeter is adequate to test a battery (it can show an obviously bad one but not one that's only got a bad cell or two). He charged his hourly rate for his time driving to my house as an after-the-fact trip charge, even though his answer to my inquiry of his rate structure was just a flat hourly rate for his work. And he acted like it was unusual for me to be surprised by that. I've been a homeowner for 10 years, buddy. I have no idea what his partner was doing, when I got home after my roommate let him in they were just sitting in the basement waiting and doing nothing. Not even cleaning up some of the mess they made getting into my sump pump (which was sealed with caulk). Not even doing a simple test to check if the sump pump would function with the floater put back into the correct position. I had to ASK THEM TO CHECK THE PUMP. I think they were just trying to rack up billable hours while they thought the responsible party wouldn't know (a roommate had let them in and surreptitiously told me to come supervise). I think he thought he could just rip of some woman who wasn't foolish enough to let him talk her into replacing an entire sump pump system just because the backup's battery was on the fritz, or sell her a whole new backup battery+tender when all I needed was a new battery. The primary system's floater had just needed adjustment. What a total waste of my time and my money. I'll stick with J [redacted] L [redacted] Plumbing, who I've used before and been happy with.

Review: I called Affordable Plumbing at 3:09 this afternoon at the suggestion of another plumber who was not available. They arrived approximately 30 minutes later and proceeded to snake my downstairs commode for about an hour and a half or so. Once done I was given a bill for $591.00. Appalled at the extraordinary price, I spoke with the owner, [redacted], and was told I was being charged emergency, after hour fees as my service call was after 3:30. I was not informed of this when I initially contacted Affordable Plumbing and Heating and in no way appreciate being ripped off like this. I am, myself, in the construction industry and made several phone calls upon his departure. I was informed that snaking my drain should have cost around $300.00, certainly not $591.00....almost twice the cus[redacted]ary amount! I in no way appreciate being taken advantage of simply because I am not accus[redacted]ed to doing business with a shady, dishonest company!Desired Settlement: I would like a partial refund.

In addressing complaint by [redacted]. [redacted] she called us at 3:08p.m. and said that she had an emergency. Service call ran into evening hours. We were there for 2 1/2 hr. not 1 1/2. We snaked two toilets, but before we even started snaking had to remove feces that were all the way to the top of the toilet . We had problems snaking that toilet tried several times and ended up having to go underneath crawl space to adjust some pipe that was directed the wrong way. Started snaking again and pulled back sanitary knapkins., finally cleared. Then we did the upstairs bathroom and cleared. When we finished the job we presented her with the bill and asked if there were any questions about it she didn't complain at that time. She called back later for breakdown of the bill, we told her and said our goodbye's. If you found other plumbers that gave you a lower price then why didn't you get them in the first place. Getting another plumber that could do what we had to do on that job after hours good luck with that. Not every plumbers going to give the same price unless they want to make us look bad. The cost will stay the same, everything was done in a professional way. Not many plumbers would have Shop Vac the feces out of your toilet before they even start the job. It was two stoppages in the house and used two different types of snaking equipment.

We could have given you prices when you called but you didn't ask all you were saying that you had a emergency and it's hard to give a ball park figure when you can't see what's going on until you get on the job. Every job is differend other plumbers should know that. Ninety Eight % of the people that call us ask prices which you didn't. We would have addressed that question had it been asked up front.

In summary the job was done in a professional manor, you seemed okay with everything. I can't believe you had the gall to call us shady. We've had our own company for several years now and this is the first complaint we've ever had

Review: [redacted]

I am rejecting this response because:

First and foremost, two commodes were not snaked. One commode was snaked and one commode was plunged.... with my plunger, for about 3 minutes. . Secondly, I too own a service company and do not charge $300 per hour after 3:30 p.m., as I was told, after the fact, by the owner of your company, [redacted]. Thirdly, sanitary napkins were not the cause of the back up, I believe a tampon was found. It should in no way have taken 2 1/2 hours to plunge out a tampon! And even if it did, to charge $300 per hour is unconscionable, as you well know. Regardless of how long you have been in business or how many public complaints have "not" been made, I am 100% dissatisfied with what I was charged for a basic back up.....something you should have been able to resolve in less than an hour, certainly not over 2 hours! Again I must reiterate...charging $300 per hour after 3:30 is ridiculous, and not being informed of this at 3:08 when I initially called is unprofessional and unacceptable. I'm going to need a partial refund. Had I called you at 8:00pm on a Saturday, I would expect a slight price increase....but at 3:00 on a weekday? Not cool.

Regards,
