Steve G[redacted] of Affordable Restoration LLC responds as follows to the complaint of [redacted]:

The complaint attached is just not a correct statement of what happened.  [redacted] was not even present during the project except for 2 or 3 times as she...

lives far away.

Taking advantage of an elderly widow of a disabled war veteran would be terrible, but I did not do that.  I am sure people do that but I didn’t.  Rather, so far as I know, the only complaint is the irregular color of stain on the deck I built for [redacted] and [redacted].

As for talking the [redacted]s into the deck work, what happened was that when we were talking about iron railings for the front and back entry doors as requested by the Seattle VA, [redacted] asked me to inspect the deck. [redacted] had fallen through the deck in 1981 and one of her daughters had fallen again just recently.  I fell through it even while carefully inspecting it. It was obviously in bad shape.  I have a letter from her to [redacted], saying what a good job I did and how thankful she was to [redacted] for the wonder veteran discount.  I had requested assistance from [redacted] in the form of a material discount. The owner, [redacted], offered his cost without even batting an eye. [redacted] sold the lumber at cost for the [redacted]s, because of [redacted]’s veteran status and disability.

I attach pictures of that deck, showing the completed work.

I built the deck for the [redacted]s last year, and was paid for it in full in October.  At that time, all of the work was done, except that the deck was not stained.  This was because the winter was coming on and the staining would have to wait until this spring. The decking material was still wet from the lumber yard. I promised the [redacted]'s that because they paid me I full in October, I would finish the staining this spring. Full payment was voluntary by the [redacted]'s, not required or requested.

And that is exactly what I did.  I stained it on April 21st.  I was asked to have the deck completed by May 1st because they were going to list the house for sale. I followed the product instructions (manufacturer:  [redacted]) exactly and, to me, the deck looks great.  The manufacturer’s instructions say to only apply one coat to new decks.  I attached a copy of those instructions.

Now, it can be seen from the pictures that the grain and irregularities in the wood show through the stain.  That is just the way that stain is.  As I say, I followed the manufacturer’s instructions and only one coat should be used on new decks.  Now, [redacted], writing for her mother, says I should put on a second coat.

[redacted] also says to complete the job to the family’s satisfaction.  I do not know that can be done. To the family’s satisfaction is subjective. The old deck was painted with a solid color for 30 plus years. The new deck looks different. They did not wish to hide or cover the beautiful wood grain of the brand new deck. That is why the [redacted]'s chose to have the deck stained with a semi-solid product.

I propose, instead, to meet at the site with a [redacted]’s representative.  Then, we can see what can or should be done – if anything.

As for an apology, I did not treat [redacted] in a disgraceful manner and I did not take advantage of her.  I am afraid that with her husband of 62+ years being recently deceased, she wishes she hadn’t had the work done and is now striking out at me for doing it. I am also a little confused because I was told that the house was going to be put on the market once Mr. & Mrs. [redacted] were required by the Seattle VA to move into a full time medical assistance facility with round the clock care. I competed the staining of the deck within the requested timeline based on the date they were listing the home for sale as stated above.

I treated the [redacted]'s as if they were my own family! On two occasions, I was invited to sit and eat fresh baked apple pie and ice cream at their kitchen table with [redacted] and [redacted] because they were so pleased with our work ethic and the quality with which we execute our work.

My reputation is very important to me, and [redacted] and, to some extent, her mother, are trashing it.  Unfairly.

I have included 8 Letters of Recommendation from 2007 to current, including the letter written by [redacted]. I believe his shows the consistency, honor and integrity in which I conduct my business.
