I have attached the Q&A sheet that I share with all customers. Below please find some additional helpful information:
The problem of automobile and truck tires leaving scuff marks on new asphalt pavement is a problem that crops up every summer, particularly during long stretches of hot humid weather and, from time to time engineers are asked to comment on the causes and seriousness of this problem.
The problem is generally of a temporary and superficial nature. Tire scuffing generally only affects the top 1/16" to 3/16" of the pavement surface. It is always caused by a fairly concentrated maneuver or rotation of a tire in a stationary or braking mode.
There are several conditions under which the degree of tire scuffing will vary. Some are as follows:
THE AGE OF THE PAVEMENT - The newer the pavement, the softer the asphalt binder which holds the aggregate together. As the pavement ages with time (generally within two years) the asphalt binder near the surface becomes harder and practically resists all tire scuffing about two years after being placed. The initial softness (within limits) is a good property for the pavement to have as this aids in the overall durability of the pavement.
THE TIME OF THE YEAR - The scuffing on a pavement that is placed in the fall of the year (September on) which doesn't have the opportunity to become very hot and susceptible to scuffing will tend to harden more over the winter months and be less susceptible to scuffing then a pavement that is placed in the early spring (late March to mid June) where the asphalt cement is newer and has not had a chance yet to age harden under the severe winter conditions as much as those placed in the fall.
HEAT INTENSITY AND WEATHER CONDITIONS - Under sustained periods of sunshine, which heats the pavement to a range of 140* to 160* combined with very humid weather, the asphalt cement in a new pavement will become almost fluid. Again, as this pavement hardens with age, the condition will decrease.
VEHICULAR WEIGHT - The weight of a vehicle will determine how much weight is on each tire. This can be substantial, whether considering small cars with small tires or big trucks with big tires, however, these combinations can sometimes develop very high pressure intensity on the pavement.
VEHICULAR OPERATION - Probably the most significant factor affecting tire scuffing is the mode of operation that the vehicle user places on the pavement. Stationary 180* turns with a heavy or light vehicle that has power steering, can make a substantial scuff on a new pavement. A sharp turning maneuver, at the same time braking is occurring, can do significant scuffing as well. Once again, trucks, SUV's and other heavy adn long-wheel-base vehicles make significant marks.
CONCLUSION -- Tire scuffing on new asphalt pavements is generally minor, and while it looks very severe on a brand new pavement, one would have a difficult time actually finding these locations one year into the life of the pavement, and a little understanding of what contributed to this problem and some care and concern to avoid its occurence will go a long way to minimizing it, or eliminating it altogether. The new asphalt must go through hot and cold weather before the tire scuffing will disappear. Remember, all new asphalt surfaces in most cases should scuff in some way otherwise the material is too hard.
Thank you again for your attention to this matter.

Review: We had Airoldi Paving install a new driveway at our residence. After installation, we waited 4 days to use the driveway - 1 day more than Airoldi Paving requests. Shortly thereafter, our vehicles began leaving tire tracks in the asphalt. The tread patterns are very obvious. I contacted [redacted], one of their field representatives and the person I had dealt with up this point and his first response was to blame us for "turning our tires". He also said it was the weight of my SUV and then he blamed the heat. Well, we have no reason to turn our tires as that would cause us to drive into the grass. Also, the tread patterns would be smeared. They're not. Secondly, as to the heat, we had the driveway installed in late April or early May, the problem began immediately and it's been one of the coolest summers in a long time. As to the vehicle weight, my SUV has a weight of under 4200 lbs (2009 [redacted]), so it's on the small side. Our car is a [redacted], which also leaves tread marks, albeit less obvious ones. I explained all this to [redacted] and he gave in and said he'd come take a look at it and get back to us. He didn't. Weeks later I followed up with a call and he said there was dirt in the driveway (there was a small pile of clean fill, near, but not over the area of the problem which I had marked with chalk). He said he'd again come look at it. In the meantime I called the owner, [redacted], and my phone calls to his answering service went un-returned. Finally, [redacted] called back and said [redacted] would go out to look at the driveway. [redacted] called a day later to lecture me on all the previous things I had done "wrong" as noted above. I explained how it didn't make sense, like above, but he was unconvinced. He begrudgingly said he'd come out to fix it but that would be all he'd do. He did and the "repair" was merely a top dressing of asphalt that looks very amateurish, rough and doesn't even cover all the area of tread marks. The driveway doesn't have a new clean look we expected for $4150.Desired Settlement: I'd like the driveway either fixed professionally so that it looks like the new driveway we expected we'd have or a refund of some of the money.

Review: A simple 20 x 50 residential driveway pavement job has turned into a fiasco. The first time it was paved there were huge puddles throughout the driveway. They came back out and paved again. This time putting a blotch of asphalt in the driveway. It's an eyesore and unacceptable. I have been in real estate for nearly thirty years and have never seen anything like it.Desired Settlement: I would like the driveway done correctly.
