We purchased a home in Penticton that had yet to be completed. This gave us the opportunity to pick materials for finishing the basement and is when we first met with the owner of Aladdin. We chose our carpet and underlay for the basement and headed back to our Alberta home 1000 kms away. When we returned we noticed that our brand new landscaped yard (which was covered in snow) had tire tracks all over it. We asked our builder where the tracks had come from and he explained that the carpet installer decided it was okay to drive around back and do an 8 point turn on our brand new yard which was confirmed by our neighbors. At this point we decided that we would be holding back $1,000 from our builder (until we were able to inspect the landscaping and irrigation system) unless he could get a letter from Aladdin that insured that they would pay for repairs (if any) upon this inspection. We were already involved in picking out tile from Aladdin for some changes we wanted made (our cost) and for our builders errors (his cost) we spent hours picking out our tile. During this week long visit we received a phone call from the owner of Aladdin asking if we had made a deal with the builder whereby we would be releasing all holdback funds if a letter was written by Aladdin taking responsibility for the potentially damaged yard and irrigation system, he went on to explain that Aladdin hadn't been paid for the carpet or installation. We let the owner of Aladdin know that the letter and the fact that the bill wasn't paid were issues that should stay between him and our builder and that the release of holdback funds was between us and our builder. This was a very unprofessional conversation as confidential information was discussed. We made it clear that we didn't need the letter, our builder needed the letter as he didn't want to see $1,000 held through till spring. The owner of Aladdin persisted to discuss this letter with us every time we went in to look at or take samples of tile, explaining that he wasn't going to write it because our builder owed him money. We made it clear each time that this was between him and our builder. Before heading home the owner of Aladdin came to our home to measure and prepare estimates for the tile work needed. During our trip home we received an e-mail with the letter regarding the landscaping etc attached. The letter included stipulations that included that the bill for the carpet must be paid in full and there was also a deadline for a yard inspection that would come before our next visit and before the sprinklers could be tested. Once again we didn't care if we had the letter or not as we had the holdback and told Aladdin not to bother as it was too late. The owner of Aladdin proceeded to edit the letter which still included stipulations that couldn't be met and once again it was TOO LATE! Fast forward a month later, we were still waiting for the tile estimates which we had personally put a lot of time into so we decided to call Aladdin. The owner of Aladdin explained that he hadn't even started working on the quotes and when asked if it had something to do with our builder not paying him for the flooring he said "yeah, you could basically say that" we had to clarify that we aren't our builder, we should be treated like any other customer that walks through the door. He finally agreed to get our estimates to us by the next day. We had to call the next day only to find out that they would be another day and he wouldn't do the quotes for the tile repairs that were our builders responsibility even though we had told him from the start that he could invoice us directly for all the tile work. Once again we were dealing with a very unprofessional person. We received the estimate for OUR changes but not for the builders repairs. We could have had our tile installed by now (months later) but we just finished returning to Penticton to shop once again for tile and get an estimate. At this time we were also able to inspect the lawn and irrigation system which turned out to be fine, this whole thing could have been avoided if the owner of Aladdin would have been professional enough to accept responsibility for his installers actions instead of negotiating with the people whose property was potentially damaged by his company. We understand that we can't get back our wasted time and energy that was solely due to the owner of Aladdin acting unprofessionally but we can however share this story and say that we were able to find a company in Penticton that treated us like customers should be treated. They completed quotes in a 2 short days and set up an install date with us just weeks later which will be just before we move in thanks to a delay caused by Aladdin.
