I am in receipt of your letter dated January 26th, regarding a complaint from a patient, [redacted] in regards to the bill he received for services provided at this facilityThank you for allowing this office to provide our account of the eventsAlthough patient confidentiality precludes me from going into any detail outside of the parameters of his complaint, I would like to review the body of the complaint with youMr [redacted] states "I went in for the advertised free CONSULTATION and spoke with a physical therapistHe took my history and listened to my complaints, then brought me in for an EXAMINATIONFollowing the exam, he took me into the PT room and applied ELECTRICAL STIMULATION (which is a physical therapy treatment modality) and explained what a treatment course would look like (for his particular condition)At no point during the exchanged did the PT inform me that we had completed the free consultationIt was my understanding that this was all part of the "sale"I received a courtesy call before being sent to collections, which I paid to spare my credit reportI would like to emphasize that Mr [redacted] had the consultation with a licensed physical therapistThis consultation encounter in and of itself takes at least 10-minutes of the therapist's timeMr [redacted] clearly states that he received an examination, as well as a treatment and further medical adviceI think you would agree that there aren't any practitioners who perform an examination and treatment for freeFurthermore, half of Mr*'s bill was paid without argumentHe received three bills for the remaining portion before being sent a statement of delinquency, during which time at no point did he call to contest the bill or state that he felt it was not a valid bill for services providedThis office stands behind the billing for the services provided to Mr*When a patient comes in bearing the free consultation coupon and informs the front desk that they are in the office for a free consultation, our staff try to verbally emphasize the delineation between the consultation and any further services beyond the verbal encounterWe do not intentionally go out of our way to provide services the patient does not want, and this is the first complaint of this nature that we have receivedIf you review your records of this office, you should not find any complaints regarding this matterIn the future, for purposes of clarification, we are changing the advertising procedure to add an additional disclaimer to the offer for free consultationSincerely, Alan B., MD
